Thuston let the others speak as he slowly tastes his second mug of ale. The first one was downed almost in a single, long, sip.
" I think we can spent all night talking about how similar are our Gods... or we can focus on what they mean. Odin, Moradin, I am sure that the elves has another name for their leader, Torellon? I don't know, point is that we mortals assing some virtues to our Gods. They serve as an example and as a goal to achieve. I pray to Thor, and following his example try to be bold, brave, just and... have fun " he says with a wink and drinking again " But the thing is, we should focus on what Matthew and his sibilings represent. It doesn't really matter how do we name them, Talona or Morrigan... they are bad bussiness no matter the name you called them for. I suspect that this Matthew is craving for more power now that he is freed and knows that his brothers and sister are not. And that he wants to take all their power to himself to become more than he already is. We must be wary not to be their pawns again. I am sure that puts you in a difficult position my friend. " he says to Vark " I think that once we pay a visit to your giant friend you could talk to him about all of this."
Aiden sighs. He wanted to pursue the chain of divine similarities until the early morning. But Thurston was right. He takes a long pull and drains the rest of his ale. He lets out a chuckle and raises his empty mug. "You're right, Thurston," he says. "I have to say, this has been the most interesting day I've had in a while. Thank you for having me along."

Chronicles of Arden: Sheercleft - Aiden Olrikson | Human | Tempest Domain Cleric of Thor
Jex sits quietly, patiently listening to all the theories and the discussion on religions. The gods had never bothered him too much beyond the one he truly served, and he knew it was known by many names, none of which it cared for, nor did it care for the worship in temples. The problem itself was deeper than religion and the nagging at the back of his mind bothered him. Getting embroiled in larger causes was a pain he preferred be left to the noble and righteous, but as he glanced around the table at his friends, he realised they were the noble and righteous, and that he was one of them now.
"What was this red light? Did it let him come though? We cannot impact the events of the past, nor can we do battle with gods, but if we know what he wants, perhaps we can keep it from him. Did you make him angry? Or did something change in him? Or did you cast a spell Vark? Something must have triggered the light..."
Val glances over to Jex as they drink alone for a brief time. "Aye. I do not like these games we find ourselves in. I long for the days where we were simply hunting bandits in the hills before wizards and devils came in. I do not like this." She says as she turns back to her mug.
She listens quietly as the others arrive and begin speaking of gods and their similarities and what impact it could have. Before too long she gives up trying to keep all the names and details straight, instead keeping to her ales and just enjoying the company of her friends. After a time she catches the barmaid and requests something hot and hearty to eat, deferring to their local foods the dwarves enjoy. She did not know when or if they would ever find themselves back in these lands and she longed to sup on their local foods.
Following Val's with his eyes when she stands and goes to order food, Thurston stands and goes after her, with his mind not really ready for another Jex-Vark argument.
" Had you orderer something to eat? " he asks over Val's shoulder " That's a good idea! Oy! two more of what she ordered if you don't mind, and one more for each of them" he points to the table where the rest of the party is speaking.
"Val I... " the goliath notices that he is having a hard time to look her in the eye and that he blushes a little bit " I would like to... I mean.. if you don't mind... I... ahem.. " he drinks from his tankard " You know that I admire the way you fight, and that you are one of the bravest, fiercest warriors I've ever known... not that's the only thing I like of you... I mean you are gorgeous and funny and... " he suddenly stops, as if he was realizing what his mouth is saying and now his face is clearly red " yes.. wel... what I mean is... I would love to train with you... if you would teach me how to use my anger in fight... You know... I... I had problems with it in the past... I mean.. for not be able to control it " his eyes goes down again but this time for another reason " Whatever... Would you teach me?" he looks her now in the eyes and she can see many things on them.
Vark's attention swims in the theological discourse. It's clear to him now that these deities could all be connected, different interpretations of the same entities, and that Matthew turns up again and again as a trickster and a deceiver. But there don't seem to be any connections to the Dawn Gods, or any insight as to what Matthew is planning. Jex's line of questions snaps him back to the present conversation. "Uhm... I think the light happened when he saw the codex. He was excited. As for what he wants... I still can't figure it out, and he won't tell me. All I know right now is that he needs to free his siblings. He's still in Saramei trying to free the dragon Arawn. He said that once they're all free then 'balance will be restored' but... I don't know what that means. If we knew more about the Dawn Gods maybe we could figure that out. I bet- oh.. OH wow I just realized I can talk to Aury now! He might know, he is pretty old. And... Matthew made a comment like they knew each other."
"He got excited and it turned the sky red here? Was he here and just invisible? Perhaps we should send a message to Saramei to see if there were similar lights there if that is where he claims to be?" He thinks for a moment. "Perhaps we should volunteer to help retrieve his brother if he is also trapped in a stone. In Saramei..." Jex furrows his brow considering the implications and the possibilities. "It doesn't make sense, why did he want the codex so badly if he just left it with you? Why was it so anxious to escape itself only to be settled and happy outside?"
“W-well I... I don’t really understand it to b-be honest. He wasn’t really there, Aiden passed his hands right through where I saw him standing... b-but he did connect with the codex some how. Maybe through me? I don’t know...” Vark’s eyes remain avoidant as he stammers through his explanation- or lack thereof. “But uhm... w-well I did have the same thought, to offer to help in Saramei. He said the vault there is warded against him specifically. But I... I don’t know if that’s a good idea anymore. You were r-r-right J-Jex I...” he shakes his head in frustration. “I think it’s too dangerous to trust him. At all.”
Jex smiles, relief clear on his face. "Good. I don't intend to trust him, but I do intend to keep his brother from his reach. Besides, breaking into that vault has been a personal ambition of mine since I was a young boy."
