Yarina’s eyes sweep the dim ceiling of the ruined temple as Gareth speaks, her grip tightening slightly on the hilt of her greatsword. “Some do,” she replies in a hushed tone, her voice echoing faintly in the still air. “I’ve read accounts of oozes dropping from ceilings onto unsuspecting prey—silent, heavy, and nearly impossible to detect until it’s too late.” Her gaze lingers on the stone above the altar. “They like dark, damp places, and they don’t think like we do. No fear, no pride. Just hunger.”
You enter the long-forgotten temple to Abbathor at the request of your new dwarven friends. Zephyros' torch creates dancing shadows amongst the pillars as you proceed forward. Zephyros cautiously moves forward as the light of his torch illuminates the room; you all see an Ooze-like creature slowly approaching you from the ceiling above the altar. The large ooze in front of you resembles a giant, dark yellow amoeba consisting of a thick, porous, golden sludge moving slowly along the temple ceiling.
Zephyros,
You spot a second one of these creatures attached to the Southern wall of this room. Both creatures begin moving towards the group at your approach.
Gareth takes aim and releases an arrow at the jelly hanging over the altar, concentrating on hitting it in a spot that might do more damage to the thing.
(ooc: Lyra's turn is after Eldrin's, but I think my actions won't interfere with his, so I'll go ahead and post mine now.)
The cleric, small as she is, squeezes between Meiraand Eldrinwith ease. She points a little finger toward the ooze everyone else is attacking and mutters a holy word under her breath—just loud enough to make the air around her shimmer slightly. Then, with a wide grin, she adds, "Lady Luck says hello, you ugly thing!"
After this, she squeezes back to her original spot.
Eldrin freezes as the glistening sludge slithers along the ceiling, its grotesque, almost deliberate movement defying any natural logic. His breath catches, not quite from fear, but from something colder, deeper. He’s never seen its like before.
A dozen thoughts flood his mind, alchemical theories, arcane taxonomy, obscure bestiaries, but none match what drips just above them. Fascinating, he thinks, even as revulsion crawls down his spine.
With a slow, precise movement, he raises one hand and draws a geometric shape in the air with his fingertip, three sharp triangles nested together. With each point traced, a shimmer of sapphire-blue energy coils around his wrist.
“Let’s see how resilient you are,” he murmurs, voice level, almost inquisitive.
Three darts of arcane force spiral into being around him—each shaped like a slender shard of light, crystalline and humming with tension. With a flick of his wrist, they streak upward in perfect unison, crackling through the air before slamming into the ooze with concussive pops, sending shudders through the viscous mass.
Eldrin narrows his eyes, studying its reaction. “Curious…” he mutters, more to himself than anyone else, as the ooze ripples in unsettling silence.
Gareth: 24 Your arrow flies straight into the Ooze, completely engulfed by it. The Ooze recoils from the hit but continues forward, undaunted by the attack.
Meira: 19 Seconds after Gareth's arrow hits, your arrow also penetrates the slime creature. It recoils slightly when hit by both arrows but surges forward in other areas. Afterwards, you retreat into the room behind you and disappear from view.
Eldrin: 14 Your ethereal darts strike the creature in multiple spots. The creature undulates for a moment, then shrugs off the energy blast and continues ever forward along the ceiling.
Lyra: 14 Moving between Meira and Eldrin, you get a line of sight on the creature. Your whispered prayer is answered immediately, and a mote of shimmering light shoots forward from your outstretched fingertip. The creature tries manipulating its form to allow the mote to pass harmlessly through it but fails. The mote barely hits the creature. It begins to pour from the ceiling to the floor. It appears to be having difficulty keeping its form at this point. Afterwards, you withdraw back to your original location.
Zephyros shouts in fury, his words intending to provoke an attack on him. "Eat this, ya stupid little monster dessert!" Ironheart bites down on the torch handle in his right hand, pulls out a dagger from a sheathe located under his armpit, andchucks the little blade at the Ooze in front of him.
The bear of a man spins his trident around in his left hand, and prepares to charge.
For now Zephyros holds his position, returns his torch to it's original place, and yells back to his comrades, "Second Tango on the right!"
Zephyros' dagger disappears into the creature and causes it to recoil, but it presses ever forward towards you. Your words seem to have no effect on the Ooze.
