Constance you sense woth your spell Eyes in the Dark is just beyond a door in a connected area to High Warden Reeves' small chamber that seems to be a place of study. Your information about the Dawn Father is the highlights taught to most outside of the faith. Pelor, the Dawnfather is the god of the sun, summer, and agriculture, and is generally worshiped by farmers and people who live off the land. He is one of the prime creator gods. It seems odd to Constance that these Heralds however seem to represent nothing you've learned about the Dawn Father's followers further confirmed by Viga's own omissions to being a former paladin of the faith and their lasting connections within the church being unaware of the Heralds of the Dawn.
Salamir can see Constance distracted and looking to a door just on the other side of a bookshelf. The bookshelves are full of leather tomes and religious reliquary. In particular a scattered in several shards but only the bejeweled hilt is complete. Persephone then notices both Salamir and Constance's interest in the adjoining door nearest to High Warden Reeves desk. She can't really hear any signs of trouble and neither does Salamir or Constance.
"Enough," High Warden Reeves begins still a calm. "I was concerned that your excuse for coming to the village were not genuine. Your tabaxi companion I detained for questioning as after the sermon your party decided to linger. These people, " she looks at Viga then back at Rammand to continue to speak, "they brought this on themselves, " she adds next. "The portal was summoned within the tree. We attempted to close it by destroying the portal itself. We were successful at destroying it or so we thought but then their elders realized that this being an ancient forest there are yet still more trees were portals can be summoned from," she adds. "They will not tell us who amongst them is summoning the portals, " she finishes. "Am I wrong," she then says looking at Viga.
"Only that we summoned the portals, " Viga says curtly emphasizing "we" as she replies her tone growing in frustration. "These portals..****y began showing up when you lot began building this temple with the ruins of the mages tower," the half-orc motions to the stone around them. "We told you that you and your...flock were unwanted here yet you remained. You built your temple and brought this on us all," she adds.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Well", Persephone adds. "Now you have a wizard and a cleric of anilother faith to shed light in darkness. We've already killed one of the shadow beasts. Let's find out what's REALLY behind this and stop it. Constance, do you have what you need to locate the missing villagers like the Gunnolf's father & Viga's wife?"
(Has Persephone seen anyone heal (in any way) the dwarf she attacked? Perception w disad 13
OOC my previous post's corrections didn't post. I rewrote them.
The dwarf is not in the room. From what she remembers however refused her healing and now out of her sight. Persephone has no idea if he's being or has been healed.
"As you've been told before we have no need of your assistance, but I will allow you to leave. Well, that is after you've faced punishment. As you've already done violence to my Heralds we have that to think on," High Warden Reeves stands from her chair and calls out to the hallway behind the party. "Shall we go back into the temple itself? The trial will begin as soon as possible, " she explains next moving around the desk. "We will not shackle you but if you attempt any more violence in this house of worship may the Our Father ease your passing into your final Dawn," she adds her tone finally allowing an inkling of the turmoil bubbling beneath her seemingly cool exterior. "Shall we," she adds gesturing to the opening door with a now gaunlet barring hand. From behind Viga who turns to face two very large armored bulwark style fighters in golden masks and armoe. The High Warden gestures towards the exit. "Please, " High Warden Reeves adds as Viga looks around at the party before stepping out into the corridor that will then lead into the temple proper. "Bring the other one," she calls out and the door that was closed within the chamber opens and Ed emerges relatively unscathed but not completely unarmed.
The tabaxi looks around wild-eyed at the party as if they have been interrogated by other means than pure physical force!
At sight of Ed, the wizard's temper reaches a quiet boiling point.
"Forgive me, Warden," Constance says congenially, removing her glasses to wipe with a cloth as she walks forward. She stops just in front of Reeves as they're returned to the bridge of her nose then continues, her words lilted with what sounds like genuine curiosity. "But who deigned you to be the judge, jury, and executioner of this town? Were you elected by Carrowkeel? Appointed by the Courts as Magistrate or a Representative of the Lawbearer? I'm very curious who you are, in fact. You, the leader of an unsanctioned sect operating outside the Chantry of Dawn's authority." Exhausted as she is, her posture is straight, buttressed by a sense of justice that matches the Warden's own misguided one.
