Hothren gives a quick look at Goddard and makes a disapproving clucking sound with his tong.
"Excuse my sarcastic friend but we have had one of those nights. We are new to the city and didn't know. But we did help in a way. We are curr'tly looking for someone and pesonaly for work... Maybe we could help you?"
“Knowing her tricks, she’s most likely long gone by now.” He pauses for a second to clear his throat, and continues. “If you agree to help me track her down and find whoever’s behind this, I may not imprison you for life. Do we have a deal?”
"I have no trouble helping out." Valen says with a frown. "Though I believe you would have a lot of trouble imprisoning anyone here for not stopping someone they did not know anything about." He shrugs. "I'd suggest asking nicely for us to help and figure out how you wish to reward us for the effort." He would hold the official's eyes directly. "If we knew who this person was on sight, and knowingly let them escape, then you could, maybe, find a way to lock some of us up. As things are we did not know this person, nor would we have let them go if we did know them." He pauses for a moment. "You have a group here who will likely aid you in this work, but threatening me, us, is not a good way to get that aid."
(Also, OOC note: Tomorrow is game day for my “main” D&D group, and since I spend mornings finishing prep, afternoons playing, and evenings recovering from whatever craziness the party caused, I will most likely be on DDB, but I won’t be replying to anything, so don’t freak out if I don’t post.)
“As my..” he holds a hand out towards Valen, “..companion said, you can’t expect anyone to stop a criminal they don’t know about. However, we can take this problem off your hands in exchange for some kind of compensation for our time.”
"So you are the city watchmaster then?" Valen asks with a glance over the man and his two companions. "I have some business with you once we are completed with this task."
" Ok. " he says with some sort of finality, like a bargain has been struck, " We will do this to show you that we are not part of any of this and to gain some good will from you."
"Maybe you could tell us a few things about our quarry and her group ? We don't want to unnecessarily step on the wrong toes."
"Maybe you can spare one quick bit o' info. You say knowing her tricks, she be long gone. You meanin' she be usin' magic, or that she's just quick and crafty?"
Ulfgar is noticably bouncing on his toes, obviously itching to get into a fight.

"Wha'ever be tha decision on dis proposal, I'd say it should be made wit haste. Your quarry be sprinttin' like o Barlgura outta de Abyss."

Hothren looks at Valen then at the gruff looking man. And makes the same noise he had made for Goddard he sakes his head.
"I should have let you do the talking Goddard. I apologize for not seeing sooner. That man only understands things as you put them."
He stares in the eye of the gruff looking man again. "Ask nicely." he says in a cold voice.
“You’re really talking like that to city watchmaster? You have some courage, I’ll give you that!”

"Very well." Valen says and strides off in the direction the figures went.
