Falaine looks into the darkness of the hole and has visions of the hyenas that attacked her. They're just memories coming back to her, but it startles her enough to make her back away form the hole.
Paren listens intently to the owl before turning his head back to the others. "Well, my friend here... you know, I don't know his name... anyways, he has a few answers for us. First off I believe you are correct Finan. It seems that Lugh and Mervielle may be two parts of the same being. He says that Lugh's voice is angry and seems to be fighting with itself. My guess is that Lugh is upset with the way Mervielle has gone about things recently." He reaches back and strokes the owl again. "Second, he confirmed that the elf we've seen around town is a part of this somehow. Apparently he was here digging with the animals when they made that pit." He then turns back to the owl.
"You know, I've never asked. What is your name?"

Finan gets the sense the the creatures that call this part of the forest home have been gone for several days now. He would get the sense that whatever is happening here is the cause for the departure. They didn't seem to leave in an immediate panic based on the remnants left behind. Any tracks he's able to spot seem to be at a more standard gate compared to that of animals fleeing.
He doesn't find much of note around the grove beyond the wilting plants and the hole that surely hadn't been there for more than a few days.
The owl hoots at Paren as it stretches out its wings.
"I've never needed one, Warden. I like the way Daais sounds though."
With a giant flap of its wings and its claws releasing, the owl takes flight high into the canopy above. As it leaves, the calm serenity it brough to Paren also slips away.
Looking into the darkness, Paren can tell that the hole was made by beasts of some sort clawing the earth away. It's hard to see how deep the hole is but it's deep enough that Paren can't see the end of the tunnel as it turns.
"Great, we are dealing with a god with a split personality," Tanni mutters to herself as she peers into the hole. She finally straightens up and glances at her companions. "So the elven bastard was here, searching for something. Falaine, Paren, do you have any idea what he could have been digging for? Treasure, artifacts? Shards?"
Jonathan ponders on this for a second. Daais... why does that name sound familiar? He somewhat regrets not paying much attention during his tutoring during his upbringing, like his siblings. It wasn't anything that interested him growing up, but he is seeing now that sometimes having an encyclopedic knowledge about people, places, and the like, could be useful; especially for one that is no longer safely at home and in a life of luxury.
"Whatever happened here seems to have happened slowly." Finan says as he looks over the various animal tracks. "See here? Where there are imprints left they are clear, and evenly spaced. I can't find any sign of animals rushing off in a panic."
He then looks up suddenly as Paren says goodby to the owl. "Wait, what did you just call it?"
The air in the cleared grove has a chill as the sound of rushing water provides a serene ambiance to the otherwise dreadful state of plant life. The water from the stream originates many hundreds of miles away to the east in the snow capped mountains. Even over this great distance, the water is cold to the touch. There's a faint divine magical essence to it that anyone proficient in arcana would pick up on. The water reminds you of the stories of the elder warden.
[Going back through old information, I found some points that the party brought up that were very on track toward things. Wanted to refresh your memory on things you've already discovered/discerned.]
Jonathan surveys the notes the group have brought together. "Hmm, well I'm no expert, but there is some poetic licence." He comments. "The light, perhaps being a vie for power, wax being the crumbling fractures within, such as waxing and waning. This is perhaps telling [Shamara] their time is over, and a new power is coming to take its place."
Tanni ponders, deep in thought, listening to others as she deciphers the poem. "Seems to me that Aiden and other members of their family felt that Shamara was growing too powerful and was overreaching the boundaries of her domain. Lugh, the old god, was sealed in stone, which was fractured and led to crazy people and bloated animals full of spiders. Remember the dagger? Wasn't it on it's way to followers of Shamara, but Aiden got hold of it instead?"
She places two fingers on her temple, trying to rack her brain. "Shamara was going to use the dagger for something, but Aiden intervened. Maybe Aiden needs the dagger and the help of other gods, like Talos and, Camiela was it?, to steal some of Shamara's power? Jonathan may be right, the wax falling may be the family falling apart or turning against one of their own, Shamara."
She then turns to Falaine, "Remember what the geezer at the library said? He seemed sure that he had some books about Lugh, but didn't find any. Someone may try to keep the existence of old gods like Lugh hidden."
Please note the comment about Lugh below may not be accurate.
Paren scratches his head. "So this isn't really a conflict between the old gods and the new. It's a conflict between Shamara and the other gods? I would also like to point out that it is not Lugh who was trapped in the stone, it was this god of death. Lugh has stones like this one but he is not trapped in them, he is in nature."

The hole looks to be empty as those gathered around it peer into the darkness. All get the feeling that whatever caused this hole is long gone. It is roughly four feet wide in diameter. Looking around, you see what looks to be the start of several other holes that were abandoned before making move than a divot in the forest floor.
Paren would get the sense of something of importance deep inside the hole. (You may use Divine sense if you'd like to get a bit more info).
"So its some sort of physical power or something?" Jonathan ponders. "Well, whatever it is, let's keep going. I think lighting a torch is best if we're checking those holes and the like, though one of you can do the prodding about." He seems to prefer not to get too much woodland debris on his new cloak.
The narrow tunnel doesn't look to afford anyone attempting to get through the opportunity to not get a little dirty on the way. It looks about as safe as a hole in the middle of the forest could be but there are no signs of immediate threat.
Paren taps into the magical forces he's been trained in and can sense something drawing him toward the hole.
Paren can sense that the ground below the very shrine he had prayed many times has received a sort of holy blessing on it within the past few days. Paren feels both the flow of life and the pull of death from below. The magic is waning and most likely only has a few more hours left before it dissipates. He doesn't sense any beings below and feels rather confident in the safety of the hole.

Paren bends down to pick up his shield and yklwa. He then walks over and examines the hole.

((Paren's not a very good Paladin ;) ))
Paren looks up from the hole with a curious glance. "I called him Daais, it's what he said he preferred. Why? Is there something I'm missing?"
