Seeking two 5th level adventurers to join a campaign in progress! Dragon fire threatens to consume Faerûn! Do you dare oppose the Cult of the Dragon and resist the might of Tiamat, Queen of Dragons?
Read through the rest of this post thoroughly, and if you are interested, follow the instructions to apply.
About The Adventure:
- Setting: The Forgotten Realms (Faerûn)
- This adventure is equal parts roleplay, combat, and exploration.
- Hoard of the Dragon Queen is a half-length campaign. Games of this length typically take 2-3 years in this format. Please do not apply if you believe there is a chance that you cannot commit to this length of time.
- You only need to commit to Hoard of the Dragon Queen. I do plan to roll forward into Rise of Tiamat, its sequel campaign, but you do not need to commit to the entirety of the Tyranny of Dragons campaign.
- We are still using the 2014 ruleset in this adventure.
About The DM & House Rules:
- I currently run two other campaigns on D&D Beyond, and have 8 years of experience DMing in person, online, and on D&D Beyond. I have run PbP adventures that last a few months, some that have been ongoing for years, and some that have fully completed after several years. Feel free to peruse my other campaigns if you would like to get a feel for how I DM!
- My typical pace is to post resolutions and progress the campaign once per day.
- I want PbP to be simple and flow easily. To accomplish this, I do not use grids, and I use grouped initiative to reduce the need to wait on players to post in a specific order. Maps may be used, but they are strictly for visuals.
- I love variety, so I do not use any averages. All health and damage is rolled, for both players and monsters. All of my rolls are tracked, in case questions or concerns arise. When you apply, please send me a PM that includes the word “Parnast” to ensure the player I select is attentive to others' posts and reads them thoroughly.
- Characters can die in my campaigns. Though it has not happened often, I do not fudge rolls. Reckless actions (i.e., charging headlong into an army) do have realistic consequences.
How To Apply:
- If you are any less than absolutely certain that you can commit to completing this adventure (a period of a several years), please do not apply.
- If you have played or DMed Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Rise of Tiamat, or Tyranny of Dragons before, please do not apply.
- Rolling for stats is preferred, but Standard Array and Point Buy are also accepted for determining ability scores. See below about guidelines on rolling.
- Reply to this thread or send me a PM with your application. Please include the 1) race/class you would like to play, 2) a short background summary, and 3) your method of determining ability scores (include rolls if rolling).
- All content used must be available to you through D&D Beyond. No Unearthed Arcana or homebrew will be accepted.
- If you are rolling for stats, those rolls must be made here or in a PM. Re-rolling your array will only be allowed if there are no ability scores above 13. There are no other exceptions. Rolling can result in some epic stat arrays, so there must be some risk to this method. If you are not comfortable with that risk, please use the Standard Array or Point Buy. To make those rolls, use [ roll ] 4d6dl1 [ /roll ] (without the spaces). Do not re-roll 1s. I don't know if people do this accidentally or if they do it to try and sneak it by me, but it happens a lot. I do examine all rolls.
- Your character's backstory can be as light or heavy as you would like, but I will be working with you to integrate your backstory to the setting of this campaign, so be open to adjusting bits and pieces.
- To help ease your character into the story, your backstory should allow for three things:
It is recommended that your character be associated with one of these factions. If you are not familiar with any or all of these, that is okay. There will be plenty of time to ask questions and figure out which one makes the most sense (or if none of them make sense) if your application is accepted:
The Harpers
The Order of the Gauntlet
The Emerald Enclave
The Lords’ Alliance
The Zhentarim
Your character will begin the campaign at the Carnath Roadhouse, on the road between Waterdeep and Neverwinter. Their initial hook into the adventure will be as a representative of their faction, sent to assist The Harpers and the Order of the Gauntlet in their investigation into the Cult of the Dragon.
Your character should be ready and willing to join a party of adventurers. If your character is not ready and willing, then you as a player should be ready and willing to find a reason for them to be ready and willing.
Acceptance Criteria:
- The application process can take quite some time. I will post here when a decision has been made and recruiting has been closed. There is no timeline - I put a lot of work in my PbP campaigns, and I will ensure that we have a group of players who matches that effort and can create an incredible story together. I look for the following:
- Attentive. Players should fully read and be attentive to the posts of the DM and other players.
- Effort. Players should put thought and effort into as many of their posts as possible.
- Note-takers. Players should take notes in whatever format works best for them. You will want to remember details that happened 30 minutes ago for your characters, but several days/weeks ago for you.
- Reliable. A posting history is not required, but if I can see that you have stuck around in long-running campaigns on this site, it will certainly be in your favor. I do examine posts from other games to help assess how much effort players put into their posts and how well they get along with other DMs and players.
I will update the thread here when a decision has been made (so if you do not see a message from me saying the table has been filled, feel free to apply). If you've read to this point and are interested in joining, thanks and happy gaming!
Hi, I am very interested in joining. I haven't played Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Rise of Tiamat, or Tyranny of Dragons before. I have participated in a number of pbp here and also a handful on discord. "Parnast"
As you said a party already exists, can you share what the existing player characters are? That will help determine what races/classes I would want to be and fit a backstory to that and your requirements.
Hi! I would like to be part of your campaign and already have 3 ideas for my character, but I would like to know a little bit more of the party composition (I don't want to overstep on someone else's roll within the party) and races (for extra languages).
One is a Dragonborn Sorcerer (draconic origin), a Half-orc Fighter (champion because is the only one I have) and the last is a Half-elf Rouge (thief because is the only one I have).
Also, how much money would my character star with and would I get any magic item?
Super interested and definitely able to commit to sticking around for a year or two; it's the daily posting thing that might be a barrier and I try and be upfront with DMs about that whenever I apply. I'm using a public internet connection and have a sporadically intense life and neuroissues. I've found that I CAN generally commit to posting at least once a week and usually more, unless the life goes crazier than usual -- see sig for the threads I've been a player in (including two games set in the Realms, so I'm basically familiar with the essential concept behind all the groups you mention except the Order of the Gauntlet.
If the posting frequency thing is not an absolute deal breaker, I'm definitely interested enough to drop in a stat array here -- also have a general concept of an Emerald Enclave type who's not only their faction's representative but has some personal reason to oppose Tiamat's plans. Let's see what we get, but given my character likings some ideas are starting to roll around re. various Feywild-themed subclasses of ranger, barbarian, rustic bard, whatever ... maybe even a blood hunter if I'm feeling particularly dark.
Ability scores: 12121013129
As far as the rerolling 1's, the ability array gives that as one of the three standard options you can select ... reroll ones never, once, or all the time ... so it could well be accidental. In fact the only reason I mention it is to pass on the info to whoever might read this thread. :
Other players: if you didn't know this before ... the ability score roll is the third tab in the popup menu you get when you click the basic 'dice rolls' icon above the box you're typing your post in (it's the black square with 3 white dots on it in the pattern of a '3' on d6).
When you click on that tab, you'll get a popup with two dropdown menus. The second one is the one we're talking about, and it defaults to 'never reroll ones'. But IDK if it will change it back to the default if you accidentally change it, so do double check.
Related advice: once you've rolled your ability scores, QUOTE YOUR OWN MESSAGE CONTAINING THOSE ROLLS BY HITTING 'QUOTE' IN THE LOWER RIGHT CORNER OF THE MESSAGE. IF YOU DO IT THAT WAY, THAT WILL USUALLY PROTECT THOSE ROLLS FROM BEING REROLLED IF YOU SHOULD HAPPEN TO EDIT THE MESSAGE. WHICH IS A PAIN BECAUSE THE FORUM WILL THEN FLAG THE MESSAGE AS IF YOU'D DELIBERATELY CHEATED. BUT IF YOU JUST USE THE 'QUOTE BOX' COMMAND (IT'S THE " SYMBOL IN THE UPPER LEFT AS YOU'RE TYPING, IT WON'T PROTECT THE ROLLS NECESSARILY. AT LEAST, i'VE HAD THEM REROLLED WHEN I DID IT THAT WAY; BUT NEVER YET DOING IT BY POSTING THE ROLLS AND THEN QUOTING MY OWN MESSAGE.

