Whatever Dahvik was expecting, it wasn't this. Keeping the disappointment off his face, he glances at the other adventurers to get a feel for their reactions. Hearing the serious-sounding response from the tall elfin-looking gentleman - Lorian, was it? Yeah, that was it - didn't dampen Dahvik's skepticism much. Had he gotten his hopes up for nothing?
Lorian looks Father Cadfrey in the eyes and says in a serious tone. “I came to this town to find a ‘Scholar of Candelkeep.’ I saw a vision, through the eyes of a raven. The bird flew into a wall of mist. I couldn’t see much, but there were shadows of all sorts of abominations. The raven managed to get out of the mist and all of those monsters were gone.”
Father Cadfrey will note any other responses then he will continue.
"Well, all this is fascinating!" he says. "I am sure most of you are interested in what the compensation for such an endeavor, Yes?"
Father Cadfrey pauses for a moment and continues:
"I have been authorized to offer a retainer of 5 gold pieces and upon completion of the mission or gaining sufficient information on the subject I am authorized to pay 30 gold pieces each."he again pauses. "Also, if this investigation leads us to the exploration of ruins, dungeons and the like all items found are yours to keep as long as there is sufficient agreement among the company"
"Though" Father Cadfrey continues "I would ask for consideration to have an opportunity to study any item that may be connected to the subject. The study will last no more than 3 hours at the most and the items will promptly be returned to the claimant of said items." Father Cadfrey starts sounding more like an accountant than a priest during this part of the conversation."
Father Cadfrey looks at each to see if there is some reaction then will ask:

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Whatever Dahvik may or may not know about the Vistani (History: 15), he'd want to hear the cleric's version before responding. He glances at the other's reactions before turning back to Cadfrey. "I'm guessing you have," he prompts.
Father Cadfrey nods: " I have a suspicion that the disappearances around Daggerford, as I stated, have a Mist associated with it." he pauses.
"This mist seems to appear suddenly. It encompasses its victim, then the victim is gone, never heard from again." Father Cadfrey seems perplexed by this statement himself but continues.
"There are a people called the Vistani. In the annuals of Candlekeep they are noted as a people from a pocket dimension and travel back and forth through this Mist at will. It has been suggested if one could get the Vistani to consent to guide you through the Mist you could travel to and from the dimension. If my suspicions are correct and the Mist is taking the people of Daggerford, we find the Mist, we find the pocket dimension and therefore find out what has happened to all those souls who disappeared." Father Cadfrey stops and sighs.
"But, all this is just speculation based on old journals and notes. I believe the best that can be done is investigate what is happening and try to determine what the source of the disappearances are. Outside of what the local offers are for investigating these incidences, I am still offering to pay what I stated before."
Father Cadfrey takes a long drink from his cup, looks at the company gathered with him and asks:
"So, which of you are interested? If you have any questions of the subject at hand I will do my best to answer but, know that even the Scholars of Candlekeep have limited understanding of what may be going on. To be honest, since the death of Bishop Pollas, May he ever be part of the Weave, no one besides myself has taken on this subject of study. All prior efforts have met with a limited result, and a few disappearances. I seem to be the only one who has developed an interest in the subject."
Father Cadfrey's voice trails off a bit with the last as if it seems he has some confusion or trepidation about it.
Lorian grimly nods, showing his interest in joining Father Cadfrey in his study. “These disappearances are nothing compared to what I’ve seen, but I shall share with you this: This mystery is like a town. It’s not very important on its own, but if it comes together with many others, a kingdom will rise. In this case, stopping these disappearances from continuing may prevent an evil from awakening.”
Ellara leans forwards, “I’m still up for it. Monsters are monsters, whether they’re from here, there or neither. Has any of your studies hinted at how to fight these Vistani?”

Dahvik leans back, finally letting his reluctance show. "That's an awful lot of speculation," he says skeptically. "The truth is..." he trails off. The truth is, I'm desperate for an excuse to ditch this town and leave my unfinished business safely unfinished. "The truth is, I don't think we'll find anything." He shrugs. "Which, I suppose, will make this some easy cash. I guess I'm in."
Whatever Dahvik may or may not know about the Vistani (History: 7), he'd want to hear the cleric's version before responding. He glances at the other's reactions before turning back to Cadfrey. "I'm guessing you have," he prompts.

"So, first order of business." Father Cadfrey will distribute 5 gold to each person. As he hands then the gold he says a small prayer over the coins and address those who have asked questions:
With Lorien he nods and says: "You are right, though my pursuit in this area is to preserve knowledge, if there is evil afoot and it threatens Faerun we must act. And yes in some of the source material I have studied it is reported they can not only travel through the Mist to the realms and back but, they can guide some through, or so I am lead to believe."
With Ellara he says: "I would hope to make the Vistani an ally and guide. Fighting them is something i hope not to do."
With Dahvik he says: "Thank you for deciding to come along. I do believe you will possibly see the adventure you crave."
With that Father Cadfrey get up and go to the inn keeper and say "Could we have a bit of food with just a little more flavor than fish stew. enough for this company here? I would also like to reserve beds for the company for the night. he finishes with a smile.
"A pitcher and more cups as well if you please." Father Cadfrey calls out as he returns and sits back down.
He looks to all at the table. "Lets sit for a spell and get to know one another. I have been so self absorbed in my tale and mission i have neglected to have all you introduce yourselves and let the others know something of you."
After little time the serving girl, Gilda, approaches your table with a pitcher of mead and clean tankards for all of you. She smiles at you and sets the tray on the table. With an apologetic look on her face she says to Father Cadfrey: "My lord, unfortunately fish stew is the only warm meal we have today. You see, this establishment is not really one for big meals. Apart from the stew, we can bring you bread, cheese, dried sausage and dried fruit, if that is your preference." She then looks around, waiting for everybody's preference concerning the food.
Father Cadfrey smiles brightly at Gilda. "I think, that my dear, would be lovely." he pauses. "For me at least." Father Cadfrey looks to the others smiling.
