Avery DC 15 CON Save or 56 Piercing Damage: 13 . Half Damage on a Success
(OOC: @drumdigy - Since Avery had a 1d8 bardic inspiration die from Xanrym, I think that we should let @Aaggie roll a 1d8 to see whether it lets Avery pass his CON save before you finalize the result of the Illithid Husk's action.)
(OOC: @drumdigby - while the Illithid Husk dodged the flames on Xanrym's turn, don't forget that it needs to make another DEX save since it ended its turn still in the bonfire's square.)
Concentration: Option 1: Create Bonfire, round 1 of 10 While the bonfire lasts, any creature who...ends its turn there must also make a DC 17 DEX saving throw or take damage: 8 (fire).
(OOC: It looks like Avery needs 2 or more to save. If the bardic inspiration rolls is a 1 Syllen will use his last Cosmic Omen to make sure he saves. Also at the start of Syllen's Turn he will heal Coriana for 8 HP as a free action so she would be back up.)
Seeing Coriana fall down, Syllen rushes over. Technically Syllen is still on turn 2 so Coriana was healed before turn 3 and should get her turn.
Start of turn: Aura of vitality: Heal Coriana 8 HP
Action: Cure Wounds level 2: Heal Coriana 31 HP
BA: Luminous Arrow Husk to Hit: 23 Damage 9 Radiant
(OOC: @drumdigby: Are you okay with me putting Syllen's familiar in the fight. I moved Syllen up so he could cast Cure Wounds but if Nav was around Syllen would have stayed back and had Nav transfer the spell.)
Khessa notes with relief that the massive monster seems completely confused by the illusory images; unsure of which one to attack, he makes a clumsy attempt at a spot where there are none and misses completely. But the relief quickly evaporates when the monster holding Avery doesn't fall dead, but insists on feasting on adventurer brains. And the terrible blow suffered by Coriana certainly doesn't improve the party's situation - Syllen manages to revive the brave heroine, but it's clear the enemy numbers must be reduced quickly. 'At the very least, no one should object to an extended rest after this latest ferocious clash!'
The blonde arcane warrior still believes saving the Knight is the priority, so she moves behind him so she can push the monster threatening him away, and again sends Anator to distract him, landing a Pike thrust at the first opportunity.
[[ OOC: Movement: a step to better position herself. Anator's Action: Help. Action: Attack Illithid Husk with her Pike ]]
Khessa's Pike Attack: 10 Damage: 11 (piercing) Bardi Inspiraton, if needed, adds 4 to the attack roll. If hits, she pushes the Illithid Husk uno square back (thanks to Push mastery property) hopefully forcing it to let Avery go (no idea if the monster can, instead, keep the grapple and drag poor Avery with itself - up to DM).
Despite her wounds at the hands of the big creature, the illithid husks appears to be the real threat. Coriana switches to bolts of arcane power to try to take it out. [[Eldritch blast: AC 12(bardic); 9 force. AC 17; 1 damage. Tentacle: AC 17; 5 damage.]]

Coriana - Company of the Grey Chain Wagner - Dragon Heist: Bards. DM - The Old Keep
(OOC: @drumdigby - I'm posting Xanrym's intent, but I'll wait to hear the results of Syllen's and Coriana's attacks before I post the full action..)
Round 3: Xanrym
Xanrym ducked back around the corner, away from the monsters, and he saw the giant Desiccator knock Coriana to the ground. Thankfully, before Xanrym could even move from his hiding spot, Syllen had rushed forward to revive her. When Xanrym moves back into a position to see the creatures, he's frustrated to see that although the Illithid Husk is surrounded by the bonfire, it has somehow maneuvered into a position where flames have not touch it.
But then -- Xanrym gasps in horror! The Illithid Husk has knocked off Avery's helmet. Blood runs down knight's face as the Illithid's tentacles seem to bore into his head!
Xanrym hesitates, dumbstruck for a moment. After Syllen revives Coriana, he hits the Illithid with another radiant missile. And then Coriana stands up and attacks the Illithid with both magic and her spectral tentacle. Xanrym springs back into action.
Option 1: If the Illithid Husk is still alive after Syllen's and Coriana's attacks, but it looks like it's at "death's door," Xanrym just tries to finish it off with True Strike if he can get a clean shot through the crowd. In this case he gives bardic inspiration to Theldrin: "Come, war-wizard. Strike true and help me finish off this horror."
Option 2: If the Illithid Husk is still alive and bloodied but looks like it's still in fighting shape, Xanrym decides to try to incapacitate it with Hypnotic Pattern. In this case, he uses Unsettling Words to debuff the Illithid Husk's saving throw.
Option 3: If Syllen and Coriana already managed to kill the Illithid, and Avery is free from it, Xanrym will try to drive the Desiccator back with Dissonant Whispers. In this case, he uses Unsettling Words to debuff the Desiccator's saving throw.
Movement: 30-ft of movement to move SW to get a clear line of sight to their opponents and then continuing south ~5-ft down the steps toward the graveyard, trying to get some cover from their opponents Action: I'll post the rolls for his action and bonus action once I see which situation we're in.
Concentration: Option 1 or 3: Create Bonfire, round 2 of 10 While the bonfire lasts, any creature who enters bonfire’s space for the first time on a turn or ends its turn there must also make a DC 17 DEX saving throw or take damage: 10 (fire). Option 2: Drop concentration on Create Bonfire to cast Hypnotic Pattern
Bardic Inspiration: Khessa (since post #6159) Coriana (since post #6189) Option 1 only: Theldrin
Once within the next 1 hour, when the you fail a D20 Test, you can use the bardic inspiration to roll **1d8** and add the number rolled to the d20, possibly turning failure into a success. If you use the bardic inspiration, but the D20 Test still fails, you keep the inspiration die because of Xanrym's Unfailing Inspiration.
(OOC: Note that both Khessa and Coriana still have a 1d8 bardic inspiration die because of Unfailing Inspiration.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Theldrin is aghast to see the Illithid Husk devouring Avery's brain, but has a glimmer of hope as the knight somehow seems to resist for the moment. Unsure what to do and with no time to deliberate, he quickly grabs his Witch Bolt scroll from the side of his pack.
[[Just wanted to add, Coriana has repelling blast, so if that 17 hits, even though it is just one damage, it pushes the husk into the corner and off of Avery maybe?]]

