Moonlight and shadow settles over the clearing, and with it, an unusual calm. Mimzy, still on watch duty and probably sorely missing the embrace of her hammock by now, hears the howling, growling and buzzing of the swamp sweep by in swells like dust devils across an open plain, though never too near as to set the fairy on edge. The dangerous prospect of dropping her guard - just for a moment, to indulge in comfort and allow each vulnerability it would entail - ever coaxes her eyelids to close. Mimzy, please roll a d100.
It is nearing the end of your shift. Flittering over to wake your mountain-born friend, in your periphery, you catch a faint rustle in the foliage created by plant growth...
Mimzy swiftly flits directly to the the tent to awaken Kaelroc, "come on... wakey, wakey... you great giant brutish lug, it's your turn on watch duty... hurry, there seems to be something or someone rustling in the foliage near the camp! Whatever it is... it probably needs stomped and you've got just the feet ready made for the task!!!"She says excitedly...
Kaelroc's lids open revealing his grey eyes. His mind clear he speaks quietly - I am awake little fire. he reaches to the tops of his shoulder's tightening his armor, securing his shield and whip to his body. He slides out of the tent. Looking directly at where Mimzy heard the noise. He cast a quick look to Mimzy and says - If it is hostile, awaken the others. He takes a moment to observe any movement or noise - making no attempt to be subtle - he strides directly at the noise.
Mimzy just gave the Goliath a Goblin stick-eye in response to his words but said nothing and flitted off to fetch Mugwort figuring (assuming) that Mender in the tent had overheard their exchange.
Mender would awaken on top of his backpack, curled up in a tight ball. "What...What's going on?" He would grumble in a daze as he slowly staggers to his feet with his rod drawn.
Mugwort woke up in a cold sweat, his heart pounding. Something had woken him up, but what? A soft, dim light from the campfire still bathed the area, creating subtle shadows. His ears twitched forward and back; trying to hear what may have triggered this jolting awakening. His eyes were slowly adapting to the dim light and shifting shadows as something brushed his cheek, making him jerk back and turn automatically. Without thought, Mugwort's arm swung up to shoo away the swamp pest which was bothering him.
A tiniest of 'thumps' and a sudden shrill string of curse words greeted him as a small figure came into focus inches from his face. "Wake up you big lump! Something is creeping around the camp." Mimzy was not a happy camper.
Mugwort popped up into a sitting position and shook his head in a futile attempt to clear the cobwebs. Wiping his face with the back of his arm, he looked about while still a bit dazed. "Something? Moving about... what is it?" he asked, still half asleep and half 'almost' awake. He fumbled once or twice before getting his mask secured in place. His head was still spinning; his thoughts the loudest thing in the silent night.
Adrenaline was still pumping through Mugwort's veins from his latest nightmare, it took another moment for his head to finally start to clear. 'Swamp... danger... camp... stone slab... soul stealer...,' his thoughts jumbled and chaotic. "Mimzy... what ..."
With a perception of 23, you manage to shrug off your drowsiness and whet your eyes and ears. A nearby bush rustles. Approaching it, you become aware of faint gurgling noise - as though someone or something is choking on a mouthful of water. Parting the branches, you behold a most unsettling sight...
It is a wolf cub, curled up into a fetal position. As it draws long, rasping breaths, its frail body shivers and convulses abnormally - as though each causes the creature immense pain. It is emaciated, deformed, vulnerable, with bones which protrude from its arched back and a thin layer of mucus slicking its fur. It growls at you weakly, spattering little droplets of blood in your direction. You, and any others you wish to summon over, may make a medicine check to determine the nature of this vile affliction.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Mugwort leaves his resting place and makes it to the campfire just as Kaelroc slides into the nearby heavy growth. Moving forward, Mugwort tries to be as quiet as possible ( stealth: 14 in combat log ) to follow in Kaelroc's tracks. Coming up from behind he gets a glimpse of the injured creature before them.
"What do you think, Kaelroc? Just slipping into the deep brush to live or die? Or trying to escape whatever did this to it?"
