Aurora grabs a notebook and a pencil from her satchel, preparing to take note of everything. "So Farmer Gourd, can you tell us what has happened to you? And don't leave behind any detail please"
"There's the problem. I don't remember. All I know is there was an air... I smelt Owlbear. I know that stench anywhere!" He growled. "Then something hit me 'n the boy on the heads and knocked us out. Next thing we know we're being woken up by Mirth, the town bard, and the pumpkins are gone!"
Hamitch, the son, doesn't seem to look up much. "Yeah. That's how it went."

Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
May each word that I speak be backed by each of my teeth.

Farmer Gourd seems to be telling the truth, and you get the idea that if Mirth woke the farmer and Hamitch up, they might have an idea where the pumpkins are, or what might have attacked them - Mirth has definitely seen more of the world than anyone else.
Hamitch is ashamed they couldn't stop their father from getting hurt.
"It's alright of you don't remember much. You hit your head after all." She says with a reassuring smile on her face. Then she turns towards Granny and the rest of the group. "Maybe we can try asking some questions to Mirth, what do you think?"
While Farmer Gourd and Hamitch were talking, Mira will look them over visually to make sure their injuries are not severe. Replying to Aurora, "Yes, let us find Mirth and question him."
While Farmer Gourd and Hamitch were talking, Mira will look them over visually to make sure their injuries are not severe. Replying to Aurora, "Yes, let us find Mitch and question him."
Mira gets the idea that the injuries will heal in a few sleeps time, but some healing wouldn't go amiss. They also notice that whatever they were hit with left a sort of large, round bruise pattern on the skin - they were hit by something like a pan or a barrel lid.
You all begin to look for Mirth, the village bard. It's not hard - even from where you are, you can hear the melodies of a flute floating on the air. You quickly follow the noise down the street, and around a corner into the town square, seeing Mirth sitting on a park bench and playing their long, silver flute. They're clearly a tiefling, with red skin, golden eyes, and a rather dapper sense of bardic fashion consisting of cream-colored pantaloons, a white shirt and purple-dyed leather vest, and a matching purple beret positioned behind their small front horns. They don't look much out of their teens.
Mirth's tail waves at you as you walk up to them, but otherwise the tiefling doesn't acknowledge you, continuing to play thoughtfully. Granny, in the background, has started to pick her teeth with one of her long fingernails - you can clearly tell she's enjoying watching you lot solve a mystery.
Mira approaches Mirth and stops a few feet away, fascinated by their playing of the flute. She will wait until either Mirth stops playing or someone else greets them.
Aurora quickly approaches them, still holding her notebook. "Good morning, Mirth! Well, I guess it isn't a very good morning actually with everything going on today... Speaking of which, is it you that found Farmer Gourd and Hamitch after they were attacked, right?"
Aurora quickly approaches him, still holding her notebook. "Good morning, Mirth! Well, I guess it isn't a very good morning actually with everything going on today... Speaking of which, is it you that found Farmer Gourd and Hamitch after they were attacked, right?"
Mirth continues to trill away on the flute, but the melody seems to become a bit faster. Their tail points up into the air, curling in a way that almost looks like a thumbs-up.
"Can we ask you some questions about what happened? Is that alright with you?" She asks them, looking at them with eyes filled with hope.
The tail forms the thumbs up again, then rolls. You hear a calm, genderless voice in your head, very soft. "Ask away." You get the sense that the voice belongs to Mirth, because you haven't actually heart them speak before. You're not sure though, because Mirth is still playing the flute.
She startles a bit, surprised by hearing a voice in her head. "Wait, was that you? That's a very nice trick, how did you do that?" She asks them, then continues "Oh but that's beyond the point. So, when and where did you find Farmer Gourd and Hamitch?" As she asking that, she opens her notebook and prepares to take notes.

So, when and where did you find Farmer Gourd and Hamitch?" As she asking that, she opens her notebook and prepares to take notes.
The music goes a bit darker, and a bit slower. "Just a dash of magical music. I found Farmer Gourd and his son on the main road to the East, just outside the village." The music tempo speeds up a little, with a few more discordant notes added in - "They'd been hit over the head by something, though I'm not sure what. I didn't see any sign of the pumpkins though, they might have been gone for an hour or more by time I found the farmer." The music suddenly completely changes tune, becoming an erratic, high-pitched mess of nptes. "Old Man Capaldi might know more - I saw him skulking around the alleyways to the East when I found the farmer."
You know that Old Man Pete Capaldi is the village wizard, but he also doubles as the village idiot. He has dinnerplate-wide eyes, insists on always wearing a pair of tatty pants with suspenders and a torn-up old tunic, steals food from the local bakery regularly, and talks in screechy riddles. He always seems to have seen everything, but understood not a bit of it - he's usually the best gossip-keeper in the village, other than Sally the baker, who is far more of a talker than Mr. Capaldi.
"Mr. Capaldi was there as well then... That's good to know. Hopefully he has seen something useful." She mumbles to herself. Then her gaze turns once again towards Mirth "I have another question for you. Farmer Gourd spoke of a owlbear, did you see any sign of that? Or did you smell anything weird maybe?"

Mirth's tune slows, as if they're unsure. "There... was an odor. It was very strong. Not sure if it's owlbear, though. I also saw footprints in the dirt that didn't look like they belonged to Farmer Gourd, they were too big."
