Robwin turns and sees Prosper as she approaches and tries to stand, to move towards her. He holds both of her shoulders in his hands, either to make sure he doesn’t fall down, or to impress upon her the importance of the moment, or simply just to make sure she’s real, that he’s stood there, that this isn’t a dream...
He looks her right in the eye ”I saw it... I saw...” shaking his head “it was so fast. It plucked a creature from the forest like it was nothing...”.
”East... it went east. To the mountains. The people aren’t safe. We have to do something. If anyone is out there... we have to do something”.
The woman smiles and nods, taking the coin. "Thank you. If you ever need for armor, and have some coin to spare, our doors are always open." As Prosper leaves, she can see Robwin in a state of panic.
Robwin, the creature was too far away to really get much detail but you would guess it's mostly white. The prey it picked up, however, was but a tiny blur in it's claws.
Prosper lifts up a hand, almost ready to brush Robwin off before his words. "How- what did you see?" Prosper looks up in alarm, glancing left and right in an attempt to spot what stirred up Robwin. "Of course, of course." She says soothingly. "We'll do everything we can to keep them..."She trails off for a moment, looking uncertain as she realizes she still has very little idea what Robwin was talking about. "Safe." She continues, rallying admirably. "How about we sit down somewhere, take a short break before we go to the mill?"
Vimak stops practicing chopping and hacking, battering and blocking. He sees Robwin and Prosper and trots toward them. "What happened?" He looks slowly toward the sky. "You think you saw it? How big was it? How far?" His hand tightens around his ax. "Hmm. Is there much more we need to do? We said we'd warn the woman and the gnomes. We ought to do that. Were there other postings on the board?"
Robwin releases Prosper, and steps back a little, realising only now that he’d practically pounced on someone with 4 (is it 4 now?) daggers, “I’m sorry”.
He looks round, finding his bearings properly, getting his ‘land legs’ back again (after dropping connection with Lia so abruptly), and sees Vimak, and the rest of the team...
His breathing returns to normal, and he tries to explain the whole thing to everyone: resting, seeing through Lia’s eyes, scouting the area, looking farther afield...
“Its okay for now, it was far away from here, over the forest. I couldn’t make out much detail... although I think it was white, mostly white. I’m sorry. I’m ok... At least it was heading away!” He says, with an attempt at a smile, “and maybe it won’t be hungry again for a while?! Maybe”.
He looks back at Prosper more calmly now and gives her a genuine smile “Thank you, I’m okay, honestly”.
And to Vimak while squinting up at the sky, “but yes I think we should warn the woman on the hill and the gnomes... and the miners at the excavation too”.
Although shaken, Robwin is ready to head out if the others are (to the woman on the hill maybe, since it seems to be closest?).
(Four daggers, yeah, Prosper went on a little dagger collecting spree. Prosper's good to go!)
"Well, if it was leaving anyway, at least we'll have some time before having to deal with it."Prosper agrees idealistically, discreetly smoothing her slightly-rumpled clothes. Her expression is still worried, however, as she glances at Lia, wondering what exactly the little familiar had managed to spot. "We'll go warn Miss Gwynn right now, and maybe the others, if we have time."
Robwin agrees. And assuming we head to Umbrage hill and have a moment to walk and speak, Robwin hangs back with Prosper and confides in her: “Thanks for earlier. You know I favour daggers myself too”.
He slides a pretty, but simple, dagger from somewhere beneath the folds in his travelling cloak and shows her.
“We trained in a few mundane weapons alongside our magical lessons... swords, bows... as well as strength and fitness. ‘Healthy body, healthy mind’ they said. And you never know when your powers might fail or you get hit by an anti-magic field”.
He’s mostly just talking to calm himself from what he just saw, but he does truly appreciate Prosper being around.
”Maybe when we get a quiet moment we could train together. You could give me a few tips. I promise no magic!”.
You all decide to head to Umbrage Hill, heading out the southern entrance of the town and into the forests. The journey there is a peaceful one, though most of you do notice there are less animals around than usual, creating a much quieter journey than you're all used to. The birds do call and small animals since chitter but at lesser intervals and lower volumes.