(OOC: @drumdigby - I'm posting the actions for the different scenarios in the spoilers below so that you can resolve the action for the round...)
Option 1
Action: Cast a spell True Strike with Attack the Illithid Husk, Crossbow, Light (80/320): 22, Damage: 12 (piercing) + 2 (radiant) = 14 (total) Bonus Action: Grant bardic inspiration to Theldrin
Option 2
Bonus Action: Use Unsettling Words against the Illithid Husk. The Illithid Husk must subtract 7 from the next saving throw (for Hypnotic Pattern). Action: Cast spell (LVL 3 slot) Hypnotic Pattern with the AoE covering both the Illithid Husk and the Desiccator. That will also include Avery in the AoE. Each creature in the hypnotic pattern's AOE must roll a DC 17 WIS save. (Don't forget the -7 penalty on the Illithid Husk's saving throw.) On a failed save, the creature becomes charmed for the duration. While charmed by this spell, the creature is incapacitated and has a speed of 0. The spell ends for an affected creature if it takes any damage or if someone else uses an action to shake the creature out of its stupor. (Note that affected creatures do not get to reroll the saving throw each round.)
Option 3
Bonus Action: Use Unsettling Words against the Desiccator The Desiccator must subtract 6 from the next saving throw (for Dissonant Whispers). Action: Cast spell (upcast with LVL 2 slot) Dissonant Whispers on the Desiccator The Desiccator must make a DC 17 WIS save (but don't forget the -6 penalty from Unsettling Words) or take 8psychic damage and immediately use its reaction to move as far as its speed allows away from Xanrym. On a successful save: 4psychic damage and no forced movement.
The image you saw of Avery being devoured you quickly realize is a vestige of the Illithid's latent psionic power. While he isn't really dead, he is in trouble. Syllen is able to heal Coriana and get a shot off at the Husk, while Khessa's pike misses. Coriana sends bolts of energy at the Husk, effectively dropping it finally, freeing Avery. Xanrym is able to send whisper's into the Dessicator's mind, sending it fleeing back into the room beyond, where you see the stone floor slopes sharply to the east, where the walls glisten and water tinkles into a small pool. With Syllen's guidance, Theldrin is able to hit the Dessicator with Witch Bolt.
As Avery was released with the death of the Illithid Husk, he may take his turn now.
Khessa's Attack of Opportunity (in case the Dessicator did not Disengage as he went back into the room beyond): Pike Attack: 10 Damage: 7 (piercing) Bardic Inspiraton, if needed, adds 5 to the attack roll.
(OOC: @drumdigy - Since Avery had a 1d8 bardic inspiration die from Xanrym, I think that we should let @Aaggie roll a 1d8 to see whether it lets Avery pass his CON save before you finalize the result of the Illithid Husk's action.)
Oh absolutely. Let's wait to see if Avery wants to try and roll to save against having his brain eaten.
(OOC: @Aaggie - Do you want to roll a 1d8 from Xanrym's bardic inspiration to see whether Avery can avoid death-by-mind-flayer?
It seems like a no brainer to me. 😉
Sorry! I couldn't resist the "dad joke.")
(OOC: @drumdigby - while the Illithid Husk dodged the flames on Xanrym's turn, don't forget that it needs to make another DEX save since it ended its turn still in the bonfire's square.)

Husk DEX Save: 17
Turn 2:

Action: Cure Wounds level 2: Heal Coriana 31 HP
