Akira faces the hovering ogre. “Mages can be a handful but you must cease this at once.” She pulls back her and head then snaps forward releasing the building energy of her breath weapon.

The ogre somehow flails and spins in the grip of Akira's magic, just enough to skirt away from the lightning of her breath. Rogram's words have a clear effect on the creature, however. It roars, spittle falling down atop the party as it defies Karib's attempt to drain its life, and it launches a third javelin toward Akira. Its aim, thrown off through its rage, is no threat.
Round 5 Order: Akira, Karib & Rogram <===== Ogres
Placement: The remaining ogre is levitating 20 feet in the air.
The tolling of the bell continues without losing a beat as the hammer completes its own journey to swing around once more to strike the ogre.
Karib's expression remain grim as he watches the ogre and shakes his head slowly. With a glance behind at Akira he moves to position himself between the mage and the ogre.
Rogram watches as the ogre is finished. Somehow he feels badly about how the situation turned out. He sheathes his unused sword and turns from the scene. "I'll take first watch," he says, downtrodden.
Merric hides a small smile as he hears Karib’s message echo in his mind. It is slightly unnerving at first, even as he knew to expect it, but he is glad to hear from the others after what seemed like a long time. He focuses his thoughts back. Glad to hear the news. Still on the trail, two days out of city. Fought off Bandits. Cult guards getting suspicious. Stay in touch.
He continues his caravan patrol, a little bit of a bounce in his step with relief at hearing from the others. He pulls Jamna and Carlon aside as he encounters them and warns them, but doesn't share that their is a message from Karib. “There are Lizardfolk around, keep an eye out.”
OOC: Holy cow, that's not a fire bolt, that's a fireball.
The ogre's angry roar is cut short by a tremendous gout of flame from Akira's fingertips that engulfs the creature in the sky. Burned and blackened, it floats back down to the earth, as dead as its companion.
OOC: Akira, Karib, and Rogram have each earned 300 XP for defeating the pair of ogres.
When the flames engulf the ogre it's cries of anger and rage turn to screams of but but are quickly replaced by silence. All that remains are the intermingled odours of singed hair and burned flesh.
Karib turns to Akira as they begin to lower the body. "Perhaps we can move this downwind and away from the camp before you release it."
When all is done he pauses briefly to pray over the bodies, asking Gond to help their souls to wherever it is that they need to be. "It felt more like killing rabid wargs than warriors. I suppose we should be thankful."
He nods to Rogram and then remembers the message he received before the attack. "Merric is two days out of the city, met with bandits."
Karib grunts, "I thought this was the safe part! The journey beyond our destination should be interesting."
He removes his hat and rubs his hand over the patchy hair on his head, reminding him of why he shaved it in the first place.
Next contact Mathon (presumably next evening, unless the day goes badly!): "Think before you reply, man!" he says firmly, "Best information first. Tell me about how to get to you, where you are, and how many cultists and others?"
The following day's travel is smooth, the weather grows balmy, and sweat is the only opponent that makes itself known. Merric and the convoy pass by the blackened and slain ogre corpses during the evening, eliciting a comment from Briferhew about someone making their work easy for them.
At the end of the day, Akira, Karib and Rogram reach a hilltop in the evening, providing a chilling look at the Mere of Dead Men ahead. It is a chill tangle of trees, brush, boggy ground, standing water, reeds, and cat-tails stretching farther than the eye can see. In several areas ahead, they can see the Mere threatening to overtake the road, though it looks like the work of Briferhew's charter company and others has paid off well, as the road holds its own against the surrounding swampland.
For Karib:
Mathon's voice replies in your mind, in slightly more measured fashion. "I don't know, durn it! They've got some sort of castle in the swamp, no idea how to get here. It started at the roadhouse."
Karib scan the gloomy swamp, "Let's hope we pass through it in one day." He then turns away from it, facing his companions, "Anyone recall anything about the way ahead?"
@DM: Does "the roadhouse" mean anything to Karib? Also...does he know how far the swamp extends and how far to their destination?
OOC: For Ereshion's question, Briferhew briefly mentioned a roadhouse in post 3116. The swamp extends as far as you can see so far, but as mentioned, the road through it looks intact from what you can see.
Sending her familiar above her, Akira does not see much more detail, with the hilltop already providing nearly a birds-eye view. Through her familiar's eyes, she sees no sign of danger ahead or behind the party.
That assessment proves to be accurate the following day, as nothing more than mosquitos and other pestering insects bother the trio traveling through the mere. The dank humidity is unpleasant, but bearable, and the road is wide and in good repair aside from a few small areas where tangles of swamp weed and other flora has begun to creep across it.
At the end of the day, the convoy reaches the same hilltop that the others had camped atop the previous night, treating Merric and the others to a similar view of the Mere of Dead Men.
By no means depressed, Rogram has settled into a quiet contemplation. The lack of variety and endless monotony has him wishing for any excitement. But knowing that his Pa awaits is enough to keep him from sinking too low.
The convoy rolls forward along the road into the Mere of Dead Men. Throughout the day, Ardred Briferhew pauses for a few moments to examine certain sections of the road. "Noting where we need to send workers for repairs on the return trip," he explains to the rest of the rearguard. "The Mere is constantly trying to overtake the road, and Lord Neverember means business."
Further ahead along the same road, Akira, Karib, and Rogram have another day full of swatting away biting and stinging insects. Something about being in the middle of the mere plays at their nerves, with no end in sight ahead or behind them. As the sky darkens, it seems like the shadows themselves could leap out of the swamp at any moment and lunge at the party along the road. When the trio finally set up camp for the evening, the wariness is heightened when Karib spots movement within the tangles of the mere, something much larger than a snake or a bird rummaging through the waters. He has just enough time to alert the others before the waters of the mere at the side of the road erupt; suddenly, the trio has been surrounded by a quartet of orcs, javelins raised above their heads and the rage of battle on their tusked faces. The stench of their hide armor drenched in swamp water is immediately offensive, and they each carry a greataxe in addition to their javelins. The missiles soar across the road, one striking Rogram in the shin, tearing skin as it falls to the roadside. Behind the party, an even worse stench floats downwind as another large ogre emerges from the swamp, crashing through the treeline, the water only up to the top of its ankles. It nearly skewers Akira with a javelin of its own, twice the size of any of the orcs'. Without hesitation, it charges at the dragonborn.
Round 1 Order: Enemies Players <=====
Placement: Four orcs are 30 feet away from the party. The ogre is engaged in melee combat with Akira.
Health: Akira is lightly wounded. Rogram is lightly wounded.
OOC: Even when I'm not meaning for him to be, Rogram is unwise — even in his thoughts.
When the four orcs first make themselves known, Rogram is initially impetuously excited. When a javelin tears through his leg, however, shooting pain and spilling blood, the half-dwarf is shocked and sorry for his earlier wish. He screams something in Dwarvish akin to "Ouch, that hurts!", then draws his sword. The weapon in hand, he decides to aim a spell at the ogre instead. He narrows his eyes at the huge creature and says, "Flee!"
Akira faces the hovering ogre. “Mages can be a handful but you must cease this at once.” She pulls back her and head then snaps forward releasing the building energy of her breath weapon.
