Silverlining begins to bob and weave through the barrage of divebombing birds. He looks around for cover and begins to move towards the gate (where it looks like there are a couple of towers?) He tries to pull a villager or two with him as he makes for the shelter but is hit HARD twice and is knocked out before any progress to safety is made.
(ooc - check HP, char sheet says max 11. If you have more than 0, one thing happens if less, another )
You are looking at the character sheet before the discussion of MEP-RU and abilities. When I reworked Silverlining with the adjusted abilities, his CON went down to 10 (+0) on HP. So Monk class lv 1 is D8.
You see Silverlining get hit several times, one of them in the head and somewhere near the gate you think he falls. Cannot be sure unless you are head that way yourselves.
(Here is some loot that we can revisit later. I am posting it so I dont forget. It assumes a quick pat of the bodies and not a proper search. If you plan on a proper search and not going to the grotto or crystal first let me know. )
Silverlining find on his zombie: 10 gp, a necklace of animal teeth, a signet ring (5 gp)
Vespera finds on hers: 18 cp, a platinum coin wrapped in a crude map, a two-headed copper coin
Manny finds on the skeleton: 15 gp, a flask of wine, a pair of dice
{ Was especially late getting on today after a long call with my sister. Now the DM has gone to bed. I'll quote what I'm responding to as I catch up.}
Vespera keeps everything she quickly finds on the zombie she destroyed (recorded on character sheet). HARKNAIL has no objection to her collecting things. As she pockets the platinum piece, she comments to herself, "Helping others can be more profitable than I realized."
(OOC - have any of you read the Chronicles of Amber (novel) or dabbled in Monte Cook's Numenera ? I plan to introduce things from both, so I am asking)
(OOC I've heard of the Chronicles of Amber, but never read it. I backed Monte Cook's Numenera when it first came out, got a lot of the initial books, ran it for a couple of groups, before deciding that while the background was great, none of us liked the cypher system. I saw that Monte Cook's did a D&D 5e conversion of Numenera stuff, but I didn't get that.)
(ooc - I will assume Vespera will come to the Crystal since two have already decided on that first, so I will go to the next happening )
You are up the path and start heading East towards the Crystal. You pass a few dead bodies of undead. The villagers are taking care of a few dead of their own and treating the wounded. You are among the villagers now almost to the crystal when all hell breaks loose.
*splat, splat, splat* Feathers everywhere, blood and guts. You realize the sky has darkened in an instant. The splat, blood, guts and feathers belong to birds. The birds seems belong to insanity. They are not falling out of the sky, ohh no. They are diving into the ground, or rather trying to miss the ground entirely and dive into your brains or guts.
(roll me 3 x reflex saved vd DC of 15. If saved, no DMg, if not 1d4+1 (the 1 is necrotic dmg) (@Manny, you take no necrotic damage)
Its a slaughter, the birds keep suiciding, the villagers keep dying.
What do you do ?
Yes, Harknail was wanting to go to the grotto, but it wouldn't have Vespera go on her own. Crystal it is.
3 dex saves: 19, 22, 21 Vespera, being a rogue, is quick on her feet dodging things coming at her. Also Vespera is resistant to necrotic damage from being a Cthonic Tiefling.
You see Silverlining get hit several times, one of them in the head and somewhere near the gate you think he falls. Cannot be sure unless you are head that way yourselves.
Seeing one of the people with something like Harknail inside of it go down, Vespera heads in that direction. They are likely to be the best allies around her, so she tries to get him under some sort of cover before making an attempt to stabilize him.
{Don't know what rolls will be needed for getting under cover, but here's a medicine roll if she can do so: 18. Apparently HARKNAIL is consulting the AI database and coaching her how to to stop someone from dying.}
When you reach Silverlining, he is under a dead villager's body. (should be safe enough)
The villagers near you are sticking to the gate and walls. you think that the bird's assault has ended, but realize that while only a stray or two makes it this way, HUGE masses of them keep falling on the Crystal. (btw, the birds are mostly sea birds, a few small song birds i guess and ravens, but mostly sea birds, common on the coast).
You don't think there is anything you can do for the Crystal at this point. Going out into the birds would be suicide. (if you have a plan that contradicts this, let me know if not we continue)
After maybe a couple of minutes of this, you realize that this whole time a buzz in the air has been growing louder. It source the Crystal.
The Crystal you realize is not spinning anymore and is growing brighter. The buzzing STOPS. (Dexterity checks for Vespera and Manny, DC 13, if less you are temporarily blinded)
An incredibly bright light explodes forth from the Crystal with a *electric shockwave sound effect sound* (roll a CON check DC 11, if less you fall unconscious )
(you are with your eyes closed and head turned away if you made your DEX check, so you dont see it but) A wave of crackling light spreads in all directions from the Crystal followed by a *plop* *plop* *plop* from thousands of bird bodies falling dead everywhere.
(the blindness will start getting better in a few hours, will be almost fully gone after a long rest. If you failed the CON roll, you are out for a couple of mins, if not woken before that)
(now an important question. The plan in my head was get a body on the beach (not knowing about the crystal yet), go grotto, do some stuff (get to lvl 2), get out (has another exit), go help crystal, sleep off the blindness etc and start a new day. Now that said, shal I push you more forcefully where the plan is, or let you do what you want first ? I don't mind, I have the stuff fleshed out, but because it is fleshed out, you might get in trouble if you go places too early and if you do, please remember that you can always run away and come back.)
