"Yes and he has asked that I help you," Gabe repeats with seemingly infinite patience. "Sir Marcellus is a 'single man' leading an army, but he won't arrive for another three weeks or so. It's not a particularly large army either, but Baron Reventlow has some... nasty friends. Are you familiar with gnolls? Well, you will be soon enough..."
"Gnolls you say? That Baron has hired gnolls to fight for him?! I swear to Thor, each thing I heard from this man makes me want to hit him harder!! "he takes a few steps around the room, the rest of the conversation with Gabe, or even the man himself, forgotten for the moment.
"Nasty, vicious creatures the gnolls. I ´ve ought them before " he tells to his friends " and they are fast and strong, barbaric, They used to eat the fallen, no matter if they were their own or don't. They look like... "he adopts a crunchy position and opens his mouth leaving his tong to one side for a second " They are like humanoid stray dogs and they stink. We will need to warn our people about them. They are fearsome adversaries yes, but they can be defeated. I've done before. "
He turns his attention to Gabe again.
"So.. this information could be useful indeed. Three weeks hmm?.... " he adds pondering, looking Gabe from top to bottom as if he was wondering what to do with him " And you say that you offer this help just because Vark asked for it? Tell ke. What is going to cost him?"
Gabe chuckles in response to Thurston's pointed question.
"Nothing so transactional, I'm afraid. He wanted us to get to know each other better and I decided to indulge him. Anyway, the word is out about Sheercleft, so it wouldn’t hurt to find a few hundred more friends who can fight and take orders. As for Marcellus... you’re going to have to kill him. He’s coming for you personally and walls won't stop him."
“Coming for me? You do seem to know this person. Do you think that if we do engage in a honor duel it could prevent the fight among the soldiers? I doubt if the gnolls would honor such an agreement but…”
"Sir Marcellus considers himself an honourable man, but he does not consider you, the Acharnost, worthy of honour. He's not after you specifically, Thurston," the man explains, gesturing briefly to the Norscan, before casting his hand wide towards everybody in the room. "He wants all of you dead. To agree to such a duel would legitimise you as peers and then all of the ordinary rules of chivalry and warfare would apply. As far as Marcellus is concerned, he's marching up here to put down an uprising of separatist rebels. There will be no quarter for you or any that follow you."
Bründir paces as Gabe lays out the situation. His good eye kept vigil on this strange newcomer like a wolf sizing possible quarry. Once the assessment of Sir Marcellus' intentions comes about, he abandons his personal overarching and moves to the large table in the study. He takes a few minutes to sort the books, pages, maps, and general clutter to give himself space. "Seid, we need word t'Khaz a Gungron, and Hyranataar. They're friends now, an' we can offer in return. Got any ideas how t'get a message quick? Anythin' worth sendin'll take a week or more t'get 'ere."
Thurston's account of gnolls left a sickened pit in Bründir's stomach. He never thought to face things more barbarous than Goblins. "Thurston, Aiden, can ye work with th' garrison t' help'em expect what's comin'? Good lads, but they're used t'little bastards in mines an' bandits on roads."
The dwarf leveled his gaze at Gabe now. There was a mix of trust and apprehension about him. He looked like flowers on a grave. "Gabe, if that's really yer name, sent by Vark fer us. I take what ye say as truth, but I also take there's things missin' as ye please. What else can ye tell about Sir Marcellus or 'is army?"

"First, they let Sheercleft to its fate when the goblinoids and the maginobi conquered it, then they try to claim it now that it is free and they send a warrior who has done a dark pact with some creature... wait..." Thurston starts to open his eyes wide as the light starts to come to his mind now that he has said the words out loud " wait wait... they do not let the village to its fate when the goblinoids conquered it... they were using them! You said there are manigobi on their court... and they were here pulling the strings!! That is what this is all about, they do not care about the city or some "rebels" they want what they wanted in the first place... " he turned towards Gabe " they want what is was buried beneath the city. They want you"
The rhythmic staccato of Gabe's slow clap fills the library.
"More and more I understand what Vark sees in you, Thurston. It's truly a sight to behold how all the pieces fall into place in your head."
"As for you, Lord Halfshild," he adds, turning back to Bründir, "I told you three things that you didn't know before. Nevertheless, that doesn't change the fact that you won't get ice in the burning heat without elemental magic, but that you knew already, of course."
"But you are free now"Thurston says "You used Vark to free you. Not a very polite thing to do now that you mention it.Wanted to tell you about it since it happened. I am pretty sure that if you had asked for it the boy would have done it by his own will. You want something you ask for it. You don't go possessing other's people bodies to do your bidding. Not again. Not to him not to anyone. I hope I made this point clear. Now. Are they any real threat to you? I doubt it but if there is any mean, any witchcraft they can go and use to try to trap you or put you under their control, better tell us now so we can destroy it and prevent them to use it. Perhaps this way they lose interest in Sheercleft and leave the people live in peace. They had been through too much... and they will have enough fighting for survive in the future."
Bründir shook his head as he sketched on the back of the sheet from his dream. A charcoal stick was handy, so he found himself making a small circle, then several branches out. This was the beginnings of a battle map made real before his eyes. "More to it than that, Thurston. Sure, they want what's down there, but they want us too. We made'em bleed, an' this's much 'bout that, too." The dwarf beamed a smile at Gabe, wagging his simple stylus, "Won' do, will it, lettin' simple folk make ye look a fool?"
Gabe's remark about Elemental magic took a moment to sink in as Bründir mulled it over. Elements...four elements...Matthew was a fiend, right? Sounds like fire. What's the opposite of fire? Gabe nods slowly with a cunning smile as Bründir lays out the Baron's motivations for Thurston.
"...and the penny drops. As I mentioned; it's personal. Sir Marcellus has been ordered by barional decree to execute every last one of you and he plans to carry out those orders with extreme prejudice. If you remain the guardians of this village, then this will not be the last threat that you face and these are the kinds of things that you will need allies to inform you of. At Morloth it was the Marquise, yesterday Vark received intelligence from Gareth Jones and today it is me. In the future, you will need to grow your repertoire of contacts and perhaps even employ your own spies. You're only as good as you are informed. As for this little lesson in arcana 101; for that you have your wizard here," the man tells Bründir, gesturing to Seid as somebody who can explain the interactions of elemental energies.
"Oh, and Thurston," Gabe continues, "ask Vark if I've ever inflicted anything on him without his consent and you will find that the answer is no. You are indeed correct; when asked his assistance is given freely. That is exactly what happened and why we maintain a mutually beneficial relationship to this day. Perhaps you should have discussed the matter with him before acting on assumptions, hm? I don't appreciate being accused of what amounts to ****; I'm no azata and nothing if not polite. I make deals, which all parties agree to the terms of. I have no need for something so uncivilised as brute force."
Aiden notices a pale red glow flicker momentarily in Gabe's eyes as he dresses Thurston down.
Seid glares at Matthew for several long moments as his true identity is revealed; Seid had already guessed, but it was good to have confirmation. He swallows down the pride that threatens to undo all of this and instead turns towards the dwarf warrior... Brundir. "Ice or water would be your counter to fire and the reverse it also true. Air element is the counter to earth element and earth the counter to air. At least as far as the basic elemental circles are presented and understood."
The door opens as Val's large form pushes into the room, looking about curiously as the others stand around a strange man. "Who is this?"
"Valaith!" Gabe exlaims in greeting, whirling around to face the goliath. "So good of you to join us. Let's get the repeat questions out of the way, shall we? I'm Gabe, Vark asked me to help you all while he's away visiting Endelfjell."
