Vira's eyes widen as she peers down at the big creatures. She tries to remember if she's ever heard of such large and aggressive wolf-like beasts before.
Nature: 12
"Do you think they'll give up if we just wait?"She looks towards the others, hesitant to charge into battle for once.
B'Reh grips her spear, her wings twitching with tension as she watches the creatures pace below, their hulking forms nearly lost in the shadows. The deafening howl reverberates through her chest, setting her feathers on edge. "I don't think they'll leave on their own," she murmurs, voice steady despite the unease curling in her stomach. "If we don't put them to rest or drive them away, they'll linger—and we won't get any sleep, not like this." She glances toward the others, weighing the risk. "I could try to draw them off, fly low enough to catch their attention, then lose them in the trees before circling back. But if they're hunting us, they might just return to the scent." Her grip tightens on her weapon. "Either way, I don't see this night ending in peace unless we act."
Sherwin attempts to communicate with the wolves, casting Speak with animals and shouting (barking?) down "What are you after? If you are seeking food, we can assist without bloodshed. If you are after the thrill of the hunt, I am sorry to say that you will be the ones fertilising the earth at the end of any combat that might occur."
Sherwin's magic takes root in his mind, granting understanding, and many of the yips and growls below turn into overlapping words from the three giant wolves.
"Food!""Food!""Meat!""So hungry...""Food in the tree!" "Hunt the meat!"
As Sherwin calls down to them, trying to propose a peaceful alternative or scare them off, the others hear the barks and growls subside for a moment. The wolf standing with its paws against the tree lets out a few short barks, which Sherwin hears as"Yes! Hunt! Combat! Come down so we can eat!"The others quickly resume their growls of "Fooood! Meat!""Hunt and tear and eat!" "Come down for food!" "Combat!"It seems that the wolves will not be easily persuaded or intimidated into leaving, but they don't seem to be making any efforts to climb the magically grown tree that holds your nest for the moment.
[[ Just as a note for B'Reh, I believe you still technically descend at a rate of 60 ft. per round when gliding. You do get up to your movement speed in glide distance (and I think an optional dash for you with your starting feat?), but if you aren't able to land on something with that movement then it's at a fairly steep angle downward. ]]
“They’re not backing down,” Vira murmurs, shifting her stance. “But they’re not climbing either. We have the advantage up here.” She glances at the others. “We could try picking them off from range. If we drop one, the others might retreat.” Her golden eyes flick to Sherwin and b'Reh. “Or do you have something that can spook them for good? I’d rather not go down there unless we have to.”She draws her shortbow, ready to act if the wolves grow bolder.
Sherwin has a plan. "Does anyone have any meat they can spare? The wolves are hungry and want meat. One of my berries is enough to satisfy any creature for a whole day, however I don't think we can get the wolves to eat it unless it's hidden in some meat. It is the best shot at a peaceful resolution"
B'Reh exhales slowly, relieved that Sherwin has found a possible solution. She had already resigned herself to the necessity of bloodshed, but if they could resolve this without needless killing, all the better. Kneeling, she quickly rummages through her pack, pulling out her rations. Most of it is dried grains and fruit, but after a moment, she finds a few portion of cured meat. It isn't much, but might it be enough if taken from several rations and bundled together?
Vira nods at Sherwin's suggestion, reaching into her pack and pulling out what little dried meat she has left from her rations. "It’s worth a try," she says, adding her portion to B'Reh’s pile. "Better to resolve this without a fight if we can."
Sherwin will add some of his own meat to the pile, as well as offering a berry to anyone who might have a different way to get it into a wolves' mouth (like Aric throwing)
Sherwin carefully tosses a wrapped jerky-berry down to the wolves, who stop their barking and howling to sniff at it for a moment, growling to each other as they investigate it.
"Meat?""Meat!""Dry meat, not fresh.""But meat!!""Hmm...fruit." "Fruit?" "No, meat!""No...berry. Berry.""Berry?" "Fruit. Not meat."
Sherwin and the two strig can see as one of the wolves noses at the lump of jerky until it reveals the berry nestled at the center. They return to circling the base of the tree, barking and growling once more.
Vira exhales sharply, watching as the wolves reject the bait. So much for the easy way out. She grips her greataxe tighter, then glances toward B'Reh. "Looks like a fight it is," she mutters, steeling herself. Then, after a brief pause, she asks, "Can you glide far enough to lure them away from the perch? If we can get them to chase you for just a moment, the rest of us can climb down and get into position before they realize what’s happening."
B'Reh watches the wolves circle hungrily below, their snapping jaws eager for the fresh kill they crave. She exhales through her beak, gripping her spear tightly as she calculates her approach and searches a suitable branch for her to finish her maneuver some 30 to 35 feet high and not more than 15 to 20 feet away. "I'll try to draw them away," she says lowly, glancing at Vira. "But let me try something else first."
Murmuring a quiet prayer to the Great Rhythm, she calls upon its protection, a faint shimmer of divine energy settling around her as she invokes Sanctuary(requires DC 13 WIS save to initiate an attack on her). Then, without another word, she steps to the edge of the nest and dives.
The wind rushes past her as she plummets toward the snarling beasts, her feathers rippling from the force of her descent. At the last moment (about 5 feet away from a wolf - assuming it stretches up it might be about 20 to 25 feet?), she flares her wings, shifting her momentum into a controlled glide (Reaction: Glide). When one of the wolves snaps upward, teeth gleaming in the moonlight, she hurls the enchanted berry straight toward its gaping maw with a sharp flick of her wrist (attack action?).
Whether the wolf takes the bait or lunges for her instead remains to be seen. With a powerful beat of her wings (Feat: Aerial Expert), she angles 10 feet upward, aiming for the sturdy branch on the far side of the clearing that she had single out earlier.
As B'Reh launches herself from the nest, spreading her arms to let the wind catch her feathers and slow her fall, the wolf standing up against the tree lets out a loud bark and pushes off to follow her. She lands at a similar height in a tree across the clearing, now with one wolf in pursuit as the other two continue circling the magical tree in the center of the clearing, where Sherwin can hear them continuing to call for their dinner to come down.
[[ I'll go ahead and say this is a situation that calls for initiative. If anyone has things they would've set up as B'Reh kicked off (rage, other spells like sanctuary, etc.) you can consider those active as of "Round 0", and then we'll pick up with you all in Round 1 for things like attacks. Also cyreon if you would've glided in a different direction just let me know! ]]
Round 1
[[ Got a new nest, still working on blending out the edges a bit ;). Players' turn. ]]
He then shouts (barks?) down at the wolves. "You should have eaten the berries. One of those berries would have filled you up until tomorrow night. Now I might be unable to prevent my companions from killing you. But at least you won't ever be hungry again...."
Vira steps over to the edge and peers down at wolf (red) for a moment before sighing and dropping her greataxe down towards it. She then takes out her spear, spreads her arms and jumps down into a glide, attempting to land in a tree to the south much like B'Reh did.
Bonus Action: extend rage
Reaction: glide
Ready action: spear attack on any enemy that gets in range. to hit 16 damage 11 and sap
At this point, Sherwin realises he has basically no options for range greater than 30ft. "I don't really want to get too close to those wolves, but other than making it rain in a 30ft cube, I don't really have anything else to aid the situation. And if I do that I won't have enough strength left to heal anyone until we have rested."
