As the others reveal a little more Gargan suddenly takes notice of the strange elf woman that had some how become a part of their group without question, studying her for a moment. Examining the Elf as they talk Gargan starts to get the feeling she seems familiar, something about the way she dresses perhaps? And where had Jack gone?
Not sure what the right skill is here so I'll make a roll then list my modifiers!
Wondering who this Elf lady was as well, Cloudfur steps up to her and waves at handful of grass in her face while muttering in Druidic. He then leans in really close to her.....and sniffs her before poking her with his staff. "Who are you? Perhaps the instigator?" and he squints his eyes at Not-Jack "you smell like magic...."
Elf Jack cringes and leaned back at first from the grass, but didn't seem all that bothered by it. It's only when he tried to lean in uncomfortably close that she frowns, pointedly puts up an intercepting hand to block him, and side-stepped the poking staff. "Hmph! First you assault me before an officer of the law, and then have the nerve to.. to call an instigator of all things?"She says pointedly, losing some of her nervous air for indignation. "And the names Evrae, by the way. Maybe before you start insulting and assaulting someone in the future you should start there? They just let anyone in the city these days." The last part is muttered as she looks away.
Noting the Dragonborn also giving her funny looks, she rolls at him. Jack -- the "real" Jack, despite being city born by the way she acted, dressed more like a northerner in thick furs and like. While there were some on the half-elf in the form of a cloak, the seemed to be there more for currently winters sake than a fashion choice. While not behaving like a shrinking violet she was taller than Jack by a few inches, though less developed in areas. But no matter how one looked at it(atm), the two were different people.
Perhaps Jack is still cowering beneath the table? But then many were escorted out of the nearby residence by guards. And there was the fact the message before had been taken by someone even without their being a reply back. So very strange...
"But I'll try to take the 'I smell like magic' as a compliment. Better than mudblood, at least... I guess..."Elf Jack lowers his gaze and get a far off look, seeming to remember an unpleasant moment. "Anways. Is there anything else we can do for you investigator?"She asks, genuinely showing a measure of regret in her words: probably from not being more help.
Elf-Jack cringes at the word 'elf' and chewed on her lip, but refrained from saying anything. "As I've already said, my is Evrae. Just Evrae. A-and no, I don't 'live' near here. I was out on walk about in the area when I heard the explosion." She explains and casts a glance at any covered or half-shielded down bodies if still about. "When I saw the aftermath, it's... it's like my body took over at that point. I tried to help as much I could. And when I saw these guys doing the same while others were still shock, I... I... I wanted to do more! Like them."She practically shouts near the end, then covers her mouth.
After a moment or two, she manages to squeak out a sorry and wave apologetically to others around. "In hindsight, I may have overstepped a little by just following along and not even properly introducing myself to them. T-though in my defense, its kind hard to find a moment for things like that when your suppose to be doing a little snooping for culprits."

Barnibus considers for a moment, and then presses further. "Where do you 'live' then? Why were you walking through here? How is it that everyone else that was 'walking through here' is dead, and you don't have a scratch on you? Something doesn't add up here. If you know something, now's the time to start talking."
The sergeant looks back and waves two more officers over. They flank the group, hands on their swords but keeping a little distance for now.
Jack bows her head and starts holding her arm. If she notices the wave or officers moving closer, the woman doesn't show it. "Nowhere.. technically. I've been staying with friends in the city for the most part, looking for work. Thought I might try my hand at adventuring, but... I'm green. And not many people back at the yawning portal have been up for taking me with them. Yet." She admits. "Doubt any of them even remember I asked." She mutters sadly under breathe. "B-but that's where I'm staying at the moment. My friend Sizan was willing to share his room there with me for a couple days at least."
Elf Jack finally looks up, and seemed shocked by some of the officers already surrounding them. "But honest, sir. I don't know what else to say about what happened. A-and its not like I was walking 'through here here' when it did. It was just my dumb luck I was a street over when I heard the explosion. I knew some magic too, to get me over quicker. Though I.. I doubt anyone can vouch for me. There was so much dust in the air for a while there, and so much going on." She admits, and then sighs and starts digging a hand through her hair. An innocuous act to some, but to the party one more reminiscent of Jack during the quiet moments when frustrated over something.
"I just wanted to walk the wards, and clear my head for a while."Jack admits then looks around. "Preferably some place I wouldn't get mugged, or things like this might happen. Talk about the worst luck."