He smiles warmly. "What's done is done Vark, no point worrying about what may have been different, only how we can shift our strategy going forwards. That relies on us all knowing what happens, if he accessed the codex, it explains things, even if only a little."
He sits back again. "Arawn you say though? You know who this is I assume? "
Jex's approving response does seem to calm Vark's nerves, but only a little. "It's his brother, a big purple dragon. He was the dragon that the codex showed fighting the two elves, near that city uhm... B-Beschwhatever. I also had a vision of him looming over a a huge forest. If he was fighting elves, then maybe that was Eldren. And- and I also saw him with the other three, including Matthew, all with-" He stops suddenly as he realizes he'd forgotten an important detail. "All with other runestones. They each had one. Red, green, purple, and black."
Jex smiles. "Indeed. More than that though. His domain is death and no doubt he is at odds with the long-lived elves who deny a position in his kingdom. They of course have their own name, though, for what comes and who shepherds them there. The city is Beschcadik. A grand city I had doubted I'd see again. But for this, it seems it is my destiny laid before me Vark, a thing I never much believed in. If your vision is correct, then three more deities are probably trapped similarly in stones, and we may be able to keep them there, or use them against each other in some way." His eyes stare up as he clearly fantasises about the options before them with deity filled stones at their disposal.
Vark nods as Jex's thinking echoes his own. Still he seems unsettled though. Matthew has only helped him, has only encouraged him. But clearly there is so much the devil is leaving out. He doesn't truly want to oppose Matthew, just understand his intentions. But as long as his patron refuses to fully confide in the warlock, he can only assume the worst. For now he is resigned to searching elsewhere for the answers, and he politely excuses himself from the table and returns to his room.
He sets Path Maker down, doffs the armor which is finally starting to break in from wear, and finally he places his arcane focus in front of him. He spends a long moment just staring at the diminished codex, now only a proxy of the actual relic he'd possessed only hours ago. The entire interaction plays out over and over again in his mind. Matthew's avaricious wrath, his own heart pounding in his ears, that infernal hand reaching out to him. Truthfully he'd only taken it because he thought Matthew would snatch him away, save him from the inevitable ire of his friends. He'd rather flee than face that shame. Well.. flee or lie. "Always a coward." he whispers to himself.
He knows he is about to tell the same lie to Seid and the interaction will give him no comfort as it usually does, but the promise of more information is enough motivation to pull him from the depths of his self loathing. Vark places his fingertips on the codex and his posture bolts upright as the arcane database connects to his consciousness. His eyes beam the same crimson red, as do the ruby veins that now crawl up his arm and neck. The warlock watches as an interface of geometric matrices and glyphs appears in the air around him. It's a far cry from the overwhelming surge of information that he first experienced, and now he is able to direct the codex's functions with relative ease. The interface shifts and begins to race past him like a burning highway as Vark attempts to connect with Seid. The process is out of time: somehow feeling like both an hour and a few seconds. In truth, ten minutes pass as he hones in on the wizard, but finally a connection is made. "Hey Seid..." as concisely as possible Vark recounts what happened for his friend, again leaving out the detail that he handed the codex's original form to Matthew. "Interesting, the fact that he could connect to the ruby without being there. Vark, please be careful. What else did you learn?" Vark repeats the process, though this time his message is more so a list of topics for Seid to research. He lingers for a moment after Seid responds, considering whether or not to keep chatting, to stay up all night as if nothing was wrong. But of course he decides against it. He doesn't deserve escapism, and he has another promise of information- as well as a hope for some sagely advice.
Once again his mind races along the ruby circuits, but this time in a different direction. When the interface finally stops buzzing past, he isn't sure if he's been successful in locking on to the giant or not, but he gives it a go anyway. "Hello, Aury? It's me, Vark. Are you okay? So much has happened to me... I need your help. Do you know the ancient mage, Matthew?"
The geometric fractals around Vark blur in his vision as he stares into the distance, disbelief written across his face. His hands go to his temples, disconnecting from the ruby entirely now. Was it some sort of protective barrier? His mind goes back to the scrying spell he'd cast in Hyarantar, which hadn't failed, but had encountered similar interference. Vark wouldn't put it past the giant to defend himself, especially considering what Vark had witnessed the last time he had seen Aury. Still, the lack of a response from his dearest friend leaves an empty space in his chest. When he finally lays down to sleep, his eyes stay open for a long while before slumber takes him.
As the others start to scatter and after his brief conversation with Val, Thurston comes back to their table and brings two big mugs, one for him and another for Aiden. He talks in their native tongue to the cleric.
"So... after your first taste of what we do... what do you think? Are you going to stick with us? I think that we will try to get rid of those dragonborn sisters that pretend to be the Morrigan, they had quite a group of bandits and cutthroats that ones. Then I guess we will try to go and visit Vark's giant friend. I hope that would help the guy, he seems quite lost even if we, specially me and Jex, are trying to supoprt and give him direction. And then... well, by Thor's beard I do not understand anything that has to be with this Matthew and all his brothers and sisters, but my guts tell me that is bad... worse that we could imagine and it would be better if we hadn't heard of him. Point is... I think we could use your help Aiden, you are a good lad and a faithful follower of Thor. And I know for sure the rest would be happy to have you with us."
Aiden takes a long pull from the mug of ale, and laughs after Thurston has finished talking. "Let's see. Four strange divine beings, one of which may or may not be Loki, a mystery stemming from a town that you now help run, potential political intrigue, and above all, something to do other than guarding grain wagons from one place to the next?" He pauses for dramatic effect, then continues, "I don't know how I could say no. This is a good group you've found, Thurston. I'd be happy to tag along for more of...whatever this is."
