Xanrym creeps quietly up to the edge of the dark opening and looks in. He assumes that it's not just a sheer drop since there must be a way for the cultists to get down. Is it a sloping tunnel or is there a ladder or some other obvious way down? Can he see a room or chamber beyond? Are there any guards visible?
Xanrym creeps back from the "pit" and says, "It's as darker than night in the Dim Forest in there, but it looked like were some stairs leading down. I couldn't see any guards, but I also couldn't see the end of the stairs. We could use Theldrin's Light, or I could light my lantern, but like when we were under the Temple of Merikka, it'll ruin our chance of surprising anything ahead."
Xanrym will light his lantern unless the others want to try something else, but since the light ruins their chance at stealth, he would walk at the back of their marching order unless they want him to check the stairs for traps as they go.
"I'll have my staff in hand anyway," Theldrin says with a forced smile as he tries to look optimistic in preparation for the party's descent. "Easy enough for me to cast Light if you want to keep both hands free."
So the usual marching order with Avery in the front and Xanrym in the back? Your light source coming from Theldrin’s staff.
Yes, at least for now.
Xanrym will light his lantern, too. If nothing else, it's possible that they'll get separated or that they'll enter a room large enough that they'll want 2 lights to see better. If there's a fight, Xanrym can always set down the lantern to use his crossbow, and nearly all of his most useful spells for a fight require only verbal components.
Avery just keeps his balance as he descends the stairs. The rest of you slow your speed and watch your step as you descend into the pit. Assuming your not trying to be stealthy at all, your steps echo through the slimy earthen walls of the stairs leading down. You hear a raspy voice call up from below, it speaks in a serpentine tongue that none of you recognise. Does anyone speak Draconic?
(OOC: No. I just checked the character sheets, and no one speaks draconic.
In my last post, I was actually going to say that Xanrym would do a ritual casting of Comprehend Languages before we head down the stairs in case we ran into any monsters that we couldn't understand. Unfortunately, I decided not to say that because I thought that he'd need his concentration for Guidance, but I was just getting him confused with one of my other characters. 😳 Xanrym doesn't actually know Guidance and won't likely need his concentration for anything else for a while. It's up to you if you want to let me retroactively change that and have Xanrym concentrating on Comprehend Languages for the next hour.)
Sure, we can just say you ritually cast Comprehend Languages before heading into the lair. The voice you hear is a female voice speaking in Draconic, "Who's up there? You're supposed to announce yourself before coming in!"

Xanrym hisses a warning to the others when he hears the voice. He listens carefully, the spell rendering the words comprehensible to him. He wonders briefly whether it could be the naga. But he expects a guard of some sort. A guard who speaks draconic? He looks ahead at the others, his brow furrowed in concentration.
Xanrym spent many days on the road with Oliver, and its the cultist whose voice he probably knows the best. He replies, in his best imitation of Oliver's voice: "Sorry. I was in a hurry, and I slipped. It is Oliver. Oliver Ignamino, from Hookhill? I beg the forgiveness of the Queen of All Night, but I bring important news."Deception15

I should have said, he replies in Common. While Comprehend Languages helps Xanrym understand Draconic, it gives him no ability to speak it. He hopes that the cultists don't all speak draconic. Maybe they just learn enough to understand the naga and her lair's guards?
The others, of course, can understand what Xanrym says. He just makes an apologetic grimace and shrugs uncertainly. He doesn't know whether the party will pass as guards of Oliver and potential cultists or whether they'll be recognized immediately, but perhaps his lie will sow enough confusion that they can take the speaker below by surprise.
There's a pause before the woman responds in her raspy voice, now in common. "Oliver? Didn't we tell you to stay with that group, idiot? Get down here now and you can explain it to Jarvis... or maybe Garath." This last sentance is said with a fiendish glee, as though Gareth is someone you really don't want to have to explain things to.

Yes, Whisker's takes you to the edge of the pit and stops, shaking a little bit. This is still early morning.
By the way you can all mark off a Long Rest after your sleep.

Stealth 9

Theldrin stands 15 feet back from the opening, readying a Fire Bolt in case anything moves up out of it to attack Xanrym or the others.
(OOC: Heh. I guess it's pretty dark in there!)
Avery also prepares for action, sword drawn
All Xanrym sees in the hole is darkness, but he smells dampness, rot, and mould.
Maybe the hint of a few muddy wooden steps leading down.

Just as Avery steps onto the steps, he realises they’re very slippery with wet. Can Avery roll a Dexerity Saving Throw to try and avoid slipping.
Dex Save: 11
