As the last of the portal’s magic sputtered and folded in on itself, shadows burst out—cultists, cloaked figures spilling into the graveyard like startled vermin. One didn't make it, cut off mid-transit in a gruesome flash as the portal sealed shut behind him.
The rest bolted.
Sera narrowed her eyes.
“Oh no you will not. Your foul defiling and corruption ends now!”
She launched forward, charging after them, armor clinking softly with each determined stride. As she ran, she called out words of divine command, her fingers shaping holy sigils in the air.
With a burst of radiant energy, a shimmering sword of divine force sprang into existence midair—her Spiritual Weapon—hovering above the fleeing cultists. It lunged downward in a swift arc, slashing toward their backs like a celestial executioner, cutting off their escape.
( Sera move after then. Dash if she must. Summon spirit weapon to block their escape and hit at one)
Soon as the group emerges from the collapsing portal, Merkas casts Colour spray (15’ cone originating from Merkas who was next to the tombstone) con save 14 or they are blinded) in startled reaction to their sudden appearance “Hey, I knew someone was in there” (18 perception to recognize any of these characters, the half guy as well) “Don’t go running off you got some things to answer for!” The kender gives chase to stay with the four.
Pointing back toward Kasi’ casts message “Nah, I think I found who I was looking for, you get some rest and don’t bother Dana about it, she works so hard already”
At the words, Sharn jumped off from his cover. He focused and pushed himself off the gravestone he had taken cover behind. They may have gotten a head start, but they were carrying one cultist against their will. Yet Sharn was focused and impulsed by the dwarven arts, his momentum nigh unstoppable. He would try to make it ahead of them and block off their retreat.
(Spending a bonus action to move and dash to get ahead of them. Should be 70 feet of movement. If necessary Sharn can use his action to dash again.)
"Stop, drop to the floor and surrender now! You may be outmatched, but you don't need to be outlived." (Rolled a 12 on intimidation, if allowed to.)
Two of the cult members manage to cover their eyes as the blinding flash of the Color Spray hits them. The other two stumble and curse as they try to rub the temporary blindness from their eyes.
And as they clumsily try to escape, Cult Member White runs into the Spirit Weapon and hisses in pain as it slices into his arm, singing and tearing his cloak.
Undaunted by Sharn's threats, they seek a new escape route!
cheapjoke123 you're allowed to Intimidate one target on your turn. The cult member just rolled higher. Everyone, please roll Initiative. This battle map is huge, and there's a lot of terrain to work with. I cropped it so it wouldn't be overwhelming. Don't forget that Cover and Concealment exists, and the graveyard itself may have magical properties and faded wards that, if you make yourself aware of them, could be used to your advantage. The cult members already know the area, and have some idea of how to gain blessings and protections.
At the Laughing Dwarf...
Ororana looks at Hastos expectantly. "You know, if you want, I could give you a consolation prize too. It's a little sweeter than a chocolate egg." She says with a lurid wink. "This party's winding down, but I'm not done having fun. Are you?"
Cult Member White draws a sigil in the air with a thick, calloused finger. "Sargonnas, smite my enemy with your Sacred Flame!" Crackling black and red radiance flies from his hand and erupts onto Sharn! He doesn't stick around to see if Sharn dodges though, as he dashes off to the southwest!
cheapjoke123 Sharn has been attacked with Sacred Flame. Please roll a Dex Save (DC 11) to avoid taking 7 damage. Larskolstad Sera is up.
The battle in the graveyard turned fierce. Sera’s eyes snapped to a cultist chanting dark incantations—a surge of fire burst forth toward Sharn, but to Sera’s relief, he dove clear just in time.
Sera didn’t hesitate. She darted forward, her blade crackling with divine energy, boots crunching on dry earth as she closed the gap. With a whispered prayer, her spiritual weapon—a gleaming, translucent sword—floated at the cultist’s back, hovering like a silent executioner. (Sera moves to the red cultist from east and spiritual weapon from the west to flank him and attacks with advantage. Think he is blinded anyway but...)
The man, his senses scattered by Merkas’s spell, barely registered the danger before it was on him.