+++++
(( That Nat20 / 26 Medicine check will come in handy now! ))
(( How does this injured animal react to the Tall and Small parting the brush? ))
(( Also, is this a species I've seen before or is this another 'odd mutated version' from the swamp? Is that a Nature check? ))
Mender slowly stumbles out of the tent and makes his way towards Kaelroc and Mugwort. "So what did you find?" He would ask as he rubs his eye with his free hand "You guys arn't bleeding or anything so it can't be that bad.." he would add as he approached..
Looking at the pup, Kaelroc is startled by everyone being awakened. I think you should heal it. I also think this could be a trap. If we cannot heal it, we should bring it mercy. Mugwort, can clearly see Kaelroc has more emotions then ever displayed before.
While noting the mountain-born's suggestion, you decide to take a closer look before deciding on a course of action. The pup recoils as the branches are parted, growling at you weakly. With a natural 20 on your medicine check and a nature check of 17, you are not only able to identify the species - red wolf - but have also come across creatures suffering from this malady before, just a week or so ago. You recall that a population of voles in your area had contracted it first, followed by adders, hawks and weasels among other species (the voles' natural predators) who each displayed a similar reaction despite the difference in their anatomies. You have until this moment invested little thought in the matter, but upon inspecting the cub recognize symptoms like dehydration, ulcers and kidney damage (the latter indicated by obvious fatigue and swelling of the joints) typical of waterborne diseases such as cholera.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Mugwort assesses the injured creature and does a running commentary to all, " I have seen this type of creature before... red wolf, I think."
"Kaelroc, Mender, Mimzy... I need a time for a ritual so I can speak directly to this poor animal, so I am trusting you all to cover my back.. er.. all sides.. just in case this IS a trap. Sadly, I think this is a darkness in the swamp. I have seen injured animals 'like' this suffering before. Small ones get sick; larger ones feed on the weak and get sick. This goes beyond 'simple' swamp sickness though."
"The pup will need fresh, clean water and food once I heal it. IF I can heal it." So saying, Mugwort will spend the next ten minutes going through the motions of a ritual which will allow him to Speak with Animals . Once he can converse 'in wolf'; Mugwort will assure the wolf pup that is only here to help and heal him as much as he can.
Once the ritual is complete, Mugwort will softly and calmly speak to the wolf pup; letting it know that he is only here to help and heal. He will keep up a soft patter of talking as Mugwort approaches and kneels down next to the wolf. "It is going to be okay. I am going to touch you. You are safe. This will help some. You are safe."
Once Mugwort can lay a hand on the pup, he will cast Cure Wounds (first level) <<< 8
Mugwort watches the pup for signs of healing of the wounds. He knows he has not touched whatever diseases or poisons might be active... that would take another spell he does not have 'at the ready'. "Bog take me," he whispered, "I really need a long rest."
Watching and waiting, Mugwort continues watching the pup to see if another healing spell is necessary for the 'heal-able' damage.
After explaining the issue to your companions, you cast an enchantment which attunes your temporal lobe to the grunts, yaps and howling of the wolves. The cub understands you, and although it is too young or weak to utter anything meaningful in response, it seems to react trustingly, laying its head beside you.
Cure wounds seals and cleanses many of the open ulcers which riddle its body and certainly alleviates some of its pain, but does not appear to have any effect on the crippling fatigue... nor does it do much about the spiny protrusions. Still, you are satisfied with what you have achieved so far.

All...
As Mugwort tends to the wolf cub, what do each of you choose to do?
Mender would keep an eye out for any threats as Mugwort performs his ritual. when he mentions needing food and water, the Kobold would point his rod towards the earth and cast mold earth to create two small holes in the ground around 1 square foot each. he would then cast create food and water. steam would shoot from his conch and pool in the two holes. In one, fresh water would materialize while dried meat appeared in the other. The mist would also move around the camp site and fill any of the water skins or containers that were not full and another large pile of dried meat would appear piled inside Menders bakcpack.
Mimzy steps forward slowly and cautiously approach the wolf to stand next to the Goblin and uses her Beast Speech to Speak with Animals (at will) to utter a few calming words then proceeds to cast Lesser Restoration upon it (action) and follows up with her Healing Light 14(bonus action x3)
Note the Following Round: Mimzy follows up by casting Cure Wounds11 (action) and once more employs her Healing Light 7(bonus action x2) expending her healing abilities except for one remaining slot that if needed she could cast one more Cure Wounds until she can get some rest.
