Eithne pins her badge back, nodding her thanks. As the guards answer (or choose not to answer) Jessa, she looks around, hoping to spot even a few non-military citizens.
The Savage Wanderer is curious to get a sense of what kind of people would feel comfortable living in a city that seems constantly ready for war... and that has a connection to a hellish dimension at its heart!
The guards gesture off down the street, "Follow the road in, you'll get there eventually, but they won't let slates like you close to the gate. Now move along."They turn their attention to a few more people coming toward the front gates. As you look now down the road, you don't see an immediate way in, but the road between the tall walls runs around the city, a design obvious to make it harder for incoming armies to penetrate. The city rises up before toward the pinnacle in the very center, but down here the streets are dusty and busy with soldiers and staff staying busy. You don't see many other slates here, and no one is without a badge that you can see. You definitely get the sense that this is not a tourist destination and the people who live here, live for war.
When you begin heading further in, it ends up being about a mile long walk around the city and down a massive iron staircase buried beneath the hill. More guards stand here, preventing people from getting close to the gate and quickly close ranks as you all approach.
Rogferr gladly takes the badge and puts it on. As the group continues he contemplates what a weapon of interplanar destruction is. After a moment he dismisses his curiosity hoping to never discover such a weapon. As the party walks away from the entrance attempts to remember if he had ever heard of a place called Acheron. (History Check: 7)
“It seems like we will need to find the right person if we wish to be able to get close to the portal.”
(OOC: During the walk could Rogferr figure out the different types of badges and what rank each of them represent?)

Not sure what Acheron is except one of the other planes like Mechanus. For the badges, make an Intelligence check! :)
Eithne, meanwhile, ponders how the party will gain permission to approach and let the mimir do... whatever it does when it's near one of those portals.
'I just hope they don't force us to go on a mission to Acheron...' the Lone Survivor thinks. 'Don't you dare do anything like that, Eithne!' the Voices in her head rise up, with painful intensity. 'This place is hellish enough without having to look for something even more so!' 'We don't want to go to hell, Eithne!' 'Yes, indeed, your head, while a little crowded, is certainly much better!'
Trying to calm her inner turmoil, the Savage Wanderer takes a pomegranate from her pocket and begins to eat it slowly and methodically, opening it and placing the seeds into her mouth one at a time, breaking them apart with her teeth and concentrating on savoring the decidedly tart juice.
The guards were referring to the portal gate (since you did pass through the city gate already). Slates are allowed most places except for some of the higher ranking inner chambers.
(Just think of Rigus as a giant military base pretty much. Just one, you know, with a stargate portal to Acheron underneath it. You all are visitors on base, but it is a place where people live too, if you want to call it that. OOCly, if you wanted to know what's going on at a military base, what would you do? :) )
Eithne summarizes: "OK, we've gained access to the city, but we don't yet have access to the portal we need. Shall we go there and ask the portal guards who we should speak to for permission to approach?"
"I doubt we'll be granted permission out of sheer goodwill..." the Savage Wanderer adds, "But perhaps the officer we'll consult has some problem his military can't solve—and we can."
Jesa nods. "I don't see any other way to start than by asking." She will head towards the guards and the gate. Once they are within easy talking distance she stops. "Perhaps you can help us. We really need to get our mimir to the portal gate. Not to go through it, we just need for it to kind of recalibrate. Just see the gate and we'll be on our way out of your hair!"
"I'm sorry, the gate is off-limits to slates. Without proper authorization we cannot allow you to pass." The guards affirm their stance but do not appear threatening yet, merely enforcing the boundary currently set.
"Of course, we want to strictly follow the procedures" Eithne forces herself to say. "Could you tell us who has the authority to grant us said 'proper authorization'? Perhaps we can make ourselves useful and get it as a reward".
'Actually, we don't want that, Eithne...' the Voices in her head correct her. 'We'd prefer this city to give more space to individual freedom...' '...For example, by allowing us to do what we have to do, since it doesn't harm anyone!' 'Yeah...' the Lone Survivor mentally admits. 'But the truth isn't always the best thing to say.'
Jesa nods, sounding very accepting of the guards' words. "Of course. We would not want to go anywhere without authorization. Perhaps though, is there someone we could speak to about getting authorization?" While she talks, she looks about trying to get an idea of the layout of the place. What sorts of barriers are there between where they are at and the location of the portal? Or can she tell. (Perception: 11)
The guards eye you all again for a long minute before answering. "That would be Major Kalar. You can find her command tent down that way." One of the knight-guards gestures back a ways to a wider area with numerous tents pitched of various colors and sizes. "It's a white tent near the center of that camp. Stay toward the middle of things and you should find it eventually."
Jessa can see the iron gate wraps around the portal completely, leaving little possibility of slipping away to the portal undetected. There are more guards that patrol the area, though at a glance they don't appear to be watching the party closely.
Jesa thanks the guards as well and starts to move in the direction they indicated. "So, a white tent. Major Kalar. Finding her should be easy enough. Convincing her to let us in to the gate, who knows if that's going to work out."
As everyone starts approaching the tent, Esta remains on edge. This whole place feels like it could break out into battle at any moment, things could go wrong very fast. "I don't like it here, I feel like eyes are always on me. I am going to guess here we will be asked to do something in return for permission - like the last town..."
Esta will ensure her clothes are loose, free to move quickly if necessary, before walking through the tented area towards the white tent.
Faith also pins on the badge as instructed, then waits to see if they answer Jessa.

Before leaving, Jesa asks an additional question. "They won't let us near the gate to the city? Or do you mean closer to the portal gate to Acheron?"
She then also adds, "Where will they let slates go?"
