"Hellllloooooooo?? Gnome people?? Hellllllooooooooo??" Ketch bellows into the mouth of the cave, stepping slowly into the cave. He's walking slowly not out of caution but rather in not wanting to blunder right into someone's house. As much as a cave can be a house. If there was a door he would have knocked but, as Gruumsh teaches, the lack of a door is an invitation inside.
Your voice echos back at you and it is more apparent that the sound of the water is also being echoed here, but fainter. You also better see indirect light coming from both tunnel ends.
Tyrgram snapped out of his daydream. His mind had been wandering for the past couple of minutes as the sight of the waterfall, cave, mushrooms and gnomes left an enchanted impression on him. He blinked a couple of times to get the blurry edges of his sight to refocus but as he did, he got the distinct feeling that his eyes had... changed? Though improved was perhaps the better description. Tyrgram felt like he experienced the world clearer now.
But there would be time to dwell upon that later. The rest of the group was heading into a cave and he did not want to be left behind. With a quick step, Tyrgram caught up to the others.
"I must recommend to my fellow gnomes that they get a doormat, or a doorbell, so they can better receive visitors! Or maybe this is still the path to their front door? Can anyone see a doorbell, or perhaps a knocker of some sort? HELLO!!" Chom again cups his hands and shouts, aided by a little magic (Minor Illusion) to make his voice boom loud and deep enough to put a half-orc to shame.
If there is nothing eye-catching that may draw Ketch's attention from what he can see in either direction, then he continues forward. Easier to remember the way back that way.
25 feet in, the tunnel branches into two passageways, one left and one right. You see the opening to a room 5-10 feet down on the right. To the left, the passage goes 15 feet then turns right.
Xel-Thoth starts feeling anxious the deeper the group moves into the tunnel system.
He casts "Mage Armor" on himself and by doing so also activates the Arcane Ward feature - gaining a magical ward around him equivalent to 7HP.
Xel-Thoth casts a spell, focusing on his staff and reciting the chant he has memorized by rote, he creates a magical barrier around him. At the same time, he is able the concurrently use the arcane energies to create another ward over the barrier, a further layer of protection.
"Perhaps this is the greeting room"he says gesturing to the room coming up on the right. "Chom, do gnomes have certain customs we should be obeying while here? I'd hate to offend them"

Xel-Thoth, as you cast the spell, you blink. And blink again. Third time makes you sure.
There are tiny points of light circling around you. You can see the area around you is now in a bright light for about 10 feet, and a dim light maybe 10 more feet beyond that.
The gnome scratches his head with a puzzled look on his face, before his expression changes to one of just having had a revelation, mouth open and finger raised. "No, no, can't say I do! Always be polite and friendly, which is good etiquette regardless of your race, wouldn't you agree? If we've missed the doorbell, then we would of course apologise profusely for entering unbidden. Perhaps they are having a surprise party for the gnome outside, and are all hiding while they wait for her to come back inside?" His expression turns to one of shock. "Should we have brought a present? Perhaps one of us should run back outside and find out if she is having a surprise party?" Chom looks genuinely concerned, glancing between the group and the passageway they entered from.
Ketch looks at the gnome, a confused expression upon his face. "But if it was a surprise party for them, then how... Ohhh, never mind! As Gruumsh says, surprise a Half-Orc at you're own peril!" That settled, Ketch turns down the passage to the right and heads towards the room. "Hello Gnome people! We've got cake for the party!!"
You hear a loud whirling sound and a high, fast chattering in Gnomish. There's several loud clicks, one after the other and the whirling stops. A few more words, then silence.
Xel-Thoth looks over to Chom - "Chom, could you perhaps translate?"
In a louder voice (and in Common) he shouts towards where the voice and noises came from: "Excuse us. One of the gnomes outside with the mushrooms said it was okay for us to come in. We mean no harm or trouble. We are on an errand from Phandalin."

John could always see well enough in the dark, and so far there'd been no sign of anyone. Nobody, was nothing to be scared of! So he trailed off into the bad habit of daydreaming. Wondering how long it had taken such little folk to dig out such deep tunnel systems. And, why did they make it big enough for he and Ketch to plod into? They must not care for guests, because there were no lights or directions. Mother had made sure to teach him how to spot an uninviting situation.
But they were here to do a job. So, he followed his group silently as they chatted and called out. Wondering to himself and occasionally touching the rough walls, just for something to do.
As he followed his group into the path leading to the right, suddenly, there was an unfamiliar sound. Like a rope when you swung it around over your head. Followed by an unfamiliar voice, in an unfamiliar language! "My fr-" He began softly, stopping at the sound of several clicks, and a little more unfamiliar chatter. He couldn't explain exactly why, if anyone asked him, but he had a familiar feeling in the pit of his stomach.
"Anyone recognize that language? As Gruumsh noted, we cannot understand what we don’t understand.”
His right hand reaching under his cloak for the handle of his greataxe dangling at his hip, he tried to interject once more. "Probably Gnomish, but-"
"Chom, could you perhaps translate? Excuse us. One of the gnomes outside with the mushrooms said it was okay for us to come in. We mean no harm or trouble. We are on an errand from Phandalin."
Right hand firmly gripped on the ax handle still holstered, he strides forward, shouldering his way to the front of the group with Ketch. "Friends, i think we should pause a mo-"
"NO! NOT GET ME! MY INVENTION SHOW YOU!"
If he was asked at exactly that moment, John knew he could explain the pit in his stomach now. "LOOK OUT!"

Xel-Thoth follows the group. He casts "Light" on his staff to better illuminate the passageway the group is taking.
Ketch continues forward, occasionally calling out. Once at a junction or intersection he’ll peer down as best he can.

The call booms out, and echos back almost louder, but there is no other reply either ahead or from the short passage on yoir left.
