"Well, you're a real adventurer too, aren't you, Syllen?" Khessa's blue eyes turn, shining with interest, to the elf's "You're not an... aehm... 'improvised' one like me... You chose this kind of life, didn't you?"
Avery finds out from his short conversations with other merchants that Prince Drallion has really only two more assets to his name and . They recently hired Dwarven ship Soul of Winter, and his flagship, the Emperor of the Waves.
Avery will return with the information and share with the group
The dark woman speaks, “Ooh, company. Looks like we’ve got some fancy lads here, ready to squeeze us out of the job. Well, mark my words, no fishbaron’s lackeys are gonna freeze Coriana the Forsaken out of a fair chance at work.”
Hearing the woman says 'us' and 'we," Xanrym wonders whether she's speaking literally. He asks, "Oh? Are you all together?" Xanrym sounds surprised but interested as he looks from the dark woman in the faded leather, to the elf with a trident, and finally to the warrior in shining armor. He wonders what adventure brought them together.
"Don't worry Coriana, you'll see..." the third of those already present stands up, gently placing a hand on the shoulder of the woman in shades of gray "If we were all invited, there will be work for everyone! If this 'Aubreck' had only wanted this famous company, he would have invited only them, right? It's clear that he's in the middle of some trouble so big that it requires everyone's contribution".
Now that she's stood up, it's hard not to notice her, this athletic and imposing woman. Her metal plate armor is in stark contrast to the shades of gray of the other - it's so shiny that it would seem to have never been used, were it not for the numerous small notches left instead by the blows it must have absorbed in battle.
"And all together, we'll get him out of this trouble, right guys?" the woman laughs,
"Indeed!", Xanrym says, "Our Company received Prince Drallion's invitation, but we didn't realize that he had also invited others." Realizing that that could sound ungracious or confrontational, he adds with a smile and a laugh, "One cannot have too large a party for a large party secures its own amusement! The more, the merrier!"
the blonde warrior forcefully shakes hands with both of them, introducing herself: "Khessa! Khessa Cabbagefield! Nice to meet famous adventurers like you! Also because before" she candidly admits "I didn't know you at all... Never heard of this 'Company of the Grey Chain'..." the total lack of malice in her words and in her gaze testifies that she has no intention of offending the famous heroes... but is simply speaking with naive honesty "...But you know, I'm not from here... I come from the Nyr Dyv area... And I was born and raised in a tiny hamlet in the countryside... Well, that just means I'll get to know you now, right?" she laughs again "And what better way than to see you in action?"
Xanrym seems a bit overwhelmed by Khessa's physical presence and a little embarrassed by the reference to the Company's fame. "I am pleased to meet you, Khessa." He makes a dismissive gesture with his hand and says, "Oh, we're not so famous. Our Company is just starting to make its mark. We recently rescued a small farming village from a dark cult and defeated their false god, a monstrous naga! But that was far from here, in the Sheldomar Valley. Perhaps I'll share the tale if we end up traveling together. But now that Liarin has left, we're down to just three. So -- as I said -- the more the merrier!" He looks to the stairs for a moment and says, "I'm sure that Avery will be joining us soon."
Looking at the other three again, Xanrym asks the group of them, "Has your crew been together long? Is this your first time at the High Tower Inn?"
"Oh, no," Khessa admits, "we just met on our way here... We haven't worked together before."
"To be honest," the blonde arcane warrior admits, "I had to be self-taught from the beginning... I didn't choose this 'career'..." Her blue eyes visibly sadden, as if from bad memories. "It was the circumstances. And up until now, I've had very little help most of the time - and that's why I tried to learn a few different things... not just how to use weapons a little, but also how to cast a few magic tricks..."
"That'll be a nice improvement," the tall adventuress finds her smile again and actually seems enthusiastic, "to have real specialists with me! I'll definitely be able to learn a lot! Plus, collectively we'll have more options at our disposal!"
“We’re not a group, I’m just referring to the fact that the three of us independent contractors are in the presence of greatness, apparently.” Coriana’s tone has shifted, while her initial remarks were more bitter, her current tone, while laced with sarcasm, is more open and friendly.

Coriana - Company of the Grey Chain Wagner - Dragon Heist: Bards. DM - The Old Keep
Theldrin shakes Khessa's hand and smiles warmly, "It's indeed a pleasure to meet you..." he turns and nods towards Coriana and Syllen. "All of you. Well, I'm sure the Prince has a good reason for asking all of us here, which we should find out soon enough."
