"All good questions", Persephone says. "Complicated by needing to save spells in case we need to..." She looks around & whispers to avoid prying ears, "...fight paladins in the day after shadowbeasts at night. Detect Magic, Identify and research spells will have to wait. And the town lorekeepers are either out of town or locked up."
"Yes," Viga nods. "It's hard to wear a ring in our line of work so we have these," the half-orc motions to the amulet. "Kurru is the tree you see and I...I was a paladin of the Dawn Father," she says but it seems a bit more of a confession than anything.
"Nothing like the others," Dulana interjects. "These people are....zealots, " the dwarven woman exclaims as she begins to tidy up the tea things used by Salamar and Persephone. "Viga came to us a traveller and a faithful follower of the Dawn Father as she is now but I would not lump her in with these...people. She's allowed nothing but deference to our teachings and honors our faith as she does her own," her mother-in-law defends her even if it was unnecessary to do so as Dulana finishes clearing things away.
"I...I should have mentioned it before but in writing my old monastic order in Sul Na Mara they....they weren't sure where Reeves and her companions hail from. The Heralds of the Dawn seem to be their own sect with the Dawn Father's light, " she adds.
Outside...
Salamir and Persephone move through Carrowkeel easily. Passed the temple they notice a gaurd woth attention to the braizers. But again there isn't a single denizen in the street. As the two move back towards the entrance of the village there they find a livery. The two can't immediately see Ed or their horses but there are horses being tended to by paladins. There's also a gnomish man with the wounded hand from the sermon who looks startled seeing you both. The paladins of Heralds of the Dawn tending horses do not stop their work but take a pointed interest in you both as you approach the gnomish man. He looks decidedly nervous amd focuses on repairing a woven basket that looks like it's been stomped on!
“I am concerned by these paladins as well. Let’s hope it doesn’t come to blows”, Salamir responds to Persephone in low tones as they approach the livery.
He makes a point of not taking much interest in the paladins there and focuses on the gnome.
“Hey there”, he greets the gnome congenially. “I don’t suppose you have seen our tabaxi companion?”.
Absorbing all the information he can, Rammand speaks out, “Viga, is it possible this new group could have brought the creatures? Shadows come from the absence of light. And if I’m looking to bring the Dawnfather in a… militant manor, there are likely no better creatures to strike fear into a community and as followers of the Dawnfather, they are likely particularly suited to defeat these creatures.”
Barely pausing to take a breath, he adds, ”Do either of you think any of these people can be spoken sense to? If we can stop the creatures, it’s unlikely that they will pack up and leave or relax their current stance. In fact, it’s likely they will dig their heels in deeper and become more authoritarian. They might even get some traction with the locals if they are in fear of other attacks.”
Pokerfaced, Persephone looks around, not allowing her gaze to linger long enough to be a challenge she notes how many paladins & whether Warden Reaves is among them. When in position she looks to see if Ed or the horses are visible in the stables.
As soon as she's finished drawing out the amulet, Constance runs her gloved fingers over its illustration, lost briefly in quiet contemplation before snapping to. She adjusts her glasses then sets to work helping Dulana clean up, the gears of her mind turning with rapid speed. She adds "Liberation" to her internal list of to-do's as Rammand speaks of the zealots and the possibility that they orchestrated this mess.
Salamir inclines his head to the gnome, and then makes to walk into the livery to look further for Ed and their horses. If he still can't see sign of them, he will approach the paladins.
"Greetings. We were expecting to find our horses and our tabaxi companion here. Did you happen to see where they went?".
Salamir notices everyone's horses are stabled as his missing companion explained but Eyes in the Dark is no where to be seen.
"Only tabaxi we've seen in this town own the bakery," a human female paladin replies. "Right Geoff," she says to the half-elven paladin brushing out a horse tied up.
"Tabaxi? Oh, yeah Summer Wind and her family," the half-elven man replies looking up at Salamir then at the human female. "She owns the bakery, " he confirms.

They might even get some traction with the locals if they are in fear of other attacks.”
"Another possible theory," Constance notes, her lips twisting to one side as she gathers up the other empty tea cups. "And it would do well to have a contingency plan in place should that be the case. But even the most stubborn of weeds can be uprooted with the right method."
"Or herbicide," Alphinius adds, and the mischief in his voice glints in Constance's eyes.

(OOC: Does it look like the paladins are getting ready to go somewhere? (bit & bridle in place, saddle & saddleblanket nearby, etc)
Or does it look like they're just caring for their horses? (Brushing, feeding, watering etc))
Persephone keeps her pokerface, trying not to show emotion in front of the paladins, and tries insight to see if they're telling the truth about seeing Ed.
The paladins are caring for the horses. Persephone can't seem to read the poker faces of either Herald. They seem distracted by their work.
Salamir and Persephone move through the streets towards a storefront with light inside. It has a wooden sign hanging outside with a steaming loaf of bread that reads: Ryes and Shine. The shop's sign says open but there's no one around as they go inside. There's a tinkling of a bell hung on the door as they enter. The shop smells amazing and the case looks well picked over but there are still plenty of freshly baked goods left for sale. The bell ringing calls the attention of a tabaxi woman who emerges wearing a flour covered apron and a solemn expression.
"Can I help you," the woman asks brushing off flour from her stormy gray colored fur. "Oh," she says realizing that it's the party.

"I hope so", Persephone smiles. ""We're looking for a lost tabaxi named "Eyes in the Dark". Black fur, this high (holds out hand. The paladins steered us this way. We were hoping you'd seen which way he went."
"We are in town on the request of the Gunnulf twins, trying to help with the issue of the missing people. Perhaps you might also have information that would help us piece together what is going on here?", Salamir adds. "We weren't expecting a town so much under the influence of a group of paladins".
The gray furred tabaxi woman looks anxiously at a wall then looks at Persephone suspiciously. Persephone obviously a holy person too the woman do not respond however when Salamir appears she seems slightly more relaxed.
"It's a cult," the tabaxi woman exclaims, you can assume is Summer Wind, before in a lowered tone of voice she adds, "they took him," she adds leaning into the party members. "But please...I don't want any trouble here," she adds gesturing at the exit. "You can't fight them there's too many and...and they've taken our elders and most of...of our children, " she adds frowning.
"Mama," the party here's a soft voice call from the back.
"Please...you must go," the woman pleads quickly packing a basket of random baked goods and thrusting it towards the party. "Autumn Rain was too sick to be taken," she adds quickly. "They only took the children they....they could use," she adds bitterness in her tone as she explains.
"Be assured, the last thing we want is to put you or your child in danger. From everything we have seen so far, cult sounds about right", Salamir says as he takes the basket.
He motions to Persephone that they should go, but turns back to Summer Wind, "Where did they take Eyes in the Dark? And what are they using the children for?".
He waits a moment to see if she will decide to answer, and if not he doesn't push it further.
"I just saw them grab him outside the livery. I don't know where they took him. As for the children..." Summer Wind pauses, "they're being instructed in the ways of the Heralds of the Dawn. They gave us no option and those of us who could afford to abandon their homes and businesses did taking their children with them. My daughter is sick and many of the local people are just farmers and shepherds. Who are they to fight? Please..." she pleads again. "Take the basket and go! If they ask you only bought these from me. I told you nothing," she adds gesturing again at the exit/entrance door.

The gnomish man doesn't say anything to Salamir about Ed, he instead just glances towards the paladins before speaking.
"No, I...haven't seen anyone since after the sermon travelers," the gnomish man replies to Salamir vigorously fixing the basket.