Two hours pass by before the forest opens up to a lucious green field of grass with Umbrage Hill just coming into view on the horizon. As you all get closer, however, you begin to hear the banging of wood and stone.
Built on the slope of the hill is an old stone windmill surrounded by an iron fence. A large winged monster with a spiky tail is trying to knock down the windmill’s front door. A woman appears in a second-floor window, waves at you, and yells, “A little help?!” The creature doesn't seem to notice you despite her call.
If the group is still far enough away not to be noticed (or if the beast seems particularly noisy and distracted), then Robwin will cast mage armor on himself. This spell will also simultaneously trigger his 'Arcane Ward' (+8hp).
As his armour and ward come in to being, Robwin appears to slip into an uncharacteristic (and slightly unnerving) state of calm - as if some facet of his recent schooling and training seems to kick in...
Lia is already with him. But he'll telepathically 'shush' her and calm her too. He also encourages her to try to 'stay down' and settle into the hood of his travelling cloak (which is currently hanging like a hammock for her, on his back, between his shoulder-blades).
He stays with the group, but he'll aim to keep towards the back (a little) if possible.
OOC: On our approach to the mill, do we see any cover? And does there appear to be a gate or any way through the fence?
Vimak will move within handaxe range of the monster (OOC: it's not the dragon, right?) and heave his handaxe at it: 15 for 11 points of damage. As soon as he has made his throw, he will switch to his battle axe. He doesn't move closer. He watches it with his shield up.
"Don't worry about it. We all need a hand every now and then. Want a dagger?" She holds one she recently purchased up. "I'm mostly buying spares. We'll see about training when we have some time to spare, so long as you don't spell me. Not that I don't have magic of my own."
When they come up the hill Prosper stares a little at the monster assaulting the structure (can we roll a nature to check what it is?) then immediately begins waving frantically to the woman to make it clear that she heard and is here to help. She starts running up the hill towards the windmill, quietly trying to avoid gaining the attention of the monster, fitting an arrow to her shortbow as she does so. She looses the arrow as soon as she's within bow range of the manticore (80ft, would not have ran if was already in range).
(OOC: Not a surprise round actually. The hills are massive. You were all over 100ft away from the creature when you saw it and considering that most of you aren't trying to be stealthy, it definitely would've notice you guys running towards it. Luckily, it rolled crap for initiative anyways.)
CREATURE
Prosper attempts to try and discern what exactly the creature is but is unable to. At the very least, you all know it isn't the dragon, despite its draconic wings. The fields are wide and open, not a single thing that could be used as cover can be seen. The mill itself sits about 20ft up on a hillside. You can see a fence surrounding it with multiple entrances. As you all begin to approach, the creature turns to face you and roars. "Argh! Pesky people! Just more food for me!"
Vimak rushes forward first. He gets up nice and close to the creature and throws his handaxe. It lodges itself right into the side of its shoulder, causing the creature to roar in pain.
Tahnis follows behind but keeps at a much longer distance. Raising his bow, he lets loose an arrow. The creature attempts to bat it away with its paw but the arrow pierces into its flesh instead.
Robwin and Prosper approach beside Tahnis, letting their own attacks fly through the air. A bolt of fire and an arrow fly straight towards the creature but it manages to swiftly dodge both attacks.
MAP
(OOC: I'll update the battle map once Adas posts what they want to do. For now, decide where you'd like to be positioned. Vimak has to be within 20ft of the creature but other than that, everyone can be wherever they want to be.)
OOC: So which way did we come from? North I think... In that case, Robwin would have probably arrived at (A12) to give him line-of-sight for his fire bolt (the one that missed). And he will stay there for now.
(flavour text) Robwin, swallows hard as his spell flies wide of it's mark. He re-centres his low, wide stance: palms open and forward (much like a monk's ready stance). "That was a warning shot!... uhem... uh... Stand down noble beast!".
Robwin turns and sees Prosper as she approaches and tries to stand, to move towards her.