1) Race/class -- Race will be either firbolg or half-elven (with your permission, a half grugach with a slightly conflicted backstory, perhaps trying to prove themselves or gain acceptance in wood elven society. In that case, would also like to ask if you're comfortable using the variant half elven rules from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything to give some actual mechanical distinctness to this character as compared to a generic 1/2elf). As far as class goes, definitely going with an Emerald Enclave type; and can offer two possibilities based on the needs of current party since both are appealing pretty equally at this point. If you more need a healer, then a Circle of Dreams druid; otherwise, a Fey Wanderer ranger.
2) Background summary: I LOVE backstory and RP, so these are just very rough outlines of the direction I'd like to develop this character in; and definitely open to working with you to integrate i into the campaign. See above if I go with a 1/2 wood elf. For the firbolg, I'm not quite as sure but I'd like to work in something similar ... something in this character that makes them a bit of a misfit or outcast among firbolgs that they are trying to overcome and win acceptance from their people.
3) Stat method: Forum 4d6, never reroll 1s.
EDIT: Slightly modifying that. UNLESS the current party really needs a healer-type, leaning towards the ranger as being more versatile and as having pretty good healing magic in their own right if a specialist isn't needed. And I do think a half-wood elf of the background I'm leaning towards would have more of a reason to leave their native society than a firbolg would, so I've provisionally created a character sheet for that build at Saellyn Nabatani (WIP)

I can roll again if you want, and hope that the rolls are as good (or better) than before.
QV my advice above. If you posted those rolls, and then edited and reposted the original message rather than quoting it and then editing, it most likely did reroll them even though you didn't mean it to.
It's basically ... I think ... because the DICE ROLLING CODE is in the original message, and can get re-parsed when you edit and then post again.