Ochre Jelly A comes forward 10 feet, struggling to maintain a coherent form. The slow-moving creature stops just out of range of Zephyros.
Ochre Jelly B moves across the floor before wrapping itself around the Southwestern pillar. It lashes out at Gareth with a pseudopod. The attack connects seconds after Zephyros' warning to the others of the second danger in the room. The skin where Gareth is hit begins to burn due to the caustic nature of the Ooze.
"Acid! Keep back." Seeing the caustic effect as the ooze makes contact with Gareth, Yarina frowns, realizing that ranged combat may be the superior approach. She moves around the northwest pillar to 5 ft in front of Zephyros, facing south. Blue, icy flames peek from her lips for a moment before she unleashes her frost breath at the oozes, hoping to take care of the weakened one.
Action: Breathe Weapon. Con DC 12 or 5 cold damage, half on success. (15 ft cone to hopefully hit both slimes)
Your blast of icy cold breath freezes the Ooze to your left, destroying it. The Ooze wrapped around the pillar takes some damage from the blast as well.
(OOC - My apologies - Meira meant to go NE not NW! It was my mistake in the post. It puts her between the wall and the NW pillar. Basically trying to hide behind the pillar.)
(OOC - My apologies - Meira meant to go NE not NW! It was my mistake in the post. It puts her between the wall and the NW pillar. Basically trying to hide behind the pillar.)
The fight is going smoothly, so this time Lyra steps out from behind the protective wall and positions herself right next to Eldrin. She extends her hand, mimicking one of those strange weapons used by gunslingers and some artificers, and whispers, "Pew pew!"
It's not the holiest of incantations, but Tymora seems to find it amusing. A thin ray of radiant energy shoots out and strikes the remaining ooze with a burst of shimmering light.
Eldrin watches as Yarina’s frost breath blooms into the chamber, the air crackling with cold. The nearest ooze lets out a shuddering ripple before stilling entirely, its form crusted and fractured into inert shards. He exhales a short, approving breath through his nose.
“Elegantly done,” he mutters, more to himself than anyone else.
Then his eyes flick up to the remaining ooze.
“Very well,” he says quietly, adjusting his stance. One hand rises to draw a smooth line through the air, his fingers trailing heat. His other hand extends, palm forward, as a thin thread of flame coalesces at his fingertips.
“Let’s test the creature’s sensitivity to fire.”
A streak of flame flashes from his hand with a snap, arcing upward through the stale temple air.
He steps slightly to the side, just enough to suggest he's readjusting for his next attack, though in truth, it's to create a marginally larger buffer between himself and the creature. His eyes narrow on the ooze, studying its sluggish movement with renewed scrutiny.
Upon seeing his ally attacked, Zephyros rushes to Gareth's aid. Ironheart shouts over to the ranger, "Are you alright, my half-elven friend?" The warrior moves south 5 feet and runs the strange blob through with his polearm. "Stay beside me, we'll finish it off comrade!" Zephyros laughs confidently.
Trident Attack: 17
Damage: 7 Piercing
Reaction: Zephyroswill use his fighting style: Protection to impose disadvantage on Ochre Jelly B's next attack against Gareth.
Gareth: 24 The wound to your main arm causes you to miss your first attack, but your follow-up attack connects, causing the Ooze to shift away from your blade.
Meira: 19 Shooting between Zephyros and Gareth proves difficult for you, but your arrow just barely hits the Ooze before it moves out of the way. You can hear the muffled sound of your arrow hitting the pillar enshrouded by the creature as it penetrates.
Eldrin: 14 You cast your fire magic, and the bolt arcs forward. At the last possible second, the creature shifts its form away from the blast area, narrowly dodging the attack and causing your bolt to slam into the pillar with no effect.
Lyra: 14 At your whispered prayer, a shimmering beam of light shoots like a bullet from your finger. The creature recoils as the radiant light hits it.
Zephyros: 13 You strike the strange blob with your trident, piercing its form with three pointy spikes. As it slides to the pillar's base, the creature begins to show signs of damage.
Ochre Jelly A: 8 (Dead)
Ochre Jelly B: 8 The Ochre Jelly attempts to lash out at Zephyros this time as the last person to attack it when Zephyros moves next to Gareth. (Attack 5+4=9) However, the armored warrior easily evades the pseudopod using his shield to deflect the blow.
