Sel will also go home and visit her folks and try not to scare them too much with tales of what she's up to. She will also invite them to the opening night of Trollskull.
She'd like some magical stuff but doesn't have the cash currently.
After some conversation everyone splits up for the day and tries to take care of business.
Phaedra heads to some local temples to see blessings but is dismayed to learn that her request isn't as simple as expected. The priestesses of Waukeen and Tymora were more than willing to provide a blessing… for 100 gold. The priestess of Lliira that Phae spoke with was a human in her late 30s with flowers in her hair named Renate. Priestess Renate seemed cooperative but tended to talk in circles to the point that at the end of the meeting Phae honestly wasn't sure if Renate would come to bless the tavern or if she expected Phae to go bless the temple.
Selenae and Silver spend time going around talking to folks about how great the tavern will be and drumming up awareness. Both are quick to point potential staff back to the manor.
Selenae, being that she's not in a guild, doesn't have any built in contacts to reach out to like some of her friends. So she has to spend quite a bit of time around the docks before making any head way. Mostly just telling folks about the new tavern that's opening up but occasionally asking about the missing gold and stone. A few of the folks she speaks with knows of the missing gold and have various theories on where it's hidden but none of them were even aware of the stone or its significance. Eventually she does learn that someone else has been asking around about the same thing. Someone named Rongquan who owns a theater there in the dock ward.
Elon heads out to do the same but doesn't make it out of the alley before he's stopped by Vincent Trench. "We should talk." And with that the two head back to the private eye's office.
Kestrell armor conversation (not secret, just throwing it in the spoiler box to save space)
Kestrell soon learns that normal studded leather armor is 45 gold and armor of the quality he's looking for costs in the range of 1,500 gold. But after doing some digging around he's directed to a second hand shop that has "gently used" goods. He's shown a couple sets of armor that can be had for much less than usual… for a reason:
Ill-fitting studded leather armor - was originally made for someone bigger than Kestrell so it's heavier than it should be. Affect: Adds +1 to AC but subtracts 1 from strength. Cost 65 gold.
Studded leather armor of warming - was created to keep people warm when in the mountains. Unfortunately the mage who enchanted it messed up. If you're within 20 feet of an open flame the armor provides a nice bit of heat but as you get closer it gets hotter. If you're within 5 feet of an open flame the armor will start to burn you. Affect: Adds +1 to AC but you take double damage from fire attacks, including simply standing too close to a torch. Cost 50 gold.
Studded leather armor of un-hiding - mage was attempting to create an object to help others hide but got the spell wrong. This armor will turn itself to the inverse of the color of the nearest object. So if you're hiding against some green foliage, this armor will turn red. Affect: Adds +1 to AC but -1 to stealth checks. Cost 50 gold.
Well used armor: this armor was well made and used for a very long time by another adventurer. It is still capable of providing protection but it looks really rough. Affect: Adds +1 to AC but subtracts 1 from Charisma. Cost 75 gold.
"The first one here is 65 gold. These next two are 50 gold because of their… features, and this last one is 75 gold as no real warrior cares how his armor looks, only that it protects." says the human merchant named Dale. "Do any of these suit your desire and budget?"
Kestrell ice cream and cold storage conversation
"No, I'm not sure where White's new location is. It's rather strange, now that I think about it. That old location has been empty for years and has become bit of a landmark, but you never hear anyone mention where they moved to, just that they're no longer there." The man stands there with a confused yet in thought look on his face for a moment before shaking himself. "Apologies, what was your other question? Wizards? Oh for the magic cooling box! Yes yes. I would recommend speaking with an Elven mage by the name of Emma. She's doesn't have a shop but is usually found in at The Golden Horn Gambling House which is on Snail Street across from Niles Way. She's a bit different but if you can get her to agree to a project, she's affordable and very good. Oh, and don't mention that she's a mage in front of others. She tries to keep that secret."
22nd day of Marpenoth
Phaedra spends most of the day just walking around the city. First she heads to Lady Remallia Haventree who then sends her to Mirt who then tells her that Renaer would know best. Renaer, of course, wasn't at home but his butler points her to The Yawning Portal which is where Phaedra finds him, sitting at a table with Volo and Elminster having drinks as if that were perfectly normal thing to be doing. After working up the courage to approach the table, Renaer invites her to sit and before she knows it she's been there for two hours talking with the three men. None have heard of Fenerus Stormcastle but Renaer promises to ask around and let her know tomorrow. Phaedra ends up hanging out with this group for another hour before she finds a way to politely excuse yourself. As she leaves they again promise to look into it tomorrow.