==== UPDATE ==== "Parnast" Race/Class: Tiefling Warlock OR Hill Dwarf Artificer
(Will make these more in depth if I am selected) Tiefling Warlock backstory: Dravorn learned early that power opened doors, and that a Tiefling without it was just another outcast. Betrayed by the thieves’ guild he once served, he swore vengeance and struck a pact with a being who promised him the strength to never be powerless again. Now a rising agent within the Zhentarim, Dravorn uses infernal magic to enforce the Black Network’s will, trading fear for respect.
Hill Dwarf Artificer backstory: Berrik Goldthane was born the son of a guild smith who forged armor for the city guard. While others trusted in steel and muscle, Berrik trusted in invention — building clockwork tools and rune-bound weapons that could turn a single soldier into a walking fortress. After one of his creations helped save a Lords’ Alliance envoy from an orc ambush, Berrik was offered a place among their ranks. Now he serves as both engineer and warrior.
Born to two "adventurers" in Shadowdale who settled way to easily into bucolic farm life, Comira received martial training from her mother, but had a vision of Llira that caused her to cling to the cause of joy. Leaving her home, she found herself working for the Harpers from her father's old contacts, and has found her way across the realms on their business.

Backstory: Orphaned at a young age, the child who would become Kimryn was adopted by a secluded monestery hidden high in the mountains. From the silent, disciplined masters, Kimryn learned not only the devastating forms of their martial art but also the profound spiritual philosophy of balance and discipline. Her quiet life of devotion was shattered when an extremist militia, led by a disgraced former monk, launched a brutal attack, slaughtering most of the community while Kimryn was away protecting a nearby village. Returning to devastation and being wrongfully blamed for knowing of the attack, Kimryn was forced into exile, her faith shaken but with fighting skills honed by tragedy, now dedicating her travels to protecting the innocent and seeking a new path to enlightenment.

It's ok. I've seen that mistake sometimes here, so it makes sense that you thought this was the case.
Anyway, for my character ideas, I'll post the links for their sheets (with the og rolls that changed for some weird glitch or something) and a small description of their concept.
-Dragonborn Sorcerer (draconic origin): https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/80588340 Godfrey Drystan is more of a scholar from The Harpers. He is a man of books and thinks that most problems can be solved through thinking and conversations, altough he tends to keep to himself, he isn't the best at social events (is kind of akward and can talk your ear off if he thinks that you have the same interests he does), but with time (in the game) would learn to comunicate better and want to stay in the party. Full backstory in the works.
-Half-orc Fighter (champion because is the only one I have): https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/40659803 Khaddim Frodde is a mercenary from The Zhentarim. Your tipical rough guy that is kind of a bully, but still has a little heart that with time (in the game) would open up and want to stay with the party. Full backstory in the works.
-Half-elf Rouge (thief because is the only one I have): https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/85074522 Garrett Donaghy is a mercenary from The Zhentarim. The more classic type of guy that is in it for himself, but would change in time (in the game) to be willing to sacrifice himself for someone else (the party). Full backstory in the works.
I would be interested in joining this campaign, having not played this campaign before. Definitely excited about submitting an application! I didn't see anything about specific class needs, so I will go ahead and work on one character rather than submit a whole bunch. I am though willing to adjust if there is some need for something else.

"Parnast"
Race/Class: Tiefling Warlock OR Hill Dwarf Artificer
(Will make these more in depth if I am selected)
Tiefling Warlock backstory:
Dravorn learned early that power opened doors, and that a Tiefling without it was just another outcast. Betrayed by the thieves’ guild he once served, he swore vengeance and struck a pact with a being who promised him the strength to never be powerless again. Now a rising agent within the Zhentarim, Dravorn uses infernal magic to enforce the Black Network’s will, trading fear for respect.
Hill Dwarf Artificer backstory:
Berrik Goldthane was born the son of a guild smith who forged armor for the city guard.
Comira, Half-Elf Paladin 2/Bard X of Llira.

Name: Kimryn
Species: Human
Class: Monk 4 - Pestilent Haze /Cleric 1 - War

-Dragonborn Sorcerer (draconic origin): https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/80588340
Godfrey Drystan is more of a scholar from The Harpers.
-Half-orc Fighter (champion because is the only one I have): https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/40659803
Khaddim Frodde is a mercenary from The Zhentarim. Your tipical rough guy that is kind of a bully, but still has a little heart that with time (in the game) would open up and want to stay with the party. Full backstory in the works.
-Half-elf Rouge (thief because is the only one I have): https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/85074522
Garrett Donaghy is a mercenary from The Zhentarim.
