"That's a good call, Russel, perhaps if the kobolds are out we can overpower that fat lizard quick enough before anyone else notices. That is if anyone knows the spell."
The sleep spell! Xarian is sure he remembers reading that one in the tattered spell book he had found. But as with all the arcane magic inscribed within the tome, he has not yet deciphered the secrets nor mastered the technique of casting the spell. He shakes his head lamely at Russel's suggestion.
"What is that thing?" The big man stares at the scaly... reptile (?) and muses, whispering low.
"Never seen lizard folk, but I thought they walked on two legs? Kobolds I've seen, but are they working together with the human looters by the other house? Seems like a weird alliance. And all they are doing is stealing valuables in those bags? Clearly they're not after the pumpkins in this patch..."
Having fought a few bandits during his time as town guardsman, Xarian attempts to discern whether the two groups of disparate humanoids appear to be working in concert, and what they seem to be taking from these dwellings. Unfortunately, the strangeness of the situation leaves him lost.
Russel: Looking at the western group, they're definitely all standard humanoids. Mostly humans, a few half-elves it looks like.
Xarian: It would be a pretty big coincidence for two different groups of raiders to hit a town at the exact same time. Even as confused as you are...They're probably working together.
As you all discuss amongst yourselves, you hear a frustrated screech from the northern group. One of the kobolds throws something on the ground in anger, and begins to simply bang on the door relentlessly.
Kiya inches forward with the others. "I can't put them to sleep either, but I can set them on fire." She says flatly. "I like your idea though Trystane. If they see you, we'll make short work of them."
"Very well, I can help you here. I have been looking a bit at their behaviour... Just get ready if this doesn't work" . In a swift mouvement of hands, Zelyvia cast a spell. Little.music notes swirls around her and in a second, she morphs into one of the half-elf humanoids she had observed (Disguise Self, no concentration, 1h). She then walks towards the north group of Kobolds and shouts from a distance "You there, they need you at the church ! That way, hurry up" she adds pointing away from the house
The kobolds heads all swivel to Zelyviaas she calls out to them. Without a moment's hesitation, they stop what they're doing and begin scurrying south past her to the temple, chittering amongst themselves. The drake follows them loyally, waddling along behind them. The street is now clear.
Nature 10 IC: Russel quietly says "That, was not, a lizard man, it seemed more draconic." He readies his bow, holding his action "What do you want to do?"
“Neat trick, Zelyvia,” exclaims Trystane. “Let’s get quick inside. I doubt they check the house again if they were inside already,” he states and crosses the street in a dash and enters the merchant Osborne’s house. Once inside he tries to stay clear of the windows in order to make it harder from those outside to spot him.
Xarian's jaw hangs open for a moment as Zelyvia transforms her appearance and fools the kobolds. Not to mention the scaly thing.
Another spell I am sure I saw in the spell book. Disguise Self... or was it Alter Self?Xarian gets lost in thought before snapping back to the moment.
"Wow. That was great," he whispers. "So now we just tip toe across to Ozzie's house to look for his wife, kids and sister-in-law? Might end up having to fight those kobolds and the other men anyway if the family all took refuge in the church. Or maybe Zelyvia can trick these looters some more."
Xarian crosses quietly northwest to the Crutchley (or rather his sister-in-law's) residence to look inside. Jumping the fence to the backyard so as to stay out of sight of the marauders to the south and hugging the wall of the house. Hoping the sheep don't bleat and give their position way.
Come to think of it, they'll just assume its more looters making the animals nervous, won't they? Why wouldn't sheep be bleating in this situation?
If he gets to the backyard safely, Xarian tries to peek carefully through the windows of the residence, and really all around, including in the windows of the northern house and elsewhere along lines of sight, for either blonde women and children, or further interlopers ransacking the houses.
Apollo sprints after Trystane and Xarian, following them inside the house. He was thankful to avoid conflict for now, but in the back of his mind he knew it was inevitable. However..."Good work Zelyvia, hopefully we can take that trick of yours as far as possible."
"Come to think of it, did anyone else get a good look at this group? Are they uniformed? Could be there's enough of them that we could just blend in."
Russel moves across the street following the group, to the house they think is Osborne’s, trying to stay out of sight. Russel thinks upon What Apollo asks with Russel's observations earlier. (@DM)
Russel:Now that you've gotten a closer look at the creature...There's something unnatural about it, like it doesn't belong in nature. You can't quite pin down what, but something about it just invokes a feeling of unease.
Russel: From your earlier observations, and from Zelyvia's disguise...They were in fact uniformed. Over black leathers they were these strange black robes that split down the middle and flayed out like wings, with shoulder pauldrons decorated with these spines that curved outward. They all wear these masks that flares outward into large, wing-link projections, reminiscent of a dragon's headcrest.
Xarian: Within this house or around it, you catch no sight of the merchant's family. The house you're in now has been thoroughly torn to pieces inside. Furniture overturned, drawers and cabinets ripped out and emptied. Looking out the windows, the house the kobolds were trying to get into seems untouched so far. The doors are clearly locked and curtains drawn over the windows. If there's anyone inside, you'd have no way of telling from the outside. To the south the group of six you saw earlier are still busy looting the house. Beyond that, you can see more groups of figures moving through the smoke to the southwest.
Xarian slouches his large form back out from the house while Bookmark continues to preen lazily on his shoulder.
"Ozzie's house, or his sister-in-law's, whatever, is already ransacked and no one's here I'm pretty sure. Can't see into the house to the north that the kobolds and lizard-thing were trying to get into. Family might be holed up in that northern house or down in the church? We could either attack the men and kobolds, or maybe Zelyvia could trick them some more? Or just head back to the church. Not sure, but we should probably move quick."
"Is anyone confident in their ability to get into that house without busting through a window?" Kiyaasks after hearing Xarian'srundown of the situation around them. "Since it's close...I'd personally like to look and see. After that I think the church is the most likely spot. There were a lot of raiders around that one though."
„If anyone can open the door quickly and quietly, I also think we should check it out,“ says Trystane. „After that we should check the church, but I fear there are too many for us to handle.“
"I wouldn't mess with those raiding the house, unless we have too, I think they're part of the invading army, didn't Osborn say the house had a blue roof?" Sticking to the walls of the buildings, Russel, moves north,, checks the door the Kobold was banging on, suspecting it to be locked Passive investigation 12 He also checks whatever the Kobold threw to the ground Passive perception 14
Russel: The door you investigate is indeed locked, and on the ground next to it is slightly rusty pair of thieves tools. Unable to force their way in with brute strength, it seems the kobolds had been trying to pick the lock instead.
Russel points towards the kobolds quietly says "Anyone know the sleep spell? I've seen it used against such weaklings"
