He draws a scimitar, optimistically slashing out at the other shadowy creature and is somewhat surprised to feel some kind of resistance as his blade passes through. He backs off behind Aiden, hoping to draw the thing after him and create openings for Thurston and Val.
Aiden reaches out with a crack of thunder to shatter whatever enchantment was causing this danger. His eyes flare, and his spell strikes out at the mask, but whatever was causing the shadows persisted. He shakes his head and looks at Vark. "Any other ideas? I can't do anything about a curse today."

Chronicles of Arden: Sheercleft - Aiden Olrikson | Human | Tempest Domain Cleric of Thor
Val turns her attention to the last flittering shadow and once again throws all her fury into the insubstantial undead, surprised at the lack of resistance when Rook slams into the ground with a heavy thud that shakes the area around them. "What are we doing? One of you, fix this!"
"We're trying!" He responds to the furious barbarian before looking over to Aiden. "Other than trying to break it... Uhm... well I tried dispelling magic on Jex before, m-maybe I should try it on the mask again." Red sparks fly from Vark's arm and fingers as he rushes against time to focus the codex quickly. Again the beam fires, this time locking on to the mask, before scrambling in chaotic waves in an effort to disrupt the enchantment. Again Vark looks to Aiden, hopeful that this time he'd get confirmation that the spell worked.
Vark nods. "Uhm okay okay, that's good, uhm... m-maybe I can figure out what's wrong with it. It'll take a minute though. Cover me!" he shouts to the others as he dashes into the fray. He skids to a stop next to Jex and holds out the ruby. "I'm j-j-just gonna uhm... this-this'll only take a minute." He stammers, nervous that Jex will object to the codex's aid. But the mage doesn't wait for a response and reaches a hand out to pull the mask around Jex’s neck closer to him. A soft red glow emanates from the cubic face closest to the mask. The light scans over the item in waves, and a similar light fills Vark's eyes as he begins to decipher the data that the codex is feeding him.
Bründir rushes to the fray as the last shadow dissipates user Val's maul. He raises Dumdrengi just above his shoulder' ready to swing at the first threat, "If yer magic won' work, maybe Dumdrengi will? Seem t'have a likin' fer spirits an' demons."

Aiden straps his shield to his arm and interposes it between Jex and Vark, leaving enough room for the spell to function. Just as the half-orc's spell completes, the stasis of the undead presence explodes into growth. "It's starting again!"
A shadow creeps into view, and Bründir rushes forth. With a snap, he whips Dumdrengi down, but its light must have foretold doom as the shadow slinked away from the swing. The dwarf puts his shield forth, hoping something about these spirits was solid enough to be stopped, "What's it ye want? What're ye? Who sent ye?!"

As the shadows once again start to pour out from the mask, Vark begins trying to scramble backwards to get out of their necrotic reach. “I-I-I don’t know! I can see the ench-chantment that we already knew was there but I can’t figure out why it’s doing this! Jex we... we might need to try and break it!”
Jex waits patiently as Vark casts his spell on the item, scimitars raised and looking carefully around. As Aiden shouts his warning, he reflexively slashes out, weaving to the side as he cuts into one.
He eyes Vark carefully. "I don't think so Vark. The mask is mine, we will free it of this some other way."
Chasing another shadow wich proved to be particularly slithering Thurston looks back to Jex. “ Well we can’t spent the whole day doing this, and it could be particularly dangerous if it happens in the middle of a combat. You should get rid of it Jex, one way of another. “ he says to his friend.
Jex grips the mask closer to him, mouth open as he looks at Thurston in disbelief and pain. He shakes his head slowly.
"You too?"
He backs up.
"You are all fools, too quick to resort to blunt violent solutions. These are shadows, we just need to hold them off until daylight, then maybe we can break the curse before they come back tomorrow."
Aiden looks at Jex, confused. "Thurston and Valaith, you should go with Jex and walk out of the mountain shadow. The rest of us can pack up camp and meet you in the daylight."

“Right, daylight... uhm.” He looks around, trying to gauge how long it would take to get out of the shadow. “Jex, what if we fly up out of the shadow? It’ll be quicker!”
" The day you start to understand that you have people now that actually care about you, you could start to abandon that victim play that doesn't really suit you. Go!" he says "Try that at plain sunlight, I am sure that Aiden can remove the curse with Thor's aid but I would keep an eye open the next day in case that curse returns.."
As soon as Jex consents, Vark begins a primordial incantation under his breath. A gale begins to whip around the pair and Vark's voice takes on an echo as the wind joins in the chant. With a final phrase the spell is complete, and Jex begins to feel weightless. Its gentle at first, but there is no time to waste on letting him acclimate to the new mode of transportation. Vark rockets straight up, hooking an arm around Jex's and dragging the assassin with him.
Jex grimaces. "Indeed"

Halts, but doesn't dissipate. Small victories.