Silver spends the day speaking with various contacts in the guild asking about the stone and about the recent murders. But things didn't go as smooth as Silver would have liked, with some of his associates becoming suspicious of him. He did learn that the stone is believed to be the key to a large amount of money and Xanathar wants it for two reasons, 1) because it's a large amount of money and 2) to keep any of their enemies from getting it and using it to grow stronger. Silver was not able to learn much about the murders. The one contact he spoke to who was even aware of them brushed it off as another Zhent attack.
Kestrell, not having any guild contacts to fall back on, has to do all the legwork himself. So he starts to go from food stand to food stand buying a little something at each and asking questions. By noon he felt "fuller than a tick on a big dog" and started hitting taverns. By the time he stumbles back to the manor he's learned:
Xanathar wants the stone as it'll lead him to the gold.
Xanathar did not kidnap Fenerus, but rather are looking for him.
Bregan D'aerthe is not well liked.
Selinae spends the day with her family trying to tell her folks about her new friends without telling them about all the dangerous adventures.
23rd day of Marpenoth
Kestrell is up early and heads back out to continue investigating. He again strikes out on finding out anything on Fenerus, but he comes across some former mercenaries in the 4th bar he visits and learns about Bregan D'aerthe. Bregan D'aerthe is a mercenary company made up of only full blooded Drow and they are, in fact, led by one Jarlaxel Baenre. And more importantly, they have a fearsome reputation of being extremely well equipped and good at their jobs and will regularly take (and complete) jobs others consider to be suicide. His new drinking buddies highly recommend staying clear of them.
While everyone else is eating breakfast, a messenger arrives and leaves a note with Vassa who reads it and addresses the party. "Got a strange letter here. Just says "I'm still waiting on you to come visit me at the theater as I asked. I know were Fenerus is." but it's not signed or anything. Got any idea who it's from?"
Interviews: As a result of everyone's efforts in attempting to recruit help for the tavern, nearly three dozen people show up early in the day to inquire about the job. All but Kestrell participate in the interviews, even Lif. Unfortunately, Lif's participation consisted of trying to scare each of the applicants. This resulted in lots of screams and several people just leaving. Kestrell shows back up shortly after noon just in time to participate in the last of the interviews. In the end the party manages to hire a couple cooks and several waitstaff.
Cooks: Darrak Caskbow & Luanda Cloudfang Waitstaff: Kelvin Southey, Margaret Fenwick, Fay Stonesworn, Ryia Boulderdown, Othedyn Uhmalvath, Katelyn de Mowbray
As the last of the interviews are happening Renaer enters the tavern and takes a seat away from everyone. Once the interviews are done he approaches Phaedra. "So we did some searching and none of our contacts even know who this Fenerus guy is, much less where he is. Sorry I don't have better news."
Selinae perks up as she hears the contents of the letter, " A man called Rongquan was asking about the same stuff as us down at the docks......he's involved with a theatre down there apparently..."
Talking to Kestrell about his discoveries, " So....these drow....are they linked to that one we met? And the murdery one? "
"The first one here is 65 gold. These next two are 50 gold because of their… features, and this last one is 75 gold as no real warrior cares how his armor looks, only that it protects." says the human merchant named Dale. "Do any of these suit your desire and budget?"
Kestrell looks over all of the armor. "That last one looks fantastic! I'll take it! I've got Charisma to spare, anyway! Will you take 50 gold and my chain shirt?"

Listening to Kestrell's plan, Phaedra jumps in. "I will come, just the two of you is a bad idea" she says with a smirk.
"Good thinking, this way we'll have more options if we get into trouble."
Kestrell takes a list sip of his drink then holds the door open for the rest of the party. "To the gambling house first? Serinade, I can show you the best ice cream joint, it's right on the way. They make a delicious fudge ripple."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Silver will remain silent through the interviews of the staff just look each one up and down as he takes in their answers trying to get a read on them. After they leave and the letter is read aloud he just shrugs "Guess we know where to now. I'll come as well."

Once the decision it made, Elon, Kestrell, Phaedra, Selinae, and Silver set off for the dock ward in search of the Seven Masks Theater and it's early afternoon by the time you find the place. Upon arriving you see that, from the looks of things, the theater caters to a lower-class clientele. You also notice a sign claiming ship captains and sailors are admitted for free. The front door to the theater is locked with a sign saying the next show starts "after evening meal". As you walk around the building you pass a few other doors that are locked as well before eventually finding one that opens directly to the side of and in front of the stage. You see actors and stagehands bustling about and two men arguing while a third looks on helplessly. On the stage itself, actors walk through their scenes and read their lines to a mostly empty theater. You see one person in the audience, a lone Shou man with a braided goatee sitting front row while smoking a pipe.
You're all still outside the theater, looking in through a door. No one inside has noticed you standing there, yet.
"Well, shall we enter?" Elon says as he enters the building. He makes his way in front of the stage stopping short of the center and pretends to be watching the actors.
