"Something about your sorcery has always been very familiar..." Matthew muses, "very human. I suppose we all bear the weight of our fathers' sins in one way or another. Will that be all for today? I have a dinner to attend."
Vark looks stricken at the comment. He’d never much considered his father at all, but Matthew’s interest had to mean something. Or was the devil just trying to deflect from the warlock’s innocent but pointed questions. “Uhm.. y-yes. Thank you, Matthew.” Vark looks away, off into the streets, already trying to work out how to best relay the information he’s gained.
After paying for the rooms, Jex heads up to his. He sits on the floor considering his options. Who should make an appearance at dinner tonight?
Perhaps Hamza? No, I don't want to burn him now, he's needed for the guild in Sheercleft
Professor Nikolaj? Here from the elven lands to prove his credentials to Vark. Too far fetched, how would he know to follow us here? Don't blow a good disguise with stupidity. That's a coincidence even Thurston would not ignore.
Hekhtar? No, he probably wouldn't even be allowed in, same for Karl.
Perhaps Henri then? He can go anywhere. Yes Henri is perfect.
Jex begins to pull on the disguise, hiding his ears, picking out jewelry, ensuring his skin has not a single blemish. Less than a minute into his disguise though he stops. What are you doing? This dinner is for companions, the disguise you haven't considered. The one you rarely wore outside of business before but now you wear at all times with these people. Tonight you will go as Jex.
Besides, Aiden hasn't met you yet and you don't want to be behind the others, he may end up on the side of protecting the devil man.
Jex wipes the makeup from his face, he puts on a clean tunic and fresh trousers, removes the dark stained combat garb and the shimmering elven cloak. places the rapier at his side and hides some daggers about his person, styles his hair and stands straight. Who is this stranger? He keeps the ears toned down, a slight cap covering the half elven points went a long way in dwarven lands he had discovered, though those, no the one, who knew him knew he had more reasons to resent the elves than any dwarf he had met.
He heads downstairs to sit at the table with Brundir and Thurston.
"Good evening. I decided to join you after all. The battle was intense, and perhaps even I should let myself go and enjoy a drink today. Perhaps we can find Uglar too, I would like for him to meet you all properly." He casts his eyes around the room to see if Uglar has joined the other soldiers here.
Jex takes the drink from Thurston, and rather than his characteristic broody sopping, raises it in toast before taking a big drink.
He looks up and beams at Aiden. "Why of course, any friend of Thurston is a friend of ours!" He pushes up closer to Thurston himself to make space on his other side and gestures for Aiden to sit. "Come, tell us about yourself."
Aiden sits, folding his 6 foot frame into the booth. "Thanks," he says.
"There's not much to tell," he says. "I'm from southern Quenlan, on the bay. Norscans from Eikthyrnir took me from my home when I was only a decade old. I was raised by them, taught to fight. I worship and wield the power of Thor, just like Thurston." He eyes Thurston's hammer and chuckles. "Well, maybe not just like Thurston."
He points to an unclaimed mug of ale in the middle of the table. "Anyone going to drink that?"

Jex sits nodding respectfully, looking small and slight between the two giant men either side of him.
"Interesting. Go ahead, drink. I too am a worshipper of Thor, though the gifts he gives me are rather different. The understanding of his teachings calls to us all though, and seeing the way another honours him is one of the reasons I joined these people on the first place." He nods." But tell me, why did you leave the islands? Your tale rings so familiar to me I am curious to hear what came next for you."
"Yes Aiden " interjects Thurston "tell us... how did you end up here? I couldn't believe it was your voice when I fisrt heard you " the norscan takes another bite of the roasted meat he is eating.
"I left the islands about five years ago," he says. "I wanted to see the world. It's really as simple as that. Joined a mercenary company, found that they weren't scrupulous enough for my tastes, and ended up escorting caravans. Caravan from Shamely to Khaz A Grungron was my second escort job."
He pauses to take a long pull of the ale. "How did your group end up here?"