He stumbled blindly, caught between two threats. As he turned instinctively away from the glittering spirit blade, Sera struck—her blade slicing across his ribs, steel biting into cloth and flesh. (hits ac 22 for 6 radiant damage )
The cultist shrieked and turned to face her, but it was already too late. The spiritual weapon surged forward, carving a fresh line across his back, forcing him to his knees. ( also hits ac 22 for 7 more damage )
“Your time as a festering infection in Santech is over!” Sera roared, voice sharp with righteous fury. Her glare burned with the light of Paladine himself. There was no mercy in her stance—only justice and the holy wrath of a knight pushed too far.
Hastos can’t help but give Ororana a looking over. “Wow, that would be…. really something.” He chuckled nervously. Scanning the room he notices that no one’s come back to the dwarf. A look of concern crosses his face. “I think something bad might be going on at the cemetery right now.” He says to Ororana.
“I think I’m going to slip into something more comfortable and head over there. You’re welcome to meet me there if you’re interested - you know, in a little fun.” Hastos doesn’t waste time waiting for a response. He just throws her a wink and rushes over to Glynnis and whispers in her ear, telling her the situation and that he needs to leave immediately.
Hastos then bounds to his room, throws on his armor and heads out the back, running towards to the cemetery, buckling the remaining straps and securing his axe to his back.
Blinded and assayled from two sides, Cult Member Red takes two brutal attacks, one to the chest and one to the back. The wounds his and burn, but he seems to be able to withstand the punishment. He crouches low and grimaces, but his eyes flash with wrathful intent. "Your false god cowers while our people suffer and die! Sargonnas has given us the strength to fight! You're a fool, and your self-righteous arrogance has hindered us from attaining a powerful gift that would tip the scales in our favor! May your heathen tongue rot in your mouth that you may never speak such blasphemy again!"
Cult Member Red receives 13 Radiant Damage. cheapjoke123 Sharn is up. Cult Member Red is Blinded until the end of Merkas's turn. Cult Member Blue is Blinded until the end of Merkas's turn.
At the Laughing Dwarf...
"I'll take that action!" Ororana replies with an excited gleam in her eye, ever eager for a thrill...
Glynnis nods, and heads to Verhanna, where they discuss the safety of the townsfold. Verhanna's eyebrow raises at the news. She heads over to the band and pays them extra to play a few more songs. Then she announces to the party, "Before you head back to your homes and shelters, Let us all join in a traditional dance of community, followed by a toast. The council will cover around of drinks for everyone who wishes to join in!" The crowd seems a bit tired from the dancing, but the cheer at the offer of a free drink and join in the dance.
Ororana catches up to you with her leathers on and her axe in hand. Her hair is still made up in decorative braids, an odd contrast to the make-up she has smeared to look more combat appropriate. Her eyes are darkened by the heavy eye shadow and smeared eyeliner, making her look even more wild and savage than usual. She keeps stride with you, grinning with excitement, practically bounding with each step. "I hope it's Dragon Army soldiers. I got a running bounty for their heads!"
The time changing into armor and grabbing weapons has delayed your arrival to the Graveyard. (Strictly speaking, it takes several minutes to change into armor, and you probably wouldn't make it by RAW, but I'll cut you a break, so you can have some fun.) You will arrive during the next round. MrUncleTio please roll initiative for Hastos, and I will add you in for Round 2.
The disciple of darkness dared to attack Sharn with light. No wonder it was simple for him to dodge it. In the time that took him to get out of the way, Sera engaged with three of the robed figures, and one of them started to escape. It might have seemed callous of Sharn to leave Sera to fend off three people, even if temporarily, but she was heavily armored and heavily angry. Quite honestly, he was more worried about the three cultists.
Sharn broke off in a sprint after cult member green. With his speed, he caught up before the eye could blink. Though he wanted to beat the existence out of this man, he knew that there was much to learn. One leaping strike to the jaw, then another and another and another. Though, the last had too much momentum behind it, and too little timing, making it fly right before the jaw. Two attacks + flurry of blows for non lethal, me hopes. (17 to hit: 7 dmg; nat 20 for 25: 6 dmg; 13 to hit, might be a miss: 4 dmg, and the 8 missed for sure)
Sharn's rapid attacks overwhelm Cult Member Green with expert preceision and dynamic feats of acrobatic skill! The first crack to the jaw slams his jaw shut so hard it cracks several teeth. Before he can spit out the blood, another bludgeoning strike splits his lips open, leaving a round bruise and knocking several teeth loose. And the third strike splits the flesh on his cheekbone. Crimson rolls from the fresh wound, and his left eye is starting to swell shut. He spits out two teeth and gasps while scrambling clumsily away from the relentless assault, narrowly avoiding Sharn's final attack.
