This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Xanrym tries to persuade them that this is a poor course of action, "I admire your civic concern, but now is not the time. It is the time for sleep and rest. The men in this jail may be innocent, but they were put in jail for a reason. They will be judged according to the custom and laws of Orlane. If they are found to be innocent, then I imagine that they will be set free. But you must see that it is neither good nor lawful to set them free like this: by force, at night, under the cover of the darkness, and before anyone has heard the evidence of their unlawful deeds." Persuasion15
Liarin - Not sure, I feel like unless it says that specifically in the class description then probably not. Go ahead and make an Animal Handling check to see if you can intuit the squirrel’s wants.
Xanrym - The man is just about to turn away from your argument and back to the jail when he sees Avery in his armour and sword. His eyes widen as peasants often do when coming toe to toe with a real knight. “Look we don’t want to kill anyone, we just want a fair trial and for the town to have its constable back. This is the rule of law, you can’t keep all these men locked up.” He still seems very set in his determination. Although you do see a lot of people behind him stepping a little further back from Avery.

Xanrym glances back at Avery and buoyed by his intimidating presence. He tries to help Avery convince the villagers to disperse, "I assure you: we want the same thing! These men aren't being 'kept locked up.' Why -- they were only jailed this morning, not even one day ago. Be patient. Go home and lock your doors against the dangers of the dark night and come back in the morning. Give the mayor some time to explain what's going on and when the trials will take place. Have faith that justice will be done and that good order will restored to Orlane!"
Xanrym is trying to avoid any more bloodshed, but he's also trying to avoid revealing exactly what they know about the cult. He guesses that most of the people in this mob aren't actually cultists, but he's also not sure whether it's a good idea to tell them about the cult. He feels that they should leave that to Mayor Ormond, if possible. Xanrym doesn't want to turn neighbor against neighbor and make every Orlaner even more paranoid than they are already, especially not in the middle of a tense stand-off like this.
(OOC: let me know if you want another skill check from Xanrym here.)
Liarin - The squirrel begins beckoning you to the north going north. Gesturing towards the grove of elms in the north-west of town. Are you going to follow it?
Xanrym - I’ll let you roll another Persuasion check but the DC Is high, DC18
Theldrin - Oliver and Maajid were already watching from the inn window. Now Toska and Cirilli have come down to see as well. When Cirilli sees the man Xanrym is talking to, see visibly stiffens and eyes widen.
Liarin - The squirrel looks at you quizzically and then takes off back into the elms.
Xanrym - The man glares at you, “Faith? They talk of faith, these heathens that come into our town and kill our priestess.” He glares at you and turns back to Wraven and Lldryk, warning them to step out of the mobs way. Wraven doesn’t look like he’s going to do that. You get the feeling a few of these people don’t really want to fight Wraven, Lldryk, and the rest of you now. Especially seeing as how they don’t have them surrounded anymore. But this man seems to be spurring the whole thing on.
Avery shakes his head, and now rests his sword on his shoulder. "You are acting no better than those who were with the cult, the ones who truly corrupted your temple and murdered the members of it. We WILL see they have a fair trial, not one ran by a mob!"
As the situation gets more dicey, Xanrym takes a few steps backward so that he's still standing "beside" Avery but now a few farther away from the mob than Avery. That way, he can easily hide behind Avery if a fight breaks out. Since persuasion isn't working, Xanrym tries to provoke any of the cult's true believers into revealing themselves. Xanrym says loudly, talking past the man to the whole mob, "We only kill we must, in defense of our lives and of the innocent. Sadly, violence is sometimes necessary when evil rears its ugly head. I'm sorry to say that Misha had betrayed her vows to Merrika. She had joined a cult and worshipped the false god Explictica Defilus, a vain and vile creature that demands gold and blood sacrifices. A lowly monstrosity that grubs around in the dirt like a common snake but thinks herself a goddess. Ha!"
Xanrym scans the mob to see how many of the people look confused and frightened versus offended and angry. (Insight10)

(OOC: Hm...not getting a good read on these people in the dark. Let's hope that most of them are not cultists.)
Xanrym concludes, "Go home! If you stay here or break these men out of jail in the dark of night. In defiance of the law! Before you've even heard the evidence against them! Then know this....you ally yourself with an evil cult that has quietly infiltrated Orlane. A cult that has worked to corrupt the temple of Merrika! A cult that has already tortured and murdered other villagers and even acolytes of Merrika who would not join them. We have seen the evidence of the cult's crimes! A cult that fed those poor people -- your neighbors! -- to troglodtyes! Is that who you are? If you're good, lawful people, then disperse! Go home! Lock your doors and keep your family safe! Know that there is an evil cult at work in Orlane, and it's at work here -- tonight! -- right here in front of the jail. Do not ally yourself with this evil cult! Do not debase yourself to their false god, a vulgar and stupid snake monster."
Noticing Cirilli's reaction Theldrin moves quietly over near her and while Xanrym is speaking to the crowd, he leans over and whispers, "Do you recognize their leader, the bald man?"
Avery continues to shake his head, his shoulder sitting on his shoulder, his finger tapping the hilt. "Go home and sleep good townspeople, you'll have clearer heads to think straight."
Ok I haven’t dealt with what’s going on with the crowd recently. I’m going to rule that because of the mention of Explictica Defilus I’m going to let Xanrym roll another Persuasion check. It’s quite high DC 15 and if he fails it, these people are going to storm the guardhouse.

Avery plants his swords point down into the dirt, but glares at the crowd as a means of intimidation, backing Xanrym. (Intimidation: 24 (Nat 20)
Theldrin watches quietly, a concerned frown passing over his face as he keeps to the shadows of the porch.

(OOC: Close! I guess Xanrym should have just piled on Avery's intimidation and threatened the villagers with violence if they didn't disperse.)