Xanrym isn't one to argue unless there's some purpose to it, and he meant what he said about forming a larger group. To diffuse any tension with the dark-haired woman, whom Khessa called Coriana, Xanrym makes an overly-elaborate bow (clearly intended to be humorous but not mocking) and says in an exaggerated, silly voice, "Coriana! It is an honor to be called thus by someone as great as yourself!" Standing, he continues in a tone that's more sincere but still light-hearted, "If the job allows it, I hope that we have an opportunity to work together, the three of us (once Avery arrives) and the three of you. Greatness doubled! What does that come to? Excellence? Preeminence? Perhaps even perfection!"
To Khessa, Xanrym says, "Strangers brought together in a common cause? That's just how our Company first formed! Some believe that there are no 'chance meetings' and that the Lady of Fate weaves our threads together if we are predestined to meet. But I like to think that we make our own fate, that our decisions matter, and that we need to have the courage to seize the opportunities in life, and the wisdom to recognize them!" Speaking of luck and opportunity, Xanrym remember a bit of an old epic, possibly because of the was speaking of luck and opportunity, and maybe the recent talk of Nyr Dyv and the Emperor of the Waves brought those lines to mind. He quotes a bit of an old epic tale in a practiced meter:
"There is a tide in the affairs of men, Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; Omitted, all the voyage of their life Is bound in shallows and in miseries."
Xanrym finds it interesting that Khessa is as armored as Avery but has still learned some magic, like Theldrin. The modest background, the lack of a mentor, and the need to learn whatever you can, wherever you can resonates with Xanrym, but he feels that there's a more tragic story behind Khessa's decision to take up arms.
Xanrym tries to yield the conversation to Theldrin and the others for a bit, now that the "ice is broken." He's still not sure what to make of Syllen. If the elf continues to say little, Xanrym tries to put him at ease by quietly making a more formal greeting in Elvish while the others are talking. Then pointing to the trident, Xanrym asks in Common, "Are you a follower of the Lord of the Undersea then?"
Khessa does not notice anything strange in Coriana - probably because she is surprised and interested by Xanrym's last words: "Lord of the Undersea?" she wonders "From the name, it sound like someone capable of enabling others to explore the underwater world! Are you really a follower of such a fellow, Syllen?"
'I wonder if by chance...' the blonde arcane warrior thinks, without daring to ask for now '...from the depths of the Lake of Unknown Depths one can perhaps reach the Underdark without attracting attention?'
Dear faces come back to her memory... Faces that remained in that deep darkness... Faces that she will never be able to forget. Nor resign herself to abandoning there.
“Well I may be an adventurer, I have yet to accomplish anything of note. I also mostly work by myself so I have yet to see how other adventurers work together. I guess you can say I chose this life. I more think of myself as on a journey and when I need money a job is a job.”
Turning to Xanrym and pointing at his trident.
“This is just something I found that is good for hunting. I am not connected to the Lord of the Undersea but to the secrets within the Constellations.”

Or perhaps he's just so fond of melodrama that he misses the subtle cues in normal interpersonal interactions. In this case, he was probably just too focused on Syllen at the time to notice Coriana's reaction.)

Xanrym is so interested in these new adventurers and the possibility of asking them to join their Company in the future that he's paying more attention than usual. As he speaks with Syllen, he catches Coriana's odd reaction out of the corner of his eye. He wonders at it but says nothing about it at the moment since he expects Prince Drallion to call them in at any moment.
“This is just something I found that is good for hunting. I am not connected to the Lord of the Undersea but to the secrets within the Constellations.”
Xanrym is nonplussed. He normally has plenty to say, but here, he blinks and simply says, "Fascinating!"
As you're all talking, you hardly notice a very well dressed dwarf walk out of the apartment into the waiting room. He has long hair and a beard as you've come to expect from a dwarf, but they are elaborately platted and stylesed. He wears the black suit of a butler, and he addreses you in a formal tone, although you do still detect the ruff dwarven drawl underneath the posh accent. "Prince Aubrek Drallion will see you now." And the dwarf motions you into the apartment.