Cult Member Green is Bloodied. You may roll a Medicine Check to determine the approximate remaining HP of anyone you can see.
Cult Member Blue, still blinded by the effects of the Color Spray, raises a parchment into the air, and traces a sigil of Sargonnas in front of it with his dagger. "Sargonnas, protect me from my enemies!" Blue light shimmers around his cloaked frame, then solidifies and vanishes.
Cult Member Blue casts Shield of Faith, granting him +2 AC Bonus for 10 minutes. Cult Member Blue is still Blinded.
Blinking his eyes and moving from memory, Cult Member Blue stumbles towards the mauseleum in the northwest.
Cult Fanatic White glares at Sera, his eyes flashing with magical energy. "Filthy sinner. You are unfit for my presence! I command you to flee from my sight!" His eyes flash purple, and Sera feels a strong urge to turn around and run as fast as she can. He steps back slowly, never breaking eye contact with Sera.
Cult Fanatic White casts Command on Sera to Flee. Larskolstad please roll a Wisdom Save (DC 11) to avoid being forced to spend your next turm running away from the fight as fast as Sera's movement capabilities allow. Cultist moves 5 feet away from the Spiritual Weapon.
Hrothbert_Neruca Merkas is up. At the end of your turn, Cultist Red and Cultist Blue will no longer be Blinded.
Battle Map:
On the Way to the Graveyard...
Hastos and Ororana approach the graveyard at a frantic pace, and can see sillhouettes moving in the darkness. Flashing lights and a glowing, floating weapon indicate that battle has already begun, and some of them seem to be casters.
"Ohhh shit." Ororana breathes. "Those are the ghosts of Santekh I was telling you about!" Ororana looks at her axe with diminished confidence. "I'm not sure what steel can do against spectres." She pulls out a small vial filled with blue liquid and guzzles it down and tosses the vial on the ground. Her body glows blue for a moment, then fades.
Moving up along side Sera just outside melee range of cultist red, Merkas shouts “You’re Chaos will end here!” As an undulating bolt flies at the fanatic. (Cast Chaos Bolt 13 to hit, 13-Force Damage)
He pulls out Splinter and Shard ready to run in and knock these guys out before they get too far away. Looking at the Mausoleum for inspiration he starts thinking through options (insight 4), not seeing anything of note he says to the one stumbling north to the Mausoleum. “I wouldn’t go that way if I were you, I think it’s beat you join us and help fix the damage you done before it hets worse for you” (15- persuasion to stand down and turn himself in)
Cult Member White's eyes fade back to their normal color, and he curses when he realizes your will is too strong to break.
Cult Member Red, holds his arms before him, preparing to block the Chaos Bolt as it careens towards him. But his defenses aren't strong enough to resist the strike! The blast tears his robe, blowing his robe back and shredding it to tatters, exposing his leather armor which compress around him from the force of the vicious attack! Bruises form on his arms, and he gasps for air, blood trickling from his nose and ears. He remains standing, but his kness are looking wobbly.
Cult Member Red is Bloodied.
Cult Member Blue continues to make his escape. You can't make out his retort through his winded words, but it sounds hostile from the tone.
Cult Member Blue is not Persuaded.
Realizing he's outnumbered and his allies are scattered, Cult Member Red looks to his right, and scatters, heading south, appearing to flee through the main gate.
Round 2!
Cult Member Green continues running, seemingly uninterested in fighting Sharn. When he reaches the altar, he places his hand on it and green energy pours through him. He points at Sharn. "Death take you. Be blighted, scum!"
cheapjoke123 you may make an attack of opportunity. cheapjoke123 please roll a CON save DC13 to avvoid taking 33 Necrotic Damage. Take 16 on a successful save. If your AoO succesfully defeats the cult member, you don't have to roll.
Sera watched as the cultist, bloodied but stubborn, still refused to fall. Around them, the others were scattering—fleeing in all directions like startled animals. Her gaze locked on one of them, the one who had strutted with the most bravado moments before.
