The once large and profitable town of Withermore has fallen into turmoil due to mysterious disappearances over the past year. Some say it’s a serial killer, some say it’s a strange beast, others simply say the town is cursed. Only one thing is certain, nearly every person who has disappeared is of fey heritage.
The town has lost nearly half of its original population, some vanished, others left in fear of vanishing. With the capital ignoring the town’s request for aid, the town mayor has sent out a message offering a grand reward to anyone who can stop the disappearances. Many bounty hunters and adventurers alike have flocked to this town in hopes to solve this mystery, and many of them never left….
Maybe you lost someone dear to you, or you need some coin in your pocket, or perhaps you are simply looking for a thrill. Whatever your reason, you have arrived in this sorry town ready to partake in the investigation.

So, I hesitate to call it that especially here on the forums. That said, I will be treating this like a mini campaign or a Two-shot type deal.
This game is meant to be creepy, but full disclosure I’ve never written horror before. SO! We’ll see where this goes.

I will be choosing 4-5 players.
Rules: Everything is allowed ACCEPT Homebrew, spell jammer, and flying races. (Yes I am allowing critical roll content.)
Characters will be level 5, Roll stats re-roll ones once. If you don’t like what you get go point buy.

Game will be VERY RP heavy there will be combat, but not a ton keep that in mind when creating characters.
Posting may be a bit slow. I’d like everyone to be able to post once a day, but I understand if that isn’t always possible. So, if you are going to miss more than one day, then let me know beforehand. I’ll hold the story if necessary (and you aren’t going to be gone for too long) I will give the same courtesy to my players should I need a few days for IRL stuff.

Race: Kenku (don't worry, I do not plan to draw pictures or speak weirdly. The new kenku rules got rid of the mimic requirement.. although I do plan to use the trait to my advantage)
Class: Inquisitive rogue
Backstory: Omen spend most of his early life as a petty thief before turning his life around. After getting caught during a jewel heist in Baldur's Gate, he turned informant and cut a deal with the guards. Omen always had his eyes open, always watching his fellow thieves. When his old gang left him behind to get caught while they escaped with the loot, he had no problem helping the city watch track down every lost precious stone... and many other stolen goods. During this time he earned an impressive reputation with the guards and began a new life as a private investigator and bounty hunter. Recently news of strange disappearances had spread to his ears.. and the promise of coin peaked his interest. Now Omen had a new case to solve... and he wasted no time making his way to the town of Withermore.
Greatest fear: Ending up back in jail.
Darkest Desire: Gold and riches often tempt Omen. The thrill of stealing and the temptation to pocket the loot of those he captures is always in the back of his mind.

This is a PC that I applied to a different campaign with, but didn't get selected. I rolled insanely well, as you can see, and would be willing to try & get the other DM to verify if you like.
Backstory: Khorvane hails from an isolated religious community that dwells in a nearby marsh land area. Whenever young people reach adulthood in this community, they are given the opportunity to wander the wider world for a period of three years, to help them freely decide whether they want to remain a part of that community, or become a citizen of the outside world. If they choose the outside world, they are free to return for visits to family & loved ones, but must agree never to live in the community full time. Khorvane left behind his family (mother, father, 2 younger sisters) and friends to wander, and is approaching the end of his three year sabbatical. And he still hasn't decided whether to return home for good or not.
Greatest fear: That he won't be accepted back home, even if he chooses to return.
Darkest Desire: To supplant the gods and remove all suffering from the world.