"You've declared martial law, have detained citizens against their will, have made false accusations, and have all but seized this village by pressing your boot heel upon its neck. Goodness me, that doesn't sound like anything the Dawnfather would condone, does it? Is one of his tenements not 'Deliver the light of the Dawnfather where darkness dwells, and do so with kindness, compassion, and mercy?' I wonder what Pelor would make of your treatment of others." She gestures to Ed with a sweeping hand. "I hope you don't mind a bit of friendly advice from the daughter of a Lord Justice of the Lawbearer, 'High Warden' Reeves. I would tread lightly, lest a higher power be brought down upon your heads. The Dawnfather's or otherwise."
"Now," she smiles politely, "our company was hired to do a job. You may not need our assistance, but we were legally contracted to provide it to our clients. You advised us to leave, and we are under no obligation to follow such advice. We are here to fulfill our contract, with or without your cooperation. If you would like our party to sit a trial, it must go through the proper channels with an appointed judge or lawmaker. Otherwise, you may enact an amercement which will we gladly pay to satisfy a financial penalty for damages incurred." Her heeled boots take root to the floor, making no move to leave the room.
"Constance, I've seen nothing so far to suggest they actually are paladins of the dawn father instead of brigands in exceptionally shiny armor. And what a coincidence. There actually is a sect of devotees said to follow the Queen of Air and Darkness, who want to bring the shadowfell to this world. What better disguise could they take?"
Salamir listens to High Warden Reeves have her say, and then Constance and Persephone. He just watches High Warden Reeves with a creased brow, trying to work her out. When Ed is returned he breaks his silence to speak to the High Warden.
"My companions have reasonable concerns. I too have never known those in service to the Dawn Father to lie so blatantly (and badly might I say), and seemingly torture folk. The fact is neither we nor the elders of Carrowkeel acknowledge your authority here", he says doing his best to remain calm as he motions to Ed regarding the torture.
"High Warden Reeves, we have been honest with you about our purpose in town and our motives. We may not have been armed with all the facts, but we were honest. You met us with lies that were obvious enough for us to be suspicious of you, so yes we stayed to uncover the truth. This can now go one of two ways. You persist in a show trial designed to humiliate us and drive us out of town. Or you can set aside your pride and accept that whatever has happened here has gone beyond your control, and you could use some help resolving it", he adds diplomatically.
For now, he stands his ground and does not move out the room, but makes no aggressive move nor use an aggressive tone.
OOC Salamir I grant you advantage on persuasion and Constance a straight intimidation roll canceling your disadvantage.
High Warden Reeves stands surprisingly still and quite staring between Salamir and Constance. The bulwark fighters creak ominously in their pageant style armor. Ed seemingly pants, their sharp eyes darting around as if the creature inside is desperate for escape. Viga shifts from one foot to the other in front of the wall of golden armor.

Persephone moves to the outer door, from this room (hall) to the main church, maintaining the pokerface she's held.
If she has to pass the "Golden boys", she quotes the line from a popular play, the line that allows you to pass golems unaccosted. "Klaatu Nicto Barada".
She holds the door open.
"Let's go warden. I can't wait to testify that Not One of your so-called "paladins" have the God granted gifts borne by the lowest of Real paladins."
awaiting some kind of response that does not come. When Persephone mentions being targeted by a spell, he raises an eyebrow at the High Warden.
"I have tried to be cordial, High Warden. But you and yours persist in throwing my good nature back in my face, with your deceit and harassment of my companions and I. Be warned my patience has run out", he says in an icily cold tone.
Constance, likewise says nothing, having said a great deal already. She simply gazes up at the Warden with her large brown eyes--made ever larger by the convex lenses of her glasses--and smiles in an excessively pleasant way, to the extent that it's unnerving.
She hears Persephone, but doesn't yet respond, both again waiting for the Warden's response and worried the casting of magic would invite an attack while she's this close to their leader. As harmless as the spell is, it would be easy enough for them to claim they did not know that and acted in self-defense.
((Since both Salamir and Constance were watching her this whole time, did they see anything that indicated the Warden cast magic? Probably not, but figured it was better to double check!))
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Persephone keeps an eye out. Are the pseudopaladins the only other ones in the room? Does it look like anyone else had the "moment of disruption" she and Viga had from the spell? Or the glazed look she saw in the paladins in the street? It's difficult since "Charm Person" is an Arcane spell, unfamiliar to Persephone.
Rammand pulls a tuning fork from one of his pockets. “Warden, I will be making sure no magic shenanigans are taking place. I am making you aware as a sign of good faith and because this in non-negotiable.”
