Even with the chains, Edwin is strong. He fights to surface in the dark water and help stool stay afloat—then he sees Nacht starting to go under. Instinct takes over and he rages against the very water itself!

Dagna and Karys, despite the chains, are able to reorient themselves and start the swim to shore. Nacht, however, hits the water like a rock. Panicking a bit, it's unable to gain any sort of ground (or water). Edwin, now juggling Stool and Nacht, almost gets dragged under by Nacht's flailing.

As Dagna reaches the shore, she looks back and is horrified to see Edwin struggling to stay afloat with Nacht and Stool. Desperately, she drops her unfamiliar backpack and begins to rifle through it for anything she can use to help.
Dagna is able to find a good length of rope sitting right in the top of the bag. The other prisoners are able to get their bearings and are heading for shore as well.
However...rising up from the pool, what looked like an oily patch is now rising up into a gray blob. It begins moving toward the group as well.

The kuo-toa, being a fish-man, has no problems zooming through the water and pulling up on the bank. He surveys the scene, and sits in his meditation pose impassively.