"That's a sad story miss Evrae, i'm just recently employed with this lot meself, maybe Jack would bring you on as well, assumin' the Sergeant here doesn't find your soft elf hands there guilty of all that destruction back there" Kanus says to the young elf woman following her story, still oblivious to who she is, but not suspecting her of any wrong doing at all.
Still sure there is something he's missing but unable to put his finger on right now Gargan gives up examining the Elf woman as the situation seems to be getting out of hand. He says to Barnibus: "We don't know who this lady is no, but let us not presume her guilty!" Producing the necklace that they got from the boy Gargan holds it up for Barnibus to see, but not within reach for him to take. "Without the ladies help here we wouldn't have found the weapon used to carry out this attack. This necklace is almost certainly the source of the explosion, as I presume with your talents don't need me to tell you what this is no? We recovered it from a young boy who had picked it up in the aftermath of the attack after the lady here convinced him to tell us what he knew. Now I don't know about you good sir but I'm inclined to think that the boy is most likely not the perpetrator here, nor our new acquaintance."
With that he puts the necklace back into a pocket in his robes as if it is an item of no consequence.
Barnibus's eyes widen as Gargan speaks. He glances at the sergeant and nods, who in turn waves off the guards. Cromley steps forward with his hand extended. "Appreciating the information, I'm going to have to ask for that necklace. If it is as you say, then it is a key piece of evidence indeed. You'll understand the scrutiny - this is a serious situation here. Many people lost their lives - some of them quite young. It's very sad, and many people are going to want answers."
Cromley stands with his hand extended, looking Gargan directly in the eye (as is Barnibus). They seem satisfied with your story, though when it comes to the necklace it is clear that he is not really asking.
Gargan looks away from Barnibus coming to face Cromley and returns his gaze in equal measure. Without looking away he reaches into his robe and retrieves the necklace before holding it in the air before Cromley, but notably not placing it in his hand just yet. He then turns back to Barnibus and makes a request:
"Before I hand you this particularly deadly piece of arcana would you please indulge me with a gesture of trust. I don't doubt that you are exactly who you appear to be but given the circumstances and other recent events the only sensible course of action is to verify this. Might you both show me that your forearms do not have a certain mark upon them? From the little I understand of the mark my friend here uncovered I would like to be sure that your loyalties truly are to our fine city alone. I'm sure you understand."
Cromley scowls and points to the badge at his chest. "Well I'm not sure who you think you are, but this is here is all you need to see. Barnibus here is with the Order of Magists and Protectors - those that preside over the use and training of magic in the city. I assure you he can handle it. I'm not sure how you think that two men who showed up with an army of City Watch officers following them is on the wrong side of the law. But if you want to go to jail instead, that can be arranged immediately!"
Elf-Jack just looks back and forth between Gargan and Cromley with eyes growing wide from terror. Just as it seemed she might have a panic attack at any moment, she takes a deep breathe, and then lets it out. "There's really no need for all this. Please. Mr. Dragonborn, sir?" She starts making less than subtle motions for Gargan to handover the necklace to the "nice" investigator.

Completely unfazed by the aggressive response Gargan snorts a chuckle and a little whiff of acid escapes his nose in a puff of smoke. Shrugging his shoulders he gives in and lets out an weary sigh, handing the necklace to Cromley as he speaks.
"As I said Sergeant I don't doubt it one bit, but that's the thing with secret organisations that infiltrate society isn't it, you could be both no? Please take no offence, I am just a concerned citizen who had a fireball blow up outside his residence and is feeling rather peeved at present. I would very much like to see those responsible caught and brought to justice, the commotion and chaos has left me just a tad paranoid at present is all, I do hope you understand. Perhaps we can start again from a level footing Sergeant and offer you some assistance? Is there any way that we might be able to aid you in your investigation?"
Barnibus takes the necklace, casting a quick Identify to confirm it's capabilities. To Cromley he says "What they say does seem possible. This necklace is certainly capable of causing this sort of explosion and it appears to have one bead missing. As always I don't like to jump to conclusions and will see if we can verify its use and perhaps its source."
Back to you: "Thank you for this - understanding your position, I'm sure you'll understand our need to maintain authority and control in order to solve crimes like this. For certain few are more aware of the factions active in the city than we are. I appreciate your offer of assistance. I would expect Cromley here would normally tell you to stay out of it with some phrase like 'Trust in the Watch'. However, it is possible you could be of assistance".
Cromley gives Barnibus a scowling, sidelong glance at the obvious jab, and walks off to see to the scene.
Barnibus chuckles and then continues: "Obviously if you are to find out any additional information from anyone you speak to around here we would appreciate if it was shared with us. We don't know the cause or who did this yet and we try to speak to everyone but sometimes we aren't able to, and sometimes people are .. less forthcoming with the authorities than they might be with another bystander.
We do know that someone saw the gnome being chased by three pursuers, but we only count two of them among the dead so one must have survived and fled. They saw them running down the street from the east towards your tavern here. It doesn't seem like any of them saw it coming and it seems unlikely the individuals in pursuit would cause such an incredible explosion to stop the gnome when it obviously would have injured or killed themselves as well. We have this necklace, and I will speak to the boy to see if he knows anything more.
If you do find anything I will likely be here until the scene is cleared and otherwise can be contacted through the City Watch. Which brings me to my last point: You may not be aware but all arcane magic users are expected to register as a member of the Order if they are to remain in the city for an extended period of time. If your knowledge of the the arcane is strong enough to know what this item is I feel it likely that it's strong enough to make use of such abilities as well. If that is the case, please make sure this is something you attend to."
With that (unless you have other questions for him), Barnibus wanders off to join Cromley.
Elf-Jack breathes a sigh of relief, and then shoots the Tabaxi a worrisome look. "No need for all that, Mr. Cat. He's just passing along the way things are here." She bows first to Cromley, then again to Barnibus. "We'll keep that in mind, s-sir. Though I think after today, I might be better off moving on to Amn sooner than later..." A glance is given past the officers to the scene of the crime then back again. "N-no offense." Turning to Trollskull, Elf-Jack claps her hands together and starts to it. "So this is a tavern then?"
