Syllen barely registers Xanrym’s remarks as he continues forward to attack the remaining Ghasts. Right before attacking he turns to Xanrym and speaks in elvish.
“We shall drink to a job well done when we get off the cursed ship!”
Khessa for sure does not change a winning strategy... the fierce undead have not yet been able to touch her, so she keeps concentration on her spell... and focus on her blade, spinning it in a quick circle to her Ghast's neck.
Xanrym and Syllen's attacks hit, with Syllen again felling one of the Ghasts. Khessa and Avery are then able to gang up on the remaining Ghast, who falls back into the water with a deep rattle. All the monsters are rekilled, never to rise again.
You now stand in the half sunken hold of the ship, dozens of boxes and crates littered around its western side.
Theldrin does his best to shake off his frustration with his markmanship, focusing on the fact that the battle was won and it was a team effort. For a moment he pictures Radir, the crossbow master at his old school, scolding him for not taking the time to properly line up his shots. Then with a shrug he casts Light on his staff and starts to search the old for chests, taking advantage of his Ring of Water Walking if needed to gain a vantage point where the water is deep.
You now stand in the half sunken hold of the ship, dozens of boxes and crates littered around its western side.
As silence falls over the hold, Xanrym stows his crossbow. From what they've learned, it seems that the accursed ship was not attacked by pirates or sahuagin sea devils, so Xanrym is hopeful that Aubrek's crate is still here in the ship's cargo hold. He looks at all of the boxes and suggests splitting up to search for Aubrek's crate: "The one marked with the letter 'A'."
Since Xanrym and Theldrin already closest to the south (stern) end of the hold, he suggests that they start at the south end and work their way north. The others could pair up and start their searches either amidships or at the north (bow) end of the hold.
Xanrym - Investigation: 18 (If it should be Perception, that would be Unable to parse dice roll..)
Theldrin scowls at Xanrym, obviously not amused. (OOC: though werelemur is LOL)
Heh. Theldrin could wonder aloud at how Xanrym manages to be so accurate with his crossbow when he cannot seem to see the big, obvious "A" marked on that crate that he just walked right past!
Syllen takes a moment to take in the victory. As it has been years since he has hunted with a pack, Syllen closes his eyes. Relaxing for a second he thinks to himself that the spider that ran away would be foolish to return. Coming back to reality, Syllen looks at the group.
“It would be best if I spend 10 minutes casting detect magic in case we missed anything important.”
With that unless someone contradicts him, Syllen will start to cast detect magic as a ritual.
Khessa is elated at having eliminated what she believes (and hopes) to be the last remaining threat on the ship: the undead! She pats everyone on the shoulder: "Good job! The ship is ours! All that's left is to find what we came for and make the journey home!"
Since so many are already searching, both by mundane and magical means, the blonde arcane warrior instead watches the waters, so as not to be caught off guard if something else arises in the midst of the search.
'We've really achieved a lot...' pleasant thoughts run through the tall adventuress's mind 'and in such a short time! What a team... If only, one day, they would dare to try a rescue mission with me in the Underdark...' and familiar faces come to her mind... sweet faces, carrying an almost unbearable mix of hope and pain. But not even all the pain of the Abyss and the Nine Hells combined could stop her from cultivating hope...
Theldrin is the first to spot the crate amongst the debris. Marked with a large letter ‘A’. As Syllen’s Detect Magic takes effect, he senses an abjuration magic coming from inside the crate.
Theldrin grins as he spots the "A" on the crate, calling the others over enthusiastically. Then he looks around cautiously to make sure no surprise spider attacks are imminent.
"Good eye, Theldrin!", Xanrym exclaims. He takes out a crowbar from his backpack, eager to pry open the crate and see whether it contains Aubrek's chest.
There will still be some work to do to get the chest onto the rowboat and over to the Soul of Winter, and then they have to deliver the chest safely back to Aubrek in Nyr Dyv. But that seems an easy task compared to trying to retrieve the chest from the dark depths of Nyr Dyv if, for example, Krell had thrown the chest overboard at some point in the past days. Xanrym is a bit heedless of any possible remaining dangers. It's possible that there are other creatures hiding in the hold, but he figures that any big monsters would have attacked them when the Company was focused on the ghasts.
(OOC: If it requires an actual STR check to open the crate, Xanrym gives the crowbar to Khessa or Avery to use in opening the marked crate. Otherwise, he'll just use it to pry off the lid to see whether its contents match the description Aubrek gave them of his chest.)
As Syllen sees Xanrym pull out a crowbar he will get his attention. “Xanrym, it seems that there is an abjuration spell coming from inside the chest. It might not be a chest that can be opened with force.”
(OOC: Just to make sure that we're all on the same page...when Xanrym got out his crowbar, he was just trying to open the crate. Aubrek said, "you’ll find a chest inside a crate, marked with the letter ‘A’." That is, the "crate" that Teldrin spotted is just a big, wooden shipping crate. Aubrek's chest was supposed to be inside the crate, but I think that we haven't opened the crate or seen the chest yet. Syellen sensed "abjuration magic coming from inside the crate," and I guess that he's detecting the abjuration on the chest itself.)
"Or worse yet," Khessa points out "the abjuration spell could have been put in place by our client to kill a would-be thief..."
Xanyrm waves away that concern and says, "I"m just going to open the crate so that we can ensure that Aubrek's chest is inside. Besides, it may be easier to move the chest by itself without the crate. I'm sure that Aubrek would have warned us if he put a magical trap on the crate or preventing us from moving the chest. I don't remember whether everyone stayed until I was done talking to Aubrek, but he told me that the chest is magically sealed so that only Aubrek can open it."
So will you open the crate, or take some other measure to ensure it’s safety?
Yes, Xanrym will open up the crate. (He will not try to open the chest if he finds the chest inside the crate.) He's not very worried about opening up this crate. As I said:
