While he was young, he encountered a wizard at a local fair who mentioned to his parents that he seemed to have a spark of magic. He was quickly shipped off to be apprenticed to Ilspeth, a wizard who took on a host of apprentices and orphans to aid her in her works. Corwin was a favorite student for a time, having a gift for knowledge matching any of the other students. When it came time to really study the rudiments of magic, disappointment struck. Corwin's abilities were just not cut out for rigorous magical practice. He stayed on, his academic abilities proving still useful, and he found a niche being brave enough to enter dangerous old places for Ilspeth and her colleagues. He is now out on his, own, having worked off his obligations and is out trying to see the world on his ow, and maybe learn how much truth there is in the stories of Varisia.