“Sargonnas must be proud—watching you flee like frightened deer,” she called after him with a sharp, mocking smile. “Careful now… wouldn’t want you to trip and hurt yourself.”
Her focus snapped back to the cultist still holding his ground. With a swift gesture, she directed her spiritual weapon to reposition—its radiant blade humming as it floated around to flank him. ( Spiritual weapon move nortwest to flank white cultist)
Then she moved in, her real blade a blur in the moonlight. The two-pronged assault closed in like jaws. The cultist barely had time to react before being caught in a flurry of dazzling slashes, magical and energy striking in perfect rhythm. One blow seared across his arm, the spiritual sword slicing a trail of glowing agony down his back.
( move up north to white cultist and flank him . both attacks get ac 19 for total of 12 damage)
The air filled with the acrid stench of scorched flesh, his scream swallowed by the cold night wind.
Sera didn’t stop. Her movements were precise, unrelenting. She was a knight battling injustice and evil right now and did not hesitate but would send theese cowardly followers to Sargonnas hell.
A cornered rat will take down tigers when fighting for its life, so too the cornered cultist managed to avoid Sharn's swing as it fled towards the altar. Power, evil and corruptive, surged through the cultist and then into Sharn. His insides writhed with blight and rot, forcing Sharn's hand to his own chest out of reflex. He was still standing, but it was as if all his organs groaned in protest of his persistence at the same time. The exchange offered Sharn an important clue, however. If the cultist was able to use such magic on his own, they would've done it without the altar.
Cult Member White's wounds seem trivial enough for him to carry on, though he's clearly in pain. His eyes dart back and forth, looking for an escape.
Cult Member Green laughs at Sharn's pain. "You're outmatched foolish dwarf! Flee and I might spare you!"
Ororana turns the corner on the road and spots Cult Member Red running full tilt towards her. Shrieking a wild battle cry she takes a running leap at Cult Member Red, her axe held high behind her, ready to chop him in half!
Ororana Attacks: 18 (Hit), Deals 25 Damage
Cult Member Red staggers back, then splits from shoulder to hip and crumbles to the ground, gore splashing the graveyard's soil. "Ok... they're flesh and blood!" She says, pleased by the success of the strike, and more than a little relieved. "THEY'RE FLESH AND BLOOD!" She hollers back to Hastos. "Waste of an epensive potion, then." She mutters to herself, then looks at the battle scene before her to make out who to attack next. Merkas and Sera seem to have things under control, but Sharn seems to be in a bit of trouble. Gritting her teeth, she sets her path towards the beleagured monk.
cheapjoke123 Sharn is up. Cult Member Green is Bloodied. Cult Member Red is Dead.
The pain shockwave of pain was unimaginable to a regular person, but not to Sharn and his companions. Not to warriors, be them good or evil. When Sharn's hand dropped from his chest and to his side, his expression mirrored something not many could've had: compassion. It was his focus that allowed him to maintain it, and the familiar taste of death that triggered it.
"I do not blame you, for having fear in your beliefs; and I do not blame you, for defending yourself. But you're sick with evil, and this must be cured."
Sharn's steps couldn't have been described as fast. They were smooth deliberate things. He wouldn't kill the man in front of him, cultist green, the thing was wounded and afraid, Sharn had to be precise. His first blow came as a faint, merely to make his foe flinch and get his hands away from the altar. The second was low, a hit to the knee to get him at eye level. The third and fourth were almost twin blows. If only by slight ill timing, Sharn's open palms struck the side of the cultist's ears like two moving walls intended to knock out and discombobulate. Answers were more valuable than corpses. (13 for the first attack, a miss. 18, nat 20 for 25, and 24; for a total of: 7, 12, and 8 damage respectively. Being as non lethal as possible.)
Sharn claps Cult Member Green's hand from the altar. He snarls angrily at you, but the snarl is replaced with a look of pain and suprise as his leg is knocked out from under him, knocking him to the ground! Before he can utter protest, Sharn's calloused hands clap against his ears. Light fades from his vision and darkness takes him before he hits the ground. The altar stops glowing its eerie green color as the cultist falls to the ground.
Cult Member Blue runs into the mauseleum. The shelter provides him full cover, and you hear him mutter some words that echo incoherently off the stone walls. Purple energy crackles to life around the structure, just in time for Hastos to see as he rounds the corner and starts up the stairs behind Ororana!