She would learn to be a proper lady, marry well, and produce heirs to unite the Ivory Tower and the Duchy of Karakos in peace and prosperity.
Unfortunately, Kitiara had other plans. It started with the dresses that she refused to wear. Then it was wheedling her way into her twin brother's riding and fencing lessons. When she chopped off her hair and insisted on being called Kit, things finally came to a head.
It was deemed safer to marry Kitiara off before she could become a further embarrassment. The night before her wedding, Kit packed a bag and disappeared into the night, never to be seen again.
Kit teamed up with a group of adventurers in Berdusk and met the love of her life, a Cleric of Ilmater named Eila Forthall. They traveled together for nearly a year before they were ambushed and their companions slaughtered by a mad druid in the mines of a small mountain town. Broken by the experience, they journeyed to Baldur's Gate, where Eila became a healer in the Temple of Ilmater and Kit earned a living as a street performer.
But the call to adventure lives on...
Greatest Fear: Kit's greatest fear is losing Eila, a fear that she knows will inevitably come to pass (human lives are so tragically short), closely followed by the fear of having to return home and live the life of quiet desperation her parents had planned for her. She also has a visceral fear of wolves and centipedes, stemming from the traumas of her past adventures.
Darkest Desire: Although she's learned to respect and admire the quiet heroism of self sacrifice, Kit still secretly dreams of living a life of adventure as a wandering knight, righting wrongs and living a life worth remembering.

Having recently escaped his captor, he has made his way home to Withermore only to discover that his family is among the missing. Wondering if his own abduction is somehow related to the recent disappearances, Charles joins in the efforts to solve the mystery with nothing more than his wits and his trusty sling.

Darkest Desire: desires to build a loyal army using mind control that he learned from the fey
Backstory: Having left his family for fame and fortune, his parents were very upset and only recently had started communicating with him via letters. But, the letters and abruptly stopped coming. The more recently letters had described something dark going on in and around town that maybe his family very afraid. So, he has made the journey home to find out what has happened to them and to the his town.

Backstory: Rowarin never believed he'd get into trouble. But never-the-less, it happened. Being the friendly person he is, and naïve, he followed a group of friends into a seedy tavern in his hometown of Withermore. Not being of age meant he was not allowed to purchase ale, but this didn't stop them. They managed to persuade the barkeep a few drinks, which was all in good jest and fun at the time. But some of his friends became loud and raucous, causing a bit of a scene. This captured the eyes of the local militia who also happened to be resting at this tavern.
Rowarin noticing this, quickly devised a plan. He was good at that, at least. He used his strong connection to the magical weave and summoned a magical wave of energy that proceeded to distract the men, allowing ample time for Rowarin's friends to vacate. What Rowarin was not expecting was there to be a BattleMage present. He sensed the use of this magic and quickly deduced it's source. The militia men grabbed hold of Rowarin, and had decided that the stocks should do him good. The Mage however saw the talent, saw the keen intellect of young Rowarin. He said there is an alternative solution - enlist. With no choice, he was forced to sign up.
That was 3 years ago. His mandatory service is over, and with that Rowarin made the decision to leave. He didn't like being confined by rules and regulations, but wants to be free and travel and explore what knowledge the world has to offer. With his small knapsack packed, he headed back for home. Perhaps his old friends would still be there.
Greatest fear: Fear of his talent being lost. Being unable to touch the properties of the weave and create magical machinations or not be able to cast his magics when required. Fear of imprisonment. The idea of being trapped in one place for too long makes his skin writhe.
Darkest Desire: Power. Always being one who enjoys learning, strives for excellence in his abilities. He knows there ARE limits to what he should do, but there is always that inclination in his mind that if it is there, it is wanting to be discovered. Understood. Mastered.

Race: Sea Elf

Backstory: Mina grew up with her parents and brother along the Sea of Stars, doing very well in the fishing trade. Her favorite pasttime was to get the big sea monsters, not just the typical fish people were expecting. Her brother and she also had friendly competitions in this as well. It was a good life.. one that she didn't plan on leaving.
Till the fateful day where she and her best friend, Lyla, were in the Sea and something got ahold of Lyla and stole her away. Mina chased and chased, but gave up at some point and she never saw Lyla again. She has nightmares about it, she thinks if only she tried a little harder...
She never got over it and eventually left her home. In the midst of her wanderings she has met many others (other applicants most likely ;) ) and heard about Withermore. She decided to try and help and hopes that will help keep the nightmares at bay.
Greatest fear: Someone finding out she let her friend go...

