"Thank you Kanush. I'm ready if you all are." Tempest says nodding to the others as he hoists his pack over his shoulder and grabs his staff in the other. For the first time in a long time he felt he had a true purpose other than to survive. He was saved from the slavers, captured and managed to escape the yuan-ti in order to get to this point in his life. An optimal point to deal a fatal blow to the yuan-ti and allow for nature to once again thrive. He excepted his fate and simply looked forward at Rawk , but also through Rawk as if he could see their target far far in the distance and he smiled.
“Ah, of course, a highly technical ritual to learn immediately after imbibing. Beshaba rears her head again! ...It was a good drink though.”
Erros familiarity with Druidic magic from his years as a ranger allows him to follow along despite his tipsy state. Erro doesn’t understand the technicalities, but he is awed by the beauty of the ritual.
Erro eats more than his fill before they depart, enjoying the company and the conversation. “Let us pray the Maid of Misfortune has been sated already and that she stays here!” Erro was well acquainted with long and dangerous journeys into the unknown, and this is not what he spent his time thinking about. Instead he inwardly mourned the need to have to leave this place already, but he knew that this place would fade and would be no place to stay at all without action. It was just one more step that fate had ordained.
Rawk nodded and bobbed up and down nervously but excitedly. "That's right. I know the way like the back of my hand. It's quite easy to reach as long as we don't encounter any predators along the way." she says to the group. "Wish you could come with us Knaush, I'll see you when we return... tell my father... goodb... tell him I'll see him again soon." she says turning to Kanush and holds out her clawed fist for a fist bump. "Well said Erro.. isn't it? Let's go" and once they are all prepared will set off towards the exit of Dom-Gar.
Have eaten your fill, you prepare to depart. As you leave, you see Daner, Joran and a large group of warriors discussing tactics together. Daner salutes you on the way past. Near the central building, you can see sickly green smoke rising from the roof. Darion opens the door at your passing, wafting some of the smoke from his face "Good luck, my Tymora favour you!" he calls.
With that you pass through the protective wall of vegetation and return to the forest. For a while you are in the more cultivated area but soon you leave that, heading westward towards Dom-Sorn. It is the afternoon and the heat is oppressive, even to Rawk who is familiar with this jungle. Rawk will know that a heavy downpour will be due a little later. The sounds of the jungle crowd in; the rustling of trees, cries and calls from the multitude of creatures that live here, and the occasional louder, deeper growl or roar mercifully not close.
So, as a group decide what your roles are going to be - need a navigator at minimum, and decide if you are keeping watch, someone scouting etc. Every half day, the navigator will make a nature or survival check to make progress / not get lost (initial DC will be 15). Rawk knows this area well, so would have advantage. I will also make a random encounter check (d20). On a base roll of 16 or above, there will be an encounter. Good survival / perception etc rolls may modify what happens though...
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Erro will volunteer as a sort of forward scout, using his particularly high stealth rating. If he detects a threat he can attempt to warn the group, or at least potentially have the drop on any trouble. If this makes more sense as a rear guard, he will do that instead.
(OCC: Rawks should definitely be the navigator then. But not sure what to do for Ellis since Erro would be the better scout and not sure what role would fit with the skills Ellis is good with though.)
(Hmmm. Well, we’re going to get bored tromping around in the jungle, so an overland overture to inspire would be good, lol. But since it is MAGIC music in D&D, maybe it legit helps the party keep going strong?)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(I'll be the navigator.)
Rawk's demeanor changes as they clear the cultivated area and enter into the wild jungle. Her steps become softer and her head constantly swivels while here eyses look for any signs of danger. "It will rain soon. That will help cover our scent and noise but also aid any predators out there." she says quietly. He wings tuck in tight to her body and were it not for her movement, she'd blend in with the surrounding foliage perfectly. Using her axe periodically to clear brush and vines she'll carve their path through the jungle. Around hourly intervals she'll tell the group to collect and remain still in the cover of a tree or bush and fly up into the canopy to make sure of their course.
(Ellis and I can make camp and forage. Tempest can create a hidden campfire and make a mud hut/s using a combination of Mold Earth, Produce Flame, Druidcraft and Ellis's extra set of hands to place sticks and branches for supports. That is, if we survive long enough to make camp the first night ;) )
With Rawk's expert navigation skills, and good scouting from Erro you make good progress. The rain falls in a torrent, drenching everything but forewarned by Rawk Ellis and Tempest are able to create a temporary shelter that protects them from the worst of the downpour. It stops as suddenly as it began, as if someone had turned some magical tap to close it off and you are able to continue on, the jungle having that strange, clear, after-the-rain smell to it.
As the sun moves towards the horizon Erro with his great stealthy skills finds a large square stone tower in a clearing, about 50ft wide and about as tall. It looks old and weathered, but a strong wooden door attests to it's continued use. A newer stone statue depicting a large snake about to strike sits on a stone plinth, and from the rubble just visible in the shrubbery it clearly replaced something else that was shattered to make way for it. Nothing obvious is moving around, but you don't have much time to investigate before you head back as agreed.
Erro can feed this back, and Rawk would recognise it as Yuan-ti patrol fort - a building they had long ago stolen from the Dom-Rutan people. With her good nature check she would know the following things:
1) Making their way past the fort offers the quickest route to their destination - but are the Yuan-ti still there, or has it been abandoned for the moment with the ongoing civil war?
2) There is a longer alternative route that would take them safely around what he thinks are the common patrol areas, but this leads them through an area where a lot of the more dangerous predators often congregate in family groups (in game terms you will bypass this random encounter entirely, but the next random encounter roll will have a higher chance of triggering)
3)You could take a long way round and avoid both of these routes entirely, but this might add extra time to your journey (in game terms will require a harder survival check to make progress, potentially leading to lost time and more random encounter rolls).
Erro’s heart pumps as he returns to report the scene. The exhilaration is almost too much to handle.
He listens to Rawk explain the potential options. Erro unsheathes his rapier as she talks, sharpening it as he listens along.
”I’m never upset about the opportunity to skewer some unsuspecting snakes... but do you suppose that they will know where we are going if we let one of them get away? That seems quite risky... but gods know I don’t want to meet another pack of rippers. We have the element of surprise and they are in disarray. I say we investigate. I’m happy to keep moving whatever we decide!”
Ellis was thankful that he and Tempest were able to make that temporary shelter when it had rained but soon stopped. Then they found what seems to be a Yuan-ti patrol fort according to Erro and Rawk, thinking of what to do next. "We do need to get to the cliff as soon as possible. We have also fought Yuan-ti before, so at least we know what we're dealing with." he then said back, nodding in agreement.
Tempest listened quietly thinking over the options and nodding in agreement with the others he would stand and say, "I agree. If we can strike any blow against the yuan-ti, no matter how big or small, we should do it. If there appear to be too many to handle, I will lead them away in my beast form. Whatever we do we should be stealthy and catch them by surprise if possible. Stay close to me until the fighting begins, I can cover our approach." He was a bit nervous but knew this was the right path. If they all agreed he would cast Pass Without Trace to aid in their approach.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"We will spill yuan-ti blood then. I agree. Surprise and silence is the key to any ambush. We can take our time and position ourselves in the best way." Rawk agrees not wanting to sway the group one way or another. She was hoping they'd prefer to attack the yuan-ti watchtower but wanted that decision to be made as a group. Her father had always taken the decision for himself when they were on patrols so she wanted to try to give everyone a voice.