When you enter the apartment, it is as elegant as the rest of the High Tower Inn. The smell of fine wood enters your nostrils, and the walls are covered in nice but not too personalised artwork. The bustle of the inn below is somewhat drowned out in this room. Sitting at a desk on the other side of the room is Prince Drallion. Clearly a noble man, he keeps his iron-gray hair pulled back in a short ponytail, and his mustache is neatly tended. However, Xanrym would notice that his clothes are somewhat disheveled, and have not been in fashion for a number of months. He greets you warmly, "Welcome adventurers, and the Company of the Grey Chain! Very pleased to meet you indeed. Like me, it seems you know a high value opportunity when you see one. I am Aubrek Drallion, some call me a merchant prince, but that is all bluster and formality. I am a merchant, a very good one at that. I would usually have you in one of my manors in the city, but circumstances have forced me to opt for more conspicuous apartments." He shifts in his seat and adopts a more casual position, "To put this matter plainly, I need your help with a rather delicate job. My flagship, by beloved, the Emporer of the Waves is missing. It had been on a very important mission to Urnst and became lost somewhere in the Nyr Dyv, the gigantic inland ocean just upstream of this city. While that would be worse news enough, the ship is also carrying quite a tremendous payload and I wish to have that back too. Do you think you all would be available to help me in a retrieval mission?" He looks at you calculatedly.
Khessa muses to herself: 'I usually help the helpless... common folk in need... not merchants rich enough to be considered princes... However, the ship's crew could use some help! And they are definitely common folk... Plus... getting on good terms with this Aubrek might help me organize an expedition into the Underdark in the future!'
Therefore, it is with enthusiasm that the blonde arcane warrior fixes her blue eyes on those of the prince: "Of course we can help you, Aubrek! However, it will be useful to have details"she quickly thinks, while the shiny armor emits reflections from the room's light sources "Can you give us the detailed route that the ship was supposed to follow? By following it backwards, we should be able to find out where the problems occurred. And can you give us the composition of the crew and the descriptions of its members? So we might recognize some of them, if we saw them. And can you give us the list of goods that made up the cargo? So, if we found out that the ship was sunk to steal the cargo, maybe we could locate it..."
"If you can't tell us everything, well, fine all the same..." the tall adventuress conceeds "but you understand, Aubrek, that the more details we have, the easier our task will be... You know, I come from the Nyr Dyv area... several people there trust me. If we have details that allow us to ask the right questions, someone might have seen something - and put us on the right path".
“Well, that’s the opposite of my usual line of work making ships disappear. Still, it will be good to be out on the water, even if it is fresh. As much information as you can supply, Drallion, is helpful, but there are other sources as well. I have less contacts in the Nyr Dyv than I do in blue-water ports, but I’ve done a few jobs there recently, my one question that hasn’t been asked… do you have any enemies or rivals that might have targeted your vessel?” Coriana says her bit in a businesslike tone that contradicts her earlier sarcastic manner.

Coriana - Company of the Grey Chain Wagner - Dragon Heist: Bards. DM - The Old Keep
Xanrym is accustomed to speaking for the Company of the Grey Chain, and is still taking in the prince's words when Khessa and Coriana speak up. He's a bit startled, but after getting off on the wrong foot with Coriana, he decides to relax and hang back to see what he can learn. Xanrym has no experience with boats, which Corina clearly does. And he has never been to Nyr Dyv, which both women have.
There's a part of Xanrym's mind that's constantly thinking about how he would turn events into a story or an epic poem. That part is already starting to catalog possible adjectives and epithets for these new associates. Arcane warrior. Golden. Gleaming. Xanrym suspects that Khessa may do everything in her life enthusiastically. Bold. Impatient? She's clearly willing to put herself at the front of the group in this conversation. Unabashed. And from the marks in her armor, in a fight too. Dauntless.
While Xanrym listens, he also learns more about these women from the things they say. Khessa asked about the ship, crew, and then cargo. Protector. Compassionate. And did Corina just say that she makes ships disappear? Raven-haired pirate. And she was also happy to ask Aubrek questions. Brash? Daring? He's impressed by the transformation of Coriana tone, going from sarcastic -- Bitter? Betrayed? -- to businesslike -- Brisk. She was quick to ask Aubrek about enemies -- Suspicious? Wary? -- and then he remembers the involuntary twitch he saw earlier. Mysterious. Hunted? Haunted?
Xanrym tries to pull his attention back to Aubrek and his butler and to Aubrek's answers. He has his own questions, but he'll wait until he hears more.
Theldrin listens attentively to the conversation, content to let the others talk for now. It's been quite some time since he was on board a ship, though he thinks back on his sailing voyages in his duties for the Osgard family in his youth. He looks around at the assembled group as he considers the possibility of all working together to assist the Prince. His gaze then turns towards the Ring of Water Walking on his finger... an interesting twist of fate that the ring came to be his, he thinks to himself... it could be of great use if they do decide to take this mission.
Syllen watches the current scene having already decided to join but is interested in understanding the personalities of everyone in the room. The stars have always dictated Syllen’s path and this is where they have brought him. Syllen will focus on the Prince trying to understand how desperate he is and gain insight into his feelings if he is hesitant to answer any of the questions.
