When Dorn addresses her, Sabina replies, "Umm, I think you were headed out when I arrived at Calim's forge. So. no! Not formally introduced." She gives him a nod. "I'm Sabina Featherwound." She glances to his squire as well. "Good to meet you too Aria."
Then with Kneecap talking to her she focuses in on him, listening politely. When he halts the start of his joke to again ask for Noriberries she tells him, "I'm not totally sure they have those here. Maybe we should just listen to them, it could be interesting." In reality, she is relieved that this seems to be turning into a much more friendly conversation than when they were escorted from underground. She still felt that whole things was silly, but still, they could have still unjustly punished them!
The overseer, a bit confused by the banter and sharing, attempts to redirect the conversation— all the while, beckoning for the food to be brought in.— “all this is well and great Guildmaster Gentry but it is a concerning thought, that the noreanites are throwing themselves in with ghouls. What do you make of this?”
the guildmaster repostures: “we don’t yet understand their coordinated efforts. It’s likely that they must have a shared goal, although, for the time being that goal is blind to us.” Looking back at the party: “for those of you that don’t know, we here in Westhaven have been fending off the noreanite savages for decades, since the first period of construction began in west haven. These uncivilized nomadic humanoids have no love for us, and have tried time and time again to remove us from Norea. These cultists, as you call them, are Noreanites. They speak their own tongue. For reasons we don’t know, they’re working with ghouls, which we haven’t witnessed up until this point. In fact, we haven’t witnessed them interacting with any other species other than hunting. we have noticed a down-surge of noreanite activity recently— we just thought maybe after all this time, they were sending out the white flag and giving up; relocating. But apparently, they’re making moves underground and in secret. Tell me more about this door you found.”
Kneecap will answer "Its a solid stone double door, no handle. Two symbols on each door, a Rhombus, H shaped, X shaped and a sphere. Smaller carvings below the markings. That's about all we know, couldn't get da thing opened."
Sabina nods to Kneecap's words. "That pretty well describes it. It definitely is imbued with magic. But we've not figured out how to get it open." She pauses, studying the guildmaster. "Do the symbols mean anything to you?"
Volneer becomes uncomfortable with how much his companions are sharing. He keeps his mouth shut and has his hands under the table, ready to blast his way out of the room at the first sign of hostility.
Calim has been observing this entire exchange, noting when he is referenced and choosing to look blank and unfazed. He might be hanging around some strangers. But, at least so far, he could beg pardon under the pretense of being a patsy or dupe, hired as a guide. He is still suspicious of the tactics being used by the guard.
Although...a slight change of tactics might be useful. Sparingly, he decides to interject things like "to keep us all safe" and "for the sake of our home here" and "Westhaven before all others" when others are speaking. His hope is to garner a bit more affection from the Guildmaster without anyone construing his participation as an form of leadership.
Persuasion 6
He is not at all certain it is going well. But, he is keeping up the ruse...there might be a low threshold for flattery. There is nothing more important than playing 'one down' to these vainglorious cads.
“And you uncovered no indication about what might be behind it?” The overseer looks inquisitively, with a small sense of terror.
“our information points to several other underground temples. Several noreanite camps around Westhaven are gone, and we expect that they may be living underground, and like this instance— coordinating, or, teaching, the ghouls. Perhaps the ghouls have some power or leverage the Noreanites need. What we do know, is the ghouls are simply too unintelligent to organize any kind of plot against the safety of westhaven— but with the organization of noreanite leadership, they may be a considerable threat. You say there are four slots with the door? Perhaps there are four underground sites located around west haven. our top priority should be to find out what they’re planning, where that door leads to, and where those other sites are. What say you all?” Guildmaster will then toss guild badges to each of you, individually.
Sabina looks at the badge that was tossed to her. "Well! This would have been useful must earlier!" She then glances back to the overseer, "Though we wouldn't have gotten to meet you, sir. Turned out for the best in the end I think!" She picks up the badge and stows it away in a pouch. "Now, how do we find these other temples? You seem to know where these other noreanite camps were if they're empty. Seems like additional sites would be near these campsites?"
“I can mark the known locations of noreanite hot spots on a map. There hasn’t been any retaliation from the ghouls or noreanites today, so I plan on deploying a squadron of guild members out to one of the known sites to build a garrison. If you can clear a path for them, a caravan will follow your route with enough equipment and supplies to build a sturdy guard outpost. If we can successfully do that, the town guard can expand outward and keep it secure. While you’re there, you’ll be at the forefront of authority; feel free to explore as much as you like, and perhaps do some digging around and find one of those underground temples.”
”as for the pay—“ he looks over to the overseer— “it’s not much, but 5 gold a day would be your starting wages. If you’re hard pressed for money, perhaps looking into the lumber mill, the mines, or any of the crafts men and women around town who might need an extra hand.”
