Having no hope to inherit the family business (mainly due to more able and elder siblings), Xel-Thoth was sent to study magic at the great library of Candle Keep. At the library he excelled in his studies as well enjoyed the sheer number of books available to feed his hunger for knowledge. It was here where he befriended Agrabin, one of the oldest librarians in Candle Keep. As the years passed, Xel-Thoth mastered the arcane arts. His friendship with Agrabin continued and he taught him the ways and secrets of Candle Keep. Agrabin, on his deathbed made Xel-Thoth promise to continue what he had devoted his life to. Upon Agrabin's passing, he bequeathed Xel-Thoth his possessions, part of which were numerous notes and writings. Going over all these, Xel-Thoth discovered what Agrabin was asking him to do. Agrabin's life pursuit was to try to craft one of the rarest magical items known - the legendary Staff of the Magi. Xel-Thoth found formulas and measurements, locations of exotic ingredients and materials, lists of craftsmen and wizards, all needed in crafting the staff. The research was voluminous but still needed to be sorted and refined. And from the looks of it, Xel-Thoth did not possess even a minuscule amount of the skill needed to craft such an item.
Asking permission from his superiors to leave Candle Keep temporarily to "explore the world" in order to better serve it, Xel-Thoth started traveling the Sword Coast. He needed both experience and gold in order to reach his goal.

Frilovar, or Frilovus to his friends and neighbours, was just the sort of high spirited young gentleman every village has roughly once every other generation, slipped in Olladra good honest followers of Arawai on their toes. A bright young fellow, works hard as anyone during planting and harvest, and also when the ore mine is being delivered. Yet there was always a definate something about him - a sense that some sort of mischevous fun could happen at anytime around him...