Backstory: Josef left his home and his betrothed behind when his town was conquered by the neighboring kingdom. Josef was training to be part of the city guard. When the attackers came, he acquitted himself well and killed two opposing soldiers. Unfortunately, this made him a marked man. His betrothed managed to help him escape, but she decided to stay; while Josef's goal is to gain strength and allies to vanquish the oppressors, his betrothed's goal is to use her healing powers to rebuild the town from within. Josef lived in the wild for a time, but now realizes to accomplish his goals he needs to find allies, to integrate into society. So now he uses his ranger skills as a hired mercenary, joining this group and that on various missions, all the while looking for a group he can trust and grow with, and eventually return.
Greatest fear: That he will return home to find all his dreams are forever lost, his family gone, betrothed dead or imprisoned, the town razed.
Darkest Desire: Sometimes he dreams of giving up his goals, and just going back and stealing his betrothed away to a far away land despite her wishes, to give up any hope of revenge or restoration.

The militia men grabbed hold of Rowarin, and had decided that the stocks should do him good. The Mage however saw the talent, saw the keen intellect of young Rowarin. He said there is an alternative solution - enlist. With no choice, he was forced to sign up.
That was 3 years ago. His mandatory service is over, and with that Rowarin made the decision to leave. He didn't like being confined by rules and regulations, but wants to be free and travel and explore what knowledge the world has to offer. With his small knapsack packed, he headed back for home. Perhaps his old friends would still be there.
Greatest fear: Fear of his talent being lost. Being unable to touch the properties of the weave and create magical machinations or not be able to cast his magics when required.
Fear of imprisonment. The idea of being trapped in one place for too long makes his skin writhe.
Darkest Desire: Power. Always being one who enjoys learning, strives for excellence in his abilities. He knows there ARE limits to what he should do, but there is always that inclination in his mind that if it is there, it is wanting to be discovered. Understood. Mastered.

Name: Mina Holminion
Race: Sea Elf
Class: Ranger
Backstory: Mina grew up with her parents and brother along the Sea of Stars, doing very well in the fishing trade. Her favorite pasttime was to get the big sea monsters, not just the typical fish people were expecting. Her brother and she also had friendly competitions in this as well. It was a good life.. one that she didn't plan on leaving.
Till the fateful day where she and her best friend, Lyla, were in the Sea and something got ahold of Lyla and stole her away. Mina chased and chased, but gave up at some point and she never saw Lyla again. She has nightmares about it, she thinks if only she tried a little harder...
She never got over it and eventually left her home. In the midst of her wanderings she has met many others (other applicants most likely ;) ) and heard about Withermore. She decided to try and help and hopes that will help keep the nightmares at bay.
Greatest fear: Someone finding out she let her friend go...
Darkest Desire: A way to go back to the Sea of Stars without regret, remorse. Something she thinks is impossible.

Name: Josef Gurion
Race: Human. (need to get all those odd abilities to even)
Class: Fighter 1 / Ranger 4. (planning after Ranger 5 to take Fighter levels)
Backstory: Josef left his home and his betrothed behind when his town was conquered by the neighboring kingdom. Josef was training to be part of the city guard. When the attackers came, he acquitted himself well and killed two opposing soldiers. Unfortunately, this made him a marked man. His betrothed managed to help him escape, but she decided to stay; while Josef's goal is to gain strength and allies to vanquish the oppressors, his betrothed's goal is to use her healing powers to rebuild the town from within. Josef lived in the wild for a time, but now realizes to accomplish his goals he needs to find allies, to integrate into society. So now he uses his ranger skills as a hired mercenary, joining this group and that on various missions, all the while looking for a group he can trust and grow with, and eventually return.
Greatest fear: That he will return home to find all his dreams are forever lost, his family gone, betrothed dead or imprisoned, the town razed.
Darkest Desire: Sometimes he dreams of giving up his goals, and just going back and stealing his betrothed away to a far away land despite her wishes, to give up any hope of revenge or restoration.
