"Them mice that ain't mice. They was supposed to be pets, for company," Danny says to Norstaer. "I don't get to talk much to the rest of the crew. " He beckons you to follow." Lemme show you," he says, his voice tinged with a bit of relief. Leading you below to the cargo hold, he stops before the doors that partition the main cargo area. "They're in there," he says, pointing a shaky finger at the door. Just as Danny is about to open it, there is a thud, "ow!"...crash "ooft"....bang "Aargh"....wallop "Damn"...from one of the stairs and you see one of the crew members lying in a heap at the bottom, having just fallen down it. There's a moment of silence, followed by some annoyed cursing.
“Captain Marrow, I truly mean no offense, nor do I wish to impose upon your privacy. I understand the sanctity of your quarters, and I apologize if my request seemed intrusive. My intentions are solely to assist Coralaine, whom I’ve grown quite fond of during our journey. I hope my inquiry hasn't overstepped. As a gesture of goodwill, and to alleviate any burden on Coralaine, I am willing to cover the cost of her passage. I could write you a promissory note with my Salvathor family seal. It is important to me that she does not suffer undue stress in her elder years. I hope this can also serve as a token of my respect towards your command and the operations of your ship.”
I finger my signet ring on the little finger of my left hand, as if absent mindedly. It's a brilliant silver that catches the light. The face of the ring bears the Salvathor family crest: a sword and shield wrapped in grapevines. Several small amethysts are set in the ring, serving as the grapes of the vine.
Zero groaned as he slowly stood up again. The plan of quietly finding out where these "mices" were hiding had just painfully failed.
"Er... hi?... Don't worry, I don't plan to snitch on you. You are cool... I guess?... Ok fine, I heard you all just now. I just wanted to see the size of the mices. It sounded interesting."
He decided to not even put effort in his try to save his reputation. He had just destroyed it with his entrance. But he was really only curious about those animals, they were definitely more interesting than his usual days on the ship, they could have intertained him for a while and he could't let the opportunity pass by. The time on the ship was becoming more boring every day, and he was just desperate to have something, anything, happen to change the boring routine. Yes, even mices.

The captain leans in to Lysander and growls quietly. "You arrogant young pup. I've sent prettier peacocks than you to swim with the fish. Be glad I don't throw you overboard right now. Get out of my sight and I don't want to see you again unless you're getting off this ship."
I'm taken aback by the vehemence in his tone. I understand some people don't like the wealthy, but I was offering to pay him. I think there's more to this. Leaving the captain, I think I might just have to explore his cabin while he is busy.
I say nothing more to the captain, recognizing that it may escalate things. I mumble as I go, just loud enough for him to hear, "I suppose I'll have to tell Coralaine I tried my best."
I motion Kythaela over to the stern so we can strategize how to get in undetected.
Norstaer quickly moves to the side of the injured crew member, assessing his condition. "Stay still, let's see where you're hurt," he says, ensuring the man is conscious and assessing for visible injuries. After stabilizing the crew member, Norstaer inspects the stairs for hazards that could have caused the fall. Then Norstaer turns back to Danny. "Lead on, Danny. Let's find out what's been causing such a stir" he says, following the cabin boy towards the cargo hold with alert senses. As they approach the cargo doors, Norstaer prepares for whatever awaits them.

With all eyes and attention pointing elsewhere, you quickly try the door only to find it locked.

Danny pushes the door open carefully, peering through it, then pushes it open further, motioning the three of you through quickly, before shutting it behind. The smell of old spices, aged liquors, and quite a bit of rat excrement affronts your nostrils as you enter this storage area at the bottom of the ship.
Two massive rats skitter between crates upon the ship. Rushing toward you, they appear emaciated, like they haven’t eaten in some time. Danny hangs at the back. "Please don't kill 'em. I've been trying to train 'em, but they're just so hungry." The two rats lunge forward hungrily.
Rizzo and Gonzo just rush you the instant you're through the door. One of the rats scampers forward to Snok, who is at the head of the group, jumping at the kobold frantically. Snok is able to easily avoid its snapping teeth, but the second is a little more accurate. It aims a bite at Snok's hand, taking a chunk out of his wrist. The two of them are jumping and squeaking frantically, not caring that they are vastly outnumbered.
Snok, in a panic, starts swinging aimlessly at the two rodents. He attempts to slash the rat in front of him, but his wound tenses up and his hand pulls back in pain. However, he manages to slash one of the rats in its shoulder with a backhand strike.
In the chaos of the cargo hold, Norstaer quickly readies his bow, eyeing the aggressive rat. With a calm breath, he pulls the string back, focusing intently as he aims at the creature. His stance steady, he prepares to launch the arrow, aiming to support Snok and neutralize the threat.

Norstaer's arrow is swift and true, sinking deep into the rat. The creature squeals in pain, then collapses, spilling blood onto the wooden floor of the cargo hold. There's a wail of anguish from behind, and Danny shouts, "Gonzo! What've ye done to Gonzo! I told ye not to kill 'em! I told ye, I told ye"' The halfling bursts into tears and flees the hold, crying hysterically.
Ignoring the fellow crewmate's cries, Zero quickly took out from his boots his shortsword with his left hand. There was time to deal with the halfling later, now he had to make sure to survive those things. He was glad the arrow took care of one of those, but considering Denny's reaction, Zero opted to try to keep the second thing alive.
"It would be too troublesome to explain all this to the captain" he thought.
So he quickly hit it on the head with the back of the shortsword, hearing a soft crack after the impact.
Hama had been listening to the chaos unfold. The smell of the giant rat's blood staining the wood was heavy in her nose. She couldn't hear or see from her hiding spot if the remaining giant rat, Rizzo, had been killed or not. Taking a soft but shaky breath, she moved along the edge of the boxes in an attempt to get a better look but hoping to remain hidden. Knowing how they reacted to two starving creatures, and not knowing how they'd react to a sudden starving human, she pulled a dagger from her belt and readied to defend herself if necessary.
Seeing the demise of its partner, the surviving rat, having taken quite a bit of damage itself, gives a squeak of fright, turns tail and runs. The scrabbling of its claws on the bare wood echoes through the hold as it scampers away, vanishing in amongst the piles of boxes in front of you.
Snok stares at the wounded rat lying on the floor, and arrow lodged in its soon to be carcass, "This one like little nibbler, pointy-ear help him get it alive?" He looks at Norstaer with a pleading gaze, almost like a puppy. If a puppy looked like a lizard with eyes that stared into your soul.
Norstaer crouches beside the injured rat, employing his ranger skills to tend to its wounds. He rips a portion of his clothing into strips for makeshift bandages. Carefully, he wraps the fabric around the rat to control the bleeding. Throughout the process, he softly speaks calming words to ease the animal’s distress.“We’ll try to save this one, Snok,” Norstaer assures gently.

Realizing we won't get in without a lockpick specialist, we decide to head below deck to see what the others are up to.

I’m going to try to roll for Nature to see if I can tell what kind of animal these might be: 8
:(
