'I really need to improve my aim...' the blonde arcane warrior thinks, as the fire projectile passes harmlessly beside the target. She unsheaths her imposing Greatsword, preparing for melee with the fierce Twig Blight, who in fact reaches her (but it needs to Dash, so it does not attack this round).
The Aasimar and the Tiefling try to eliminate him promptly. This time, the two do not retreat, so as not to distance themselves too much from the tall adventuress.
Then the surviving Twig Blight also reach Khessa (but they needs to Dash, so they do not attack this round)...
'Hold on, big girl...' Diabolical mentally encourages her friend 'We'll get rid of them soon!'
Rapha'ellya and Diabolical's reaction is incredibly effective this time and while a Twig Blight dries up at the deadly sound evoked by the Aasimar, another collapses pierced in an evidently deadly point by a bolt from the small but precise hand crossbow of the Tiefling.
Khessa finds herself facing only one opponent now... "What's the matter?" she taunts him "Are you suddenly feeling lonely? Don't worry, you'll reach your friends soon!" and she unleashes a powerful horizontal slash with the heavy blade of her Greatsword!
The 'Triple trouble' has achieved a flawless victory!
Khessa, thrilled by the victory - and even more so by the fact that her improvised fire and move back tactic has proven so effective - congratulates her two friends, patting them enthusiastically on the shoulder or back.
As always happens when victory costs her the harvest of lives, however, Rapha'ellya is instead saddened and, after thanking the blonde arcane warrior with a tight smile, recites a short oration in Celestial on each of the bodies. The other two do not know that language, but they have already asked the Aasimar for explanations so many times that they know the meaning of those words by heart: "May you find in eternity that peace that you did not want or could not find in life".
"They were just plants..." Diabolical rolls her solid-black eyes, speaking more to herself, in fact, than to the emissary of the Upper Planes "You might as well pray on the salad after picking it from the field..." and she heads towards the point from which the monsters came, both to make sure there are no more lurking, and because she thinks she has spotted something...
"Hey! Look what they had piled up here, these 'poor bushes'..." the red-haired rogue exclaims, showing the others a handful of coins "Maybe they had not found peace... but riches they found indeed! They must have slaughtered and robbed several passers-by".
The 'Triple trouble' divides the 37gp and 5sp found and continues.
Khessa, happy to see Diabolical smile as she pockets her share of coins, suggests: "Do you feel like scouting ahead again? It's a tactic that has worked well..."
And so, here are the three heroines back on the adventure, with the tiefling rogue who, aided by the prayers of the Aasimar cleric, scouts a little ahead of the other two...
The Fouled Stream - Bullywug Warriors (Encounter 2)
Up ahead is a cave opening and Diabolical approaches perfectly camouflaged, more like an Invisible Stalker than a simple rogue. The air grows damp and thick as she steps into the cave, her footsteps silent as if they were those of a ghost. The faint sound of water trickling fills the stillness, mingling with an unsettling smell of rot and mildew. The stream the party has been following is fed by a trickle coming from the cavern, its once-clear water now murky and covered with patches of sickly green and black slime. Around the tiefling, strange fungi cling to the walls, casting an eerie glow in shades of blue and green. The air is filled with tiny spores, swirling like dust motes in your torchlight. The whole cave feels wrong, as though the very earth itself has been twisted by some dark, unnatural force.
The red-headed rogue quickly backtracks, stopping her two companions and informing them of what lies ahead.
"They're four frogmen, huh? With strange fungi growing on their skin..." Khessa ponders the information brought by the skilled scout (the which did not recognize the Shrieker - and therefore only reported the Bullywugs) "It must be an effect of the contamination that we must eradicate. However... none of them on guard... is suspicious... Is it possible that they feel so safe?"
"Perhaps the killer bushes from earlier have made the visits a rare occurrence" Diabolical speculates, "giving them an exaggerated sense of safety. I looked around for a while, even slightly changing my observation point, but I didn't noticed others of them."
"And you estimate the mouth of the cave to be 15' wide" the blonde arcane warrior continues. "Too wide to be an effective choke point... And the fact that they are frogmen makes me think they are agile. This time we will not be able to apply the same tactics as before. However, they are not in great numerical superiority. Arriving unseen and by attacking first, we could take one down before they even know what hit them - after which we'd be three against three... All you have to do is keep one of them busy, Rapha'ellya, without risking anything, just making sure to avoid its blows. . Diabolical and I will eliminate the other two, then we will help you."
"Of the three of us, you are the one with the tactical mind, Khessa..." the Aasimar smiles benevolently at the blonde arcane warrior "We will try as you say. Also, I will try to help all of us strike more effectively, so that you may prevail before these enemies can organize an effective resistance. I am not thrilled, preparing new kills... but the signs of contamination are evident in them".
And so, the Blessed 'Triple trouble' advances... prepares to storm the cave... when, all of a sudden a large mushroom begins to emit an ear piercing shriek.
The Fouled Stream - Bullywug Warriors (Encounter 2)
Order (DM decides ties - I am the DM now, so I decide Rapha'ellya acts before Bullywug 4): Bullywug 1: 21 Bullywug 2: 20 Diabolical: 18 Bullywug 3: 16 Rapha'ellya: 4 Bullywug 4: 4 Khessa: 2
Round 1
The 'Triple trouble' is startled by the sudden, annoying noise, and the two quickest bullywugs take advantage of it! They leap with agility onto the party, trying to stab them with their spears... and bite them with their crushing mouth.
(Assuming that Bullywug 1 and Bullywug 2 can reach everybody, so deciding randomly who they attack)
Evidently attracted by the 'big target', the two skilled Bullywug warriors focus on Khessa, attacking her simultaneously from two directions and putting her in serious difficulty! It is only pure instinct that saves our heroine, allowing her to activate an emergency spell that [spell]Shield;blocks almost all attacks, deflecting them with an invisible but unbreakable force field[spell]. A single bite lands, leaving a bruise under the chainmail.
Diabolical takes advantage of this to retreat and gain space, knowing full well that she would have no escape, if subjected to an onslaught like the one that almost felled the blonde arcane warrior! From a safe distance, she takes aim and shoots one of the two Bullywugs in melee with Khessa (Bullywug 1).
This time, however, the party is ready to react, and the Aasimar easily blocks both attacks with her shield. She then maneuvers to get close to all three enemies and intones a mystical word of power as she raises her right hand to the holy symbol. Her voice has barely faded, when burning radiance erupts from her in a 5-foot Emanation, engulfing the Bullywugs.
The last Bullywug has been waiting for the right moment and thinks it has found it. The Aasimar cleric, pleased with her spell, seems distracted. The monster leaps...
(Having Bullywug 4 attack Rapha'ellya, since she already caused harm and Khessa has already Bullywug 1 and Bullywug 2 taking care of her...)
