Unseen by the wraith, Dunkin sneaks across the cavern and is the first living soul in five hundred years to lay eyes upon . . .
. . . The Forge of Spells
This large workshop, where the human mages of old Phandalin enchanted dwarven weapons and gnome gadgets, was badly damaged by an ancient spell battle that laid waste to the mine. Worktables taking up two corners of the room are scorched, and the plaster has been burned off the masonry walls. In the middle of the room, a stone pedestal holds a small brazier in which an eerie green flame dances and crackles. The brazier and its pedestal appear to have been untouched by the forces that destroyed this area.
OOC:
A successful DC 15 Intelligence (Arcana) check (Chase may make this check at advantage when he enters the room, if ever) lets you discover:
The brazier is a powerful source of the magic meant to enchant weapons or armor. Any nonmagical weapon or armor bathed in the green flame for at least 1 minute becomes a +1 weapon or +1 armor, respectively, for 1d12 hours. Alternatively, as an action, a character may bathe a single nonmagical weapon or armor, enchanting it for one minute. A longer ritual is required to enchant it permanently.
Taking a chance, Nyli steps forward and bows slightly to the wraith. "We have not been introduced. My name is Nyli. We are not here to plunder; my dwarven friend is interested in the history of this place, and those whose might powered it." She turns slightly, listening to the sounds of battle outside. Turning her attention back to the wraith she continues "I cannot unfortunately say the same of those outside."
Persuasion 8 (or 14 DM's call)
OOC: Well, it was a good idea until the dice rolled 🙄
"My might powers the forge!" Mormesk the Wraith hisses back at Nyli. Just when it looks like Mormesk's anger will explode into violence, Nyli's luck changes and Mormesk continues, "I can see why you would want to study it. You two may stay if you kill the intruders; my guards can hold them off no longer. But, take my treasure and you will die!" With that, Mormesk sinks through the floor again.
When Chase enters the Forge of Spells, he immediately recognizes it for what it is: a flame capable of creating the weapon of his destiny. However, the destruction and disarray which have affected the rest of the workshop lead Chase to the erroneous conclusion that the forge will need extensive repairs to bestow its magic on any more items.
A bright burst of flame briefly illuminates the west tunnel, followed by the screams of bugbears and the cracking of bones. A few seconds later, you can hear a command spoken by a male voice in Undercommon, and then the sound of two sets of footsteps approaching from the west.
OOC:
You have one round to prepare for whatever's coming.
I don't think any PC speaks Undercommon, but they can recognize it as the language of the drow.
Nyli looks at the other two "Stay behind me." She pulls out the scroll of fireball "I guess it's now or never."
Nyli will listen to the approaching footsteps. She will cast fireball when she judges them close enough, but before they can see her, whilst keeping her Chase and Dunkin out of the blast.
Fireball - 31 Fire damage (or half on dex save 12)
OOC: If this wouldn't work let me know and I'll do something else.
If Dunkin goes to the south building (SE of the number 13 on the map), he finds the following:
Dust, ash, walls blackened by fire, and heaps of debris beneath the sagging ceiling show that this room was damaged by a destructive blast. The furnishings—tables, chairs, bookshelves, beds—are charred or splintered, but otherwise well preserved. A scorched iron chest stands near the foot of one of the beds.
OOC:
It would take about 45 ft. of movement for Dunkin to get to the door of the south building. Dunkin has enough time to do that before the final enemies arrive, but he'd likely be 45 ft. away when the battle begins.
Also, enjoy a preview of the final enemies of the adventure! You've seen both of them before, and Mormesk is still around somewhere.
Map:
This map shows where I would place the fireball if I were Nyli. I also moved Chase outside the Forge of Spells in anticipation of the battle, but if that wasn't right he can be back inside.
Nyli casts fireball just before the two figures come into view. She then moves a few feet south and prepares her bow. (just behind Dunkin's current position.)
Fireball - 31 Fire damage (or half on dex save 12)
The forge is exactly what is needed. Finally his purpose can be fully realized. There are however some drow- slag which must be removed. Nyli’s fireball explodes. Chase watches to see if there is anything that survived.
Seeing Nyli tense with concentration Dunkin decides it would be better to fight and then investigate. Dunkin readies Ice Knife. He will cast it once Nyli’s fireball dissipates aiming for the second creature through the doorway and then will the draw his sling.
OOC:
Ice Knife = 11 (miss), no piercing damage
Exploding shards = 5 cold damage for beings within 5-ft
Our heroes wait for their enemies to pass through the tunnel. Before long, two dark elves appear.
The first is a woman, the woman who conspired with the Redbrand Gang, and the one whom Nyli shot through the chest with an arrow. She appears to have recovered, and now clutches a black staff with a carved spider at the top.
