The head Kuo-Toa steps forward, muttering an incantation and casting Hold Person at 2nd Level at Xanrym and Avery. (with a 90ft range it just reaches Xanrym i believe.)
The Hold Person doesn't hold and the head priest yells at his two Monitors to advance through the Hypnotic Pattern with eyes closed casting Shield of Faith on the one that got hit. They do so, taking the Dash action to get through the Pattern.
You all are up. The Kuo-Toa are coming on strong, They have Avery in melee and are trying to push forward to the rest of your group.
Khessa was slow to react, as, due to her lack of knowledge of the language, she only realized hostilities were imminent when the Kuo-Toa descended on the party like furies.
The blonde arcane warrior curses herself internally: because of her hesitation, the enemies are about to overwhelm the party! "Not on my watch," she snarls under her breath, feeling Xanrym's exhortation burning in her soul, and moves to the opposite side of Avery to try to stem the flow of enemies.
As she moves into position, the tall adventuress, knowing she'll be in the middle of a furious melee, mutters a short, esoteric chant, and her outlines become Blurry.
[[OOC: Khessa uses her Movement to position herself and her Action to cast Blur. ]]
Seeing the power of the priest, Syllen decides to use stronger magic.
Action: Cast Conjure Animals behind Coriana. (Form of a pack of wolves.)
Move: 5 feet east.(Move Conjure Animals in-between Coriana and Avery. All creatures 10 feet from Avery need to make a DC 15 Dex Save or take 25 slashing damage.)
BA: (Not mentioned but assuming Syllen’s Starry Form ended.) Syllen uses lvl 1 spell slot to activate Starry Form(Dragon).
The head Kuo-Toa steps forward, muttering an incantation and casting Hold Person at 2nd Level Hold Monster at 6th level at Xanrym and Avery. (with a 90ft range it just reaches Xanrym i believe.) Xanrym makes a DC 14 WIS Save or is Paralyzed: 18
Perhaps it's Xanrym's recent experience with being in thrall to a much more powerful entity (the Aboleth), or maybe some of the Aboleth's alien intelligence still permeate his thoughts, but Xanrym is easily able to resist the Kuo-Toa's priest's spell. But now that he's gaining power, Xanrym realizes that it makes him a target for other spellcasters who want to break his concentration or turn him against his companions. He remembers that this same spell was immediately broken by the Aboleth's power when he used it on the Merrows. And here, it's even more important for Xanrym to keep the troop of Kuo-Toa guards hypnotized and out of the fight -- at least until Khessa, Coriana, and Avery take care of these first few.
Round 2: Xanrym
Xanrym knows that Kuo-Toa are rumored to capture their enemies alive, but he doesn't want to rely on their mercy know that they know the party is aligned with Es Sarch. Better to beat them back. Deciding that it's critical for him to maintain his concentration on his spell, Xanrym simply moves out of view of the Kuo-Toa priest (at least) and hides. If he can find enough cover, he'll try to hide from all of the Kuo-Toa, but even if the immediate area is barren, he thinks that his cloak may help keep him hide from the Kuo-Toa priest if he can at least briefly get out of sight.
Movement: Move up to 30-ft to find a place to hide. I can't tell from the map whether there's any cover within 30-ft of Xanrym. If they're essentially on a flat road or cave floor, maybe not If there's anything that could provide at least 3/4-cover (boulders, giant mushroom patch, a bit of ruined wall, etc.), he'll move to hide behind that cover. If not, he moves 30-ft straight northwest (ending around 3-squares west of where Khessa started on her turn). The long tunnel of the gatehouse should make it possible for him to get Total Cover from the priest on his turn even if he's essentially out in the open. Khessa can Coriana will be blocking the Kuo-Toa guards from moving toward him, and Xanrym will simply crouch low, pulling his cloak around him and trying to remain still, like a dark boulder. Action: Hide - Stealth: 22 (advantage from Cloak of Elvenkind) Free Action: None
(OOC: The hiding rules have changed a bit in 2024. I think that as long as Xanrym can break line of sight with the priest, he can attempt to hide. That is, I don't think that he needs to hide behind a wall or tree as long as the obstruction totally blocks the priest's view of him. I'm not sure whether the priest would automatically spot Xanrym if it walked to the end of the hallway, but I guess that it still might be possible to remain hidden while wearing a Cloak of Elvenkind.
Coriana moves through the spectral wolves to take a position off of Avery's shoulder, hexes the priest and unleashes a Witch Bolt on him.
(Rolled a 2 on witch bolt, tried to see if bardic wold get me to like 14 AC for a dude in robes but rolled a 1. Coriana specifically moved one spoace behind Avery and on to his left.)
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Coriana - Company of the Grey Chain Wagner - Dragon Heist: Bards. DM - The Old Keep
The Shield of Faith drops on Monitor one as the Spectral Wolves rip into it and the other Kuo-Toa around you, killing those three instantly. Avery, with Whisper now free, tries to attack Monitor 2, but finds the sword still sticking to the shield a little. (Rolled two attacks in game log, both missed.)
The Priest's strange scepter emits bolts of lightning and takes some shots at Syllen, first trying to break his Concentration. (I'm going to roll Syllen's CON checks too to speed up my turn.)
Strange Scepter 1 against Syllen Attack: 13 Damage: 19 Lightning
The wolves stay up as the Monitors pull out two lightning crackling Bone Whips to try and entangle Khessa and Avery:
Bone Whip 1 against Khessa (Disadvantage) Attack: 11 Damage: 4 plus : 6 Lightning, and Khessa may not make Opportunity Attacks until the start of the Monitor's next turn.
Bone Whip 2 against Khessa (Disadvantage) Attack: 8 Damage: 4 plus 3 Lightning, and Khessa may not make Opportunity Attacks until the start of the Monitor's next turn.
Bone Whip 1 against Avery Attack: 19 Damage: 5 Slashing plus 9 Lightning, and Avery cannot take Opportunity Attacks until the start of the Monitor's next turn.
Bone Whip 1 against Avery Attack: 22 Damage: 8 Slashing plus 9 Lightning, and Avery cannot take Opportunity Attacks until the start of the Monitor's next turn.
You all are up. The Kuo-Toa Priest hurls lightning at you while the Monitor's put up a fight with whips at the entrance to the gatehouse. The other Kuo-Toa are all hypnotized still I believe.
Hiding (as always) is a bit unclear in the new rules. But I think I would rule that Xanrym is only hidden from the priest, and not the Monitors. As there is little cover around and they've been able to see you clearly this whole time.
(OOC: Syllen is currently under the affect of dragon starry form so on any concentration saving throw he counts a 9 or less as a 10. Because of that he will automatically pass any concentration save on damage less than 22.)
When the Kuo-Toas end their turn they need to make a DC 15 Dex Save or take 15 slashing damage from Conjure Animals. I think by the spells description I need to roll damage separately for each creature. That seems harder to do for PBP format but if you want me to that is fine or you can roll save and damage for creatures that end their turn 10 feet from the wolves.
Khessa smiles confidently as she sees her spell working as intended: her blurry outlines make the attackers' blows inaccurate—and futile.
"OK, my turn now!" the blonde arcane warrior counters with a wide swing of her recently acquired magical greatsword. The enchanted steel quickly slices through the air and suddenly lands on the Kuo-Toa's flank.
[[ OOC: Attacking the Kuo-Toa near her with her Greatsword ]]
Oh and that first Kuo-Toa get's to try and stick Avery with his Shield as he missed it with an attack:
Avery makes a DC 11 STR Save or Whisper is stuck to the Kuo-Toa's shield and becomes Grappled: 17