“you’ve already proven that you’re all very capable, if not headstrong… but just to be clear, this is a potentially dangerous mission. You’ll be on your own until the caravan arrives, and once they do arrive, their only orders are to establish the garrison. Any exploration at the site will be at your own risk. Do I make myself clear?”
“Oh, also, sorry Dwarf, the guild embodies the spirit of west haven. It was adventurers who founded this place in the new world, and it is adventurers the same who continue to labor to expand it. The adventurers guild— and myself— work in servitude of the elder council and overseer. While the guards defend the city, the guild explores beyond the walls and provides for the city.”
"That would be great if you could mark out locations for us," Sabina says. "Is there one you think more likely? Or will we just have to through them one by one?" She looks at the others. "Five gold a day and the chance to get out there and explore. It sounds good to me." She's hoping that they agree. It doesn't sound like the guildmaster is going to give any more. And she'd hate for them to not be allowed to go.
Kneecap picks up the guild badge, "OK, guild doesn't sound too bad, I'm in. 5 gp a day is OK, I'm assuming pay started yesterday right? Clearing those ghouls and all!"
"5 gp is fine, here's my issue. I have a... problem... with taking orders and being tied down, as my temper earlier has probably shown. As long as the parameters are loose, I'm good at what I do. I don't like to do much else. If this guild membership means I have to become a 'servant' or I'm not allowed to leave westhaven... I'd rather keep my freedom then get 5 gold a day."
Kneecap leans over to Volneer and whispers, at a volume that is just a slight bit higher then his 'normal' voice, "It's OK, they are asking us to leave the city and clear a path for the others. Then, get this... We can explore and do what we want until they get there! So they are paying us to do what you want, leave the city, and do some good. Or is that what I want? Hahahahahahah. I'm guessing its what we both want this time. It will be good. Tell them you want a title, like ... Expedition Captain? or, maybe just Captain? I won't budge until you get it."
He looks across the table at Dorn "You are a good fighter and trustworthy, both qualities that can be hard to find. If your back here giving us some guidance, I feel better." he says, finally taking a break from talking and looking around.
Then, he whispers to Dorn, in his 'whisper voice' "Are the Noriberries coming?"
The guildmasters eyes droop a little after Volneers words. “We would not make you leave westhaven for not wanting to be a part of the guild… however, ONLY the guild explores Norea. Citizens are only permitted to take the traveled roads from west haven back to our main port. And being a part of the guild means you’re subject to certain rules… living within a city— there’s always a certain amount of rules, even the overseer and I are held accountable to the elder council. As for where you first set off, I will leave it up to you to discuss. Just return to the guildhall tomorrow with your heading, and I will begin assembling a caravan.” Larkas will rise from the table, and look at you all before nodding to the overseer. “I believe we are done here for now… overseer.” And will begin to make his leave.
dorn listens in to kneecap, and smirks. Glances at Aria— “escudera.” As she smiles widely, and pulls a norriberry from her pack, and sneakily presents it to kneecap. “you can find me at the temple should you need me. Much work is needed there, and I expect that is where I belong for now.” Dorn will rise, and thank you all again for your friendship.
Sabina rises as Dorn does as that seems the proper thing to do. "Thank you very much Overseer, Guildmaster. I suppose we should make are preparations to leave in the morning." She glances at the others, "Should we meet before sunrise? At the tavern?"
After the Guildmaster leaves, Volneer leans back and smirks to himself. He's been exploring Norea for over a year, and he's met many other travelers. He's fairly certain the guildmaster is unaware of the Adventurer's pact, and is equally unaware of those exploring Norea at this very moment. He does have one request for the Guildmaster before he leaves, though. "Every group needs a leader. Unless any of my comrades object, I would like to become that leader, a Captain, if you will. Calim is a warrior, Kneecap keeps us alive, Sabina is our mage, and I can be a leader. I do a little bit of it all, though I am a mage, I also heal, and fight." He will accept it if someone disagrees, but he knows the group needs a leader. Turning to Dorn, he says, "Were you still with us, my friend, you would no doubt be our leader, but in your absence, I will do my best."
But drops it on the ground where it smashes a bit. Unphased, he picks it up and takes a bite. Without looking, he says to Volneer "Well Expedition Captain, where to?"
"What?" seeing Volneer's look, "It's seven goblins! It's funny, really. nothing inappropriate, I promise!"
When Dorn addresses her, Sabina replies, "Umm, I think you were headed out when I arrived at Calim's forge. So. no! Not formally introduced." She gives him a nod. "I'm Sabina Featherwound." She glances to his squire as well. "Good to meet you too Aria."
