Khessa is perplexed: not only is it unclear what happened to the two humanoids lying on the ground - but also who they are and what they were doing there!
As Avery approaches to investigate, the blonde arcane warrior stands ready to unleash magical fire at the first sign of hostility - either from the two on the ground, if they are faking, or from whoever struck them down, if that creature were to reveal itself.
Avery will continue to look for traps, anything that might indicate what may have happened to the two figures as he cautiously approaches, but remains out of reach of the figures. Perception: 4, investigation: 15
Xanrym suggests that Theldrin and/or Coriana could use Mage Hand to poke the bodies and see whether they respond. Or, if someone wants to try rolling them over or poking them from a distance, Xanrym offers the pole that he has been carrying.
If all attempts at investigation from a distance fail, then Xanrym could try to creep closer to the bodies quietly and see whether he can at least determine what species they are and whether they're dead.
Coriana finds the pulsing power and smell like lightning almost refreshing, what with how much the magic she has been practicing involves lightning.
She approaches within 10 feet of the bodies, and uses mage hand to poke at them, hoping to move them enough to get a better look at a face or something, to see who they are, and if they still live. [[Perception 18, Medicine 17]]

Coriana - Company of the Grey Chain Wagner - Dragon Heist: Bards. DM - The Old Keep
Khessa already has kind of a 'pole': her Pike! She then proceeds to autonomously roll over the two humanoids from a distance (unless Coriana already managed to do that), with the butt of the Pike, ready to change grip and strike them with a point thrust, should they prove dangerous.
You are able to spin one figure, a male halfling in violet robes, over easily. The other figure, what looks like wide-eyed goblin, is incredibly heavy. This creature seems to be made from stone. The halfling has clearly been shot with arrows, then had the arrows removed, and close inspection reveals he seems to be clutching a piece of paper in his hands.
Khessa is overwhelmed by curiosity, at this point. She cautiously approaches, keeping low, and recovers the piece of paper. She reads it, sharing in whispers the content with her fellow adventurers.

Xanrym is fascinated by the body of the goblin. While Khessa tries to take the note from the halfling's hands, he takes out his spear and taps the goblin's body with it to check whether it really sounds and feels like stone.

(OOC: To be more clear, the Investigation check was for determining whether the goblin "body" is really a stone statue and, more generally, trying to piece together the clues of this bizarre scene. For example, if the goblin is made of stone, is it a statue? Or more like a real goblin who was turned to stone through some arcane means?)
The note reads, "Fhadheela, I have been delayed. My servants carry the King's bones and all the items of his champions I could find. Merthuvial I cannot locate. I will spend a bit more time trying to find it, but I am sending these on so our rendezvous is not compromised. Please give the Vanguard my regards, I will be along shortly... Xeron"
Xanrym is able to deduce that the goblin was in fact turned to stone. Dusk sees a e is a vertical chimney, its width slowly narrowing as it rises, until it finally pinches off completely 40 feet above the level of the terrace. At the level of the terrace, the chimney is 15 feet in diameter. The smooth, vertical walls of the chimney descend through the utter darkness to the hard, flat floor 150 feet below. There the diameter widens to about 50 feet, creating an elongated, teardrop-shaped hollow. He also notices footprints leading calmly off the terrace away from the two humanoids, as though someone simply strolled off the edge.

Xanrym says, "Xeron? That was the name of the Yuan-Ti sorcerer from Toska's letter -- the one she said their group defeated. I guess this 'Fhadheela' must be one of Xeron's masters. I'm not sure whether 'the vanguard' is just a generic term, like the advanced guard of an army, or a strange title or honorific, 'The Vanguard,' used by Xeron's cult."
Has Xanrym every heard of Merthuvial? (History: 7) In context, Xeron seems to be indicate that it's one of the "items of his (the Forgotten King's) champions."
Xanrym is able to deduce that the goblin was in fact turned to stone.
(OOC: Could he tell whether the halfling was killed around the same time that the goblin was turned to stone? Does the goblin-statue carry a bow and quiver?)
Xanrym relays his conclusion to the others in case they weren't already aware. He wonders out loud, "What could have done such a thing? Some horrible monster? A powerful sorcerer?" Xanrym wonders whether the halfling was working for Xeron or whether the halfling simply intercepted / stole the letter. And was the halfling working with the goblin? Fighting it? Or are the two bodies unrelated?
Xanrym proposes to search the halfling's body for other gear or, especially, information. He hopes to find some evidence that could answer any of these questions.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Theldrin quietly shares what he saw through Dusk's eyes with the group. As he listens to Khessa read the note, he also tries to recall if he's ever come across anything related to "Merthuvial" in his studies, then will search the Halfling's body.
Khessa sighs: "Well, I don't see neither 'the King's bones' nor 'all the items of his champions' here - so whoever killed or petrified these poor guys took them. And from the trail it looks like the killers simply strolled off the edge."
"At the very least, this means Fhadheela won't get the items" the blonde arcane warrior continues. "That doesn't mean we shouldn't probably go down ourselves - both to retrieve these things, and to make sure we eliminate Xeron as well."

Syllen will pick up a small rock and give it to Nav.