(So what will it be ? Shall i go more like go there now, or you rather go see stuff on your own ?)
(also, you would have realized by now I send PMs, so its not necessarily that the game has stopped, but rather I might be waiting for info from another player via PM before I proceed.
While on this topic, I like it and i think it works nicely on the long run, but if you want, I can post everyones stuff on the forum here for everyone to see. I will try to make a poll for it and you can vote.)
I can’t say where to go next, because I’m a bit lost as to what the situation is. Apparently I automatically missed the dex and con rolls (don’t have a problem with that), and am now unconscious for a bit. Is the character knocked out by the birds also waking up soon? Once we wake up are birds or undead still attacking. I’m feeling bad about how many villagers died, feels like we didn’t help at all 😞
I had wanted to go to the grotto first, but that decision happened while I was sleeping. I’ll catch up again tomorrow. Typing in bed right now.
(I am waiting on a PM from Character77006, because he needs time off for real life stuff. We will either be cleared to advance the story and drag him along, or if he requests it, we will pause for 2 weeks and take it from there.
If we proceed, I imagine Manny wakes Vespera up, she is not wounded. Both of them check on Silverlining, he is alive. Get him conscious and then its up to you how you get him healthier.
(nothing could be done about the villagers. its just how the story goes, illustrating how bad things have gotten and that they need stopping)
Now that said, shal I push you more forcefully where the plan is, or let you do what you want first ? I don't mind, I have the stuff fleshed out, but because it is fleshed out, you might get in trouble if you go places too early and if you do, please remember that you can always run away and come back.)
OOC how do we know we went the wrong way? It is a bit difficult to know what is a challenge and what is forceful stop? Being a warlock, if we are going the wrong way, my patron can speak to me and I can speak to Vespera and we can be changing direction to get on the correct path.
When the Crystals burst into light, Manny manages to close his eyes and turn his head quickly. A second later, the shockwave passes through him and then there is a silence for a second before the *plop* and *splat* of the falling birds pervades the air.
Manny opens his eyes and looks around. It is a horrible sight. Too many of the villagers lay on the ground unmoving. They are all covered with blood and guts. Some their own, most from the birds.
There is also a nasty stench from the birds' corpses. And a dark goo mixed with the blood.
Most of the villagers that are still upright are near the gate or walls nearby. They start to check on the people around them.
Manny decides to do the same. He sends his new friend the imp, invisible, to check on the downed people and guide him to the ones that can be saved, gaining time. ( imps name ?)
The nearest person is a villager, but he is obviously dead, several birds protruding from his back. But under the villager, Manny recognizes the dragonborn. The dragonborn has quite a few scratches, but two big nasty wounds can be seen as well. Manny is surprised the dragonborn is not bleeding out. He applies what he knows of medicine to stop the bleeding and bind the wounds, borrowing materials from the nearby villagers, who are doing the same for others. After he is sure that the dragon born will recover with rest and care, Manny straightens up and consults with his new invisible friend. The imp guides him to another person in need of help and then another.
Manny works tirelessly as if in a trance, helping person after person and the sudden quick flash of light, East to West.
Manny looks in that direction. He realizes that he assumed the crystal exploded. But it is there, unharmed, glowing and spinning again. Manny looks West. Several villagers are relaxing from their defensive crouches. A pile of bones, newly arrived from the grotto it seems, is smouldering on the ground. It looks like the undead are still coming from the grotto, but the Crystal is active.
Having a better vantage upright, Manny notices the form of the tiefling, together with several others , dragged to one side by the villagers. He asks and is told that those look to be stunned or just out of it, unconscious. Probably from the shock wave. Some of them woke up by themselves, some got woken by family or close friends, the others are left to rest for now.
Manny gets a bit of water and a rag, goes to the Tiefling and puts the wet rag on her forehead.
“Vespera is it ? Can you hear me ?”
The tiefling stirs. She mumbles something then opens her eyes abruptly. One of her hands shoots to Manny’s arm reflexively, the other is already drawing a dagger.
(Manny get a +1 to medicine for using it successfully during the afternoon)
The Crystal occasionally shoots another wandering undead coming from the West.
The villagers ask Manny and Vespera if they are able, to help carry planks and metal rods to the grotto’’s entrance and block it before nightfall. Manny thinks it's a good idea and helps.
Planks and salvage from the fallen airship are also used for the grotto. While on the beach, you and the villagers help the survivors there as well.
Silverlining along with all the other wounded is given a sip of Goodberry wine, regains consciousness, is on 1 HP, in a lot of pain but operational. The villagers refuse to let him participate in blocking the grotto.
(Experience comes from the GM, but the GM gets none if you don’t. Everyone advances to lvl 2 during the night.)
Its morning. The barricade on the grotto holds. The village gate holds.
(if i am not wrong, by the DnD 5e rules, everyone is on max HP after a long rest ?)
The villagers pass more Goodberry wine with breakfast.
People from the village talk with survivors from the airship. (any of you can talk and get info now)
(The ball is in your court)

Manny and his Imp head over to assist. Manny has nothing to help Silverlining, but can assist in providing anti bird bombing.
Instructs the Imp to provide overwatch and protect us 3.
OOC I will be really inconsistent the next 2 weeks with posting.