Vark returns, a gust of wind blowing in as he opens the door to the Hammer and Anvil. He quickly spots the others and rushes over to the table. “I talked to him, to Matthew. So this- this ruby, he called it a ‘codex’. Apparently it’s pretty powerful he said-“ he stops his rush of speech and information as he gets the sense he completely interrupted the conversation that was being had. “Oh uhm... s-sorry, that was rude.”
"Well... it's... it's ok I guess.. we were only chatting... but calm dowm Vark, it seems that the very Fenris is after your heels. Here take a drink... now... tell us everything he told you..."
"Yes please. This is more important. No offence." He looks briefly to Aiden. "If Matthew has spoken to you we must hear it while his exact words are fresh in your mind. Sit, spare no detail, we must know his mood, his expressions, his tone."
"None taken," Aiden says. "I'm curious, myself, about this 'Matthew.' And of course, then I'll give my pitch as to why you should hire me to help you seek out this ruby."

Vark takes the offered drink and takes a deep sip before beginning. “Right. So the ruby is something that belongs to Matthew. He called it a codex, I... I guess it contains some power or information or- or something. He said I’d be able to use it, that we’d all benefit from it. He was very, very intent that we retrieve it. I asked how it came to be here and that seemed to make him angry, he said it was stolen from him I’m... I’m guessing m-maybe by Spangelhelm? He just seemed... like he really wants it. Maybe...” he glances around at the others, with a look of disbelief at what he is about to say. “Maybe we can use that. As like lev- leverage? I don’t know. He is very powerful but... he has limits. He wasn’t able to free his brother from the Imperial vault in Sarameia. It’s warded against him.” He looks to Jex as he mentions this, then shrugs. “I’ve already made an agreement with him, it’s gone well so far. Maybe... maybe there’s something to be gained from the group negotiating with him as well.”
Jex's eyes gloss over, a slight smile on his face. "The imperial vault." He leans back in his chair, almost disappearing between the bulking forms of the giant humans beside him. "Now that is a nut I would love to crack. The dream of any..." He breaks off, sitting back up. "Upstanding Sarameian citizen. It's everyone's dream to see the vault." He swallows hard. "Perhaps the most protected place I have ever heard of. Not that I am an expert on such things or anything of course."
He gives a wink. "Ok, I know you all think I'm a charming, lovable guy who happens to be good at hiding, and excellent with sword and bow, an outstanding travelling companion, and teller of witty tails, wise and intelligent, well travelled..." He sighs. "Oh sorry, right. But there is more to me than that, I suppose I should tell you, but this may be a shock so please do not judge me too harshly. I am not just a priest of Thor, and all round nice guy. I used to be hired to get things, or people. You know, like a thief and an assassin. and that Vault, is something I would love to be the one to break into. What that would do to my price..."He looks around. "I know, I know, hard to believe that I may have a dishonest past., but it's true, I swear."
“Jex... that’s uhm... well that’s not exactly surprising.” Vark follows the statement with a bemused smile, and it’s the first genuine one that the assassin has earned from the mage in a while. “Oh uhm... Matthew also said it might be dangerous... getting the codex I mean. He thinks we can handle it of course but... he said the codex might have attracted... unsavory things.”
"Yes, shocking indeed." It's unclear whether he misheard Vark, or is just being himself. "The codex attracting undesirable things is to be expected though, items closely associated to evil often become evil, and then when left alone they attract more evil to them. I'm sure we can handle it, what concerns me is what we should do after we have it."
"About surprisin' as warts on a troll's arse..." Brundir grumbles over his food. "Where do we start, Vark? If ye hadn't noticed, dwarves dig deep an' vast. Could be Matthew jus' points an' we start diggin', or we could know what door t'knock on instead."

"Vark," Matthew adds, as his young warlock looks away in the direction of his friends, "bring me my codex. At all costs."
With that, Matthew dissolves into red mist and is gone once more.
