With the rest taking a look at the corpse of the unfortunate dwarf, Ciaran stays in alert watching for any possible attack. Who knows, the beast that did this could still be around, or even if it left could have decided to come back to claim his dwarf back.
- Agreed, Sylvie. It's weird, that the corpse is here and the sled isn't. What use could a sled of iron have for a beast? None, I should think. There's more to this than the attack of a Dale creature...
As he says this, he takes a look at the grooves left by the sled. Where do they lead?
Perception to check for possible dangers: 12.
Survival to check where the grooves lead: 19.
When Solvail speaks, the fighter nods:
- Hruna and the rest will appreciate recovering their friends corpse. It's just a bit of extra weight added to that half a ton, so as long as we recover the sled, it's no problem to carry him back.
Taking a cue from Ciaran, Orixian grasps his axe and starts to watch the surrounding area, letting the others pore over the site. He lets his senses widen and try to take in the any irregular sounds nearby.
Unburdened: The body has been thoroughly mauled and eviscerated. Most of the limbs have been dismembered, the head is missing, and the torso's ribcage has been cracked open and with the organs inside consumed. Judging from the carnage, Silvie's hypothesis that it could be a Yeti definitely seems supported by how brutally this dwarf's body has been torn apart. Footprints are present that belong to multiple small humanoid creatures wearing snowshoes, but they were made more recently than the time of the attack. It's possible the yeti's and dwarves' tracks have been blown away by the wind - while you know the dwarves came from Kelvin's Cairn, there's no telling where that yeti may have come from.
Ciaran and Orixian: The only thing you hear around you is the whispering wind, the only thing you see the snowcapped hills. As far as you can tell, there are no threats present.
Ciaran, Silvie, Calida: You, like Unburdened, spot the small humanoid footprints wearing snowshoes that run through the area. They're fresh, definitely made within the last hour. A set of sled tracks is also apparent, headed in the same direction as the small footprints. Both tracks lead south. It looks like some small humanoids have taken the dwarves' sled - if you set out now, you think you may be able to catch up to them.
Silvie breaths out a sigh of relief. "Well, at least this makes more sense. We've got thieves. The sled was taken by a group of small humanoids not too long ago. I think we should be able to catch them, if we leave now."
"It's been around six hours, so that yeti should be far enough away for us to confront the thieves," Unburdened says as he puts a hand on his crossbow, just in case. "Though to be honest, 'should' is probably doing some heavy lifting."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Alright let's follow the sled tracks since someone with humanoid feet dragged it off. We can give the fallen dwarf a proper burial when we come back" says Calid. She then follows the trail left behind by the sled keeping her eyes peeled for the would-be thieves or the yeti.
Ciaran nods to what's being said and prepares to follow the trail with the rest. He'll keep the glaive at hand, and still try to be alert to their surroundings.
A look of concern grows over Solvail's features, "Thieves?" she clears her throat, "Too much to hope that they don't have anything to do with that?"she eyes the corpse's wounds for a few moments, "Or that they'd just... surrender the goods amicably?" . She thinks on that for just a moment, then gets ready to follow the tracks with the others.
Silvie can't help but smile at Unburdened comment. She then turns towards Solvail, "Probably. If they had good intentions, like returning the iron, I imagine they would have taken him as well," she gestures with her head towards the corpse.
After a short pause in which she watches her companions, Silvie takes her bow in hand and nocks an arrow before moving to the end of the group. She's really worried about an ambush from behind from the yeti.
Orixian follows Calid shield up and ready for anything, thoughts of both a terrifying yeti and mysterious small thieves running through his mind. Maybe this is what my dreams were leading me to?
You all gather yourselves and begin trudging through ice and snow once more, though this time in a southerly direction following the snowshoe and sled tracks of the unknown thieves. Thankfully, you are not ambushed by the prowling yeti that killed Oobok the dwarf - your journey is a largely uneventful one. After about an hour of travel, you are headed out of the hills northeast of Bryn Shander and nearing the Eastway Road when you spot a duo of sleds about 120 feet away.
The creatures you’ve been following appear to be goblins, based on their stature. All six of them groan, grunt, and curse loudly as they haul the bulky dwarven sled toward what appears to be a twenty-foot-tall wagon parked in the snow another 120 feet away. Harnessed to this goblin wagon are two roaring polar bears that don’t look happy.
- We could attack them, though there could be more of them inside. But ... it could be good to know where they are taking that huge sled. Should we let them finish and follow them until they reach their destination. What do you guys think?- Ciaran asks.
"I'll change 'could' to 'definitely'. If there aren't more inside I'll eat one of my arrows," replies Silvie in a low tone while eyeing the goblin wagon. Her next words start slowly, "We could follow them to their destination, but there is the risk we'll lose them. What if a storm comes? Or the wind changes and the bears smell us?" Silvie turns her attention towards the bears, trying to make out if they looked malnourished and maltreated.
(Here we go again)Perception: 20 (That's a lot better)
"Even if those things don't happen," she continues, "their destination probably has even more goblins and we'll be outnumbered. I think we should ambush them now."
As Solvail and the others crest another snowy hill and catch sight of the goblins, the priestes is dumbfounded and stares wide-eyed at each of the others in turn, expecting similar reactions "Follow them!? Are you out of your mind, elf? You expect us to storm a goblin warren and come out the other side with our boots on? In this weather!?" the priestess clears her throat and breathes and waves one hand dismissively "I'm... sorry for the outburst, uh... Ciaran. These dreary surrounfings are just getting into me. What I mean is, like our friend here mentioned, goblins will only be courageous so long as they have the numeric advantage. Let us try to drive them away from the wagon here and hope whatever rusty chains hold those bears keep them from joining the fray."
- A "no" was more than enough, human - Ciaran answers the cleric, who had also felt the need of pointing out his race for some reason - Ok, let's take them now. I won't be able to be stealthy, so I'll better stay put and give the rest space so you can get to them unnoticed.
He prepares his glaive, but keeps still and will try to be the last to move to avoid attracting attention.
Orixian widens his arms in a calming gesture. "Hey, we're doing something tough, and we are all very crabby about the cold. There's no need for us to fight amongst ourselves when our target is in sight. Approaching to get more information is a good idea. But outright killing all of them means we're left with no information. Could we take some alive and question them? Maybe find out their motivations and where they were hauling the sled?"
Silvie looks between Solvail and Ciaran for a short moment, head tilted. "Not the time for... this,"she makes a vague gesture with her hand between them. Then she turns to Solvail, "Also, not friend. Ally that won't let any of you die to the best of my ability, sure. But we're not friends."
Immediately after that Silvie follows Calid's lead and moves forward, trying to move to the side of the wagon and in a hidden enough spot to shoot.
Stealth: 25 (I have no idea if it makes any difference here, but it was a nat 20)
Solvail opens her arms and bows slightly in a show of 'surrender', nodding at Silvie and pragmatically stating "Exactly. Friendly enough." then she turns to the goblins in the distance, adding "A show of force should be enough to drive them away. A well-placed spell or two. I'll follow your lead." then the falls behind and gets ready to move ahead with the group.
