I am new to the online DnD but long time player and DM haven't played since 3.5 but know all the new rules it would truly be an hour to join you! Will to fill out any class you need as I love playing class or race :) The only thing is I have no idea how to find a group on this app any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
In the play by post forum at the bottom right there is a drop-down menu that lets you filter based on tags. You can choose Recruitment filter and click filter and it will bring up every thread that is recruiting. You can post your character ideas following the format chosen by the recruiter. Alternatively, you can post that you are seeking a group and so forth there.
Which means you can edit this thread and change it from public tag to recruitment tag.
What they said! Also, if a thread is marked "closed" or "private" it is generally absolutely closed. But SOMETIMES a DM who has tagged their thread "public" is open to a private message asking if the game is accepting waitlist applications or even active character applications, even if they don't have the "recruiting" tag set. I'll generally do that with my games bc I remember well what it was like as a new player trying to actually find a game that was recruiting. It seems to go in waves and cycles, though. so don't give up hope if it seems like a sry dpell at first.
===***===
To give you a little more detail and some useful info, the general custom is that a DM will create a "recruiting" thread for their game and then select players from that to invite to a (usually private) "game" thread. Sometimes. though, as I've said, the game thread is left open for waitlist applications or the game is opened up for applications again if a player has to drop out. In that case it's most often done by the DM reactivating the recruiting thread, but sometimes the actual game thread is opened up as "public" instead. In that case it's generally not considered good form to drop your character application into the middle of the game text; pls DO send a PM to the DM instead. ;-)
In the recruiting threads, one common way of proceeding is to ask the person who's applying to use the dice roller function in these forums to roll up a set of ability scores and then post whatever basic info the DM asks for about a character with those scores. You can roll the dice in the forums by clicking on the black box that looks like the "3" on a d6, all the way to the right in the row above where you're typing the post. When you click this it will give you three tabs, and ability scores is the one on the right. It gives you a basic 4d6 drop lowest array; and you can set it to reroll ones once, always or never. DM will usually tell you which in the recruiting thread; if they don't most usual standard is to set it to drop ones once, but its always a good idea to check with them to make sure. Most people make a post with the ability scores first to "hold their place" and then another one with the character info.
THIS IS IMPORTANT. YOU WANT TO DO IT THAT WAY; AND WHEN YOU POST YOUR ABILITY SCORES IN THE FIRST MESSAGE, YOU WANT TO HIT 'QUOTE" BELOW THAT POST. THAT WILL PUT YOUR ABILITY SCORES IN THE NEXT MESSAGE YOU WILL BE CRAFTING YOUR CHARACTER IN, ...
IN A QUOTE BOX.
This is absolutely critical. For any message you put dice rolls in (and you can use that function to roll your character's dice throughout the Play by Post game). IT'S FINE IF YOU ARE JUST ROLLING TO HIT AND WON'T NEED TO EDIT THE MESSAGE; BUT ANY TIME YOU EDIT A MESSAGE THAT HAS DICE ROLLS IN IT THAT AREN'T IN A QUOTE BOX, AND THEN HIT 'POST' AGAIN, YOU RISK THE WEB SITE REROLLING THE DICE AND THEN FLAGGING YOUR MESSAGE WITH SOMETHING ON THE ORDER OF "THIS MESSAGE HAS POTENTIALLY MANIPULATED DICE RESULTS."
In other words, accusin' you in a big pink/red banner pasted prominently on the top of your message, of cheatin'. When nine times out of ten you just forgot something in your message and wanted to fix it. You can sometimes get away with it for single rolls like "to hits" where you only need to edit once and you cross your fingers not to get flagged. But definitely in a post where you need the dice rolls first, like character creation, that's the best and safest way to do it.
Note that posting in an ongoing IC thread about being interested in joining is a very quick ticket to being Blocked by most GMs. As OC said a Private Message gets much better results.
This was super helpful ! I have some characters made I just didn't know ( If Dms would allow making characters that many not fit an already formed group). I only have the free version so I don't have access to all the content just the bare bones, do you thing this will be a problem? I know all the basic rules etc just didn't buy all the expanded and new content not sure if this will prevent me from joining games. I have literally made characters to play campaigns solo with me Dming and playing LOL.

I ran games on here for the first two years with just the free version. You'll be fine.

Greatly appreciated! Are most campaigns pay to play here?
Randy
Most campaigns are free to play.