The second is a male dark elf dressed in black leather armor and robes, and carries spidery staff matching his partner's. You have seen him before, too, fleeing the Cragmaw Castle in Neverwinter Woods during your raid. He frowns as he sees you.
Both drow appear to have escaped any harm while fighting the undead, though no more bugbears are with them. As soon as they appear in the passageway, however, Nyli's scroll burns up, sending a glowing ember towards them, which explodes into flames. The two elves, who apparently did not expect to find any more enemies, fail to avoid the fireball. The male dark elf is partially shielded by his companion, however. Dunkin's ice knife follows, but it goes high and shatters against the tunnel wall. Razor sharp icicles fall and strike the male dark elf, who cries out in pain.
The drow do not die. Instead, the male drow casts a spell with his staff, spraying spider webs all over the starry cavern. They cover the entire area around you. The female drow charges at you, somehow unimpeded by the spider webs, and swings her staff at Chase, but Chase is ready. She misses her first swing and Chase's armor totally absorbs the second.
OOC:
@H20_Keeper, Dunkin was invisible, so his ice knife attack roll should have been at advantage. You can do the advantage roll now if you want.
Y'all are up as soon as you make the dex saves! Unless I counted wrong, there should be 5 rounds of Heroism left after
Monsters:
Nezznar the Black Spider 20/40 HP: Cast Web --> Nyli, Dunkin, and Chase must each make a DC 15 Dex save or become restrained. If restrained, you can use an action to make a Strength check (DC 15) to escape.
AC 14; Saves -1 | +1 | +0 | +5 | +4 | +1
Dex save vs Fireball: pass
Des save vs Ice Knife: fail
Concentration: Web
Vyerith the Black Spider (Black Spider B) 25 16/56 HP: Attack (Spider Staff) Chase --> miss on both
Last time, I used a cult fanatic stat block for her, but not now.
AC 14; Saves +0 | +4 | +2 | +0 | +1 | +2
Dex save vs Fireball: fail
Dex save vs Ice Knife: pass
Map:
The white square is the Web spell. It is difficult terrain and lightly obscures the area. It does not extend into the Forge of Spells
Dunkin smiles with satisfaction as his original spell adds insult to injury for the drow. However, his happiness is short lived as a sticky web soon envelopes him (DEX save=5/fail; STR save=13/fail).
OOC:
Ice Knife for Dunkin from last turn with advantage hits (22 for 9 damage to the second elf).
Dunkin continues to struggle with the web. He attempts to cast Starry Wisp but fails, unable to make the right gestures with so much webbing around him.
Nyli manages to avoid the webbing. She launches an arrow at Vyerith , before falling back a few feet, out of the webs. The arrow strikes home, not a fatal blow but it leaves the drow in a bad way.
Shortbow to hit 14 Damage 11 (7+4)
Vyerith 5/56.
OOC: After launching the fireball Nyli had taken a few steps back (behind Dunkin). She is now just out of the web at the top of the stairs.
While our heroes struggle in the webs, the Black Spiders continue their attack. Vyerith swings her spider staff at Chase again and again. Her first swipe gets her staff tangled in webs, but the second makes contact, barely. Chase can feel a small amount of poison injected from the staff into the wound, but he's probably had worse bug bites in his time. Vyerith then walks up the cavern wall, defying the laws of physics as she now stands parallel to the ground. She looks over to Nyli, whose arrow still pierces her side, with an almost animalistic snarl on her face.
The moment Vyerith moves, Chase can see three bolts of magical energy flying straight at him. They weave through the web's threads and strike him. Their source, Nezznar the Black Spider, ducks behind the wall of the Forge of Spells.
Near the main entrance to the forge, Dunkin suddenly feels a chill. He hears cackling of Mormesk the Wraith, floating just inside the door to the Forge. It says, "Remember when I promised to let you live? I lied." A spectral hand reaches through the webs at the entangled halfling, but it falls just short—The wraith seems to be avoiding entering the magical webbing.
OOC:
Chase must make four DC 10 Con saves or lose concentration on Heroism
Vyerith the Black Spider (Black Spider B) 5/56 HP: Attack (Spider Staff) Chase --> miss; hit for 1 bludgeoning damage and 3 (halved to 1) poison damage
Reacting to the faint chill of the wraith’s near miss, Dunkin moves away from the door and then instinctively casts Starry Wisp. As he recites the cantrip he thinks, “I wonder if that thing is somehow tied to the building? Better keep my distance.” As the spell is cast the wraith begins to glow dimly.
OOC:
Cast Starry Wisp=19 to hit, 1 damage. Ugh!! Move two squares South towards Nyli
Chase made all four saves holding onto his concentration for heroism, he then tries to free himself from the webbing, managing only to become more caked by the strong sticky strands.
