You could see it above the ground even a day away.
A massive chunk of earth and rock torn from the ground drifts over the swampy forest of Chult, about 30 feet above the ground. A petrified tree towers above the stone, with its stone roots protruding from the bottom. Between the shape of the rock and the branching of the tree’s limbs, it creates the impression of a gigantic stone heart hanging in the sky. The impression is only made more gruesome by the red liquid dripping from the roots. You see a cave mouth in the side of the slowly rotating “heart,” and a staircase winding from the cave up to the flattened top where the petrified tree stands. The staircase definitely isn’t natural; it was carved with tools into the rock.

Zyn looked at her chains. She had an idea.
That might work.
She let her chains loose and took a moment to watch the Heart slowly rotate. As it did, she spied a big piece of petrified tree from the bottom. Still looking up, she began to spin her chains in wide arcs. She launched her chains up hard. "eeYAH!"

The sickle ends slammed into a large tree trunk from the bottom. She pulled as hard as she could, her lean arm muscles popping out and straining. The sickled held. As the Heart rotated, it slowly dragged Zyn from her position, even though she had her feet planted into the ground.
"Go! Go!"she said, nodding upward. It was time to climb.

When everyone was up on the top, you saw a massive petrified tree trunk up top. Zyn climbed up the chains and quickly released the sickle blades, then recoiled the chains into her gloves. It was hot, even up here, and she was covered with a thin sheen of sweat. We walked past the trunk and found the stairs the led to a small cave entrance. The stairs were smooth and don’t show much sign of wear. We went inside.
The cave was musty and dimly lit by daylight filtering down through the hollow, petrified tree trunk 20 feet above. A pool of dirty rainwater occupied the central 20 feet of the floor, between natural pillars formed by the roots of the petrified tree. Three tall bookcases stood against the wall to the right of the cave entrance. A desk and several wooden crates stood against the left-hand wall. Opposite the entrance are two open doorways into smaller chambers and, between them, a large iron cage.
A blonde elven woman in robes and a cloak, working by one the desk, looked up. "Oh!"she said, surprised. "How interesting. Visitors. Hello. I am Valindra."
"Thanks."Zyn smiles, "One of the benefits of having two long chains, I suppose."
Valindra studies you all for a moment, looking you all over. "Such a direct line of questioning, today must be my lucky day. Or perhaps yours? Yes. I have a very good idea where the Soulmonger is. Why do you ask?"she looks at Asha. "Magic." Is all she says.
Zyn sniffs the room, her face wrinkling, but says nothing. She continues to listen to the conversation.

Unlike Zyn, Kitsune is downright skeptical of this weird elf. In elvish, "Forgive me for my forwardness, madam, but why would a sister find herself living in such an abominable place? Surely our kind should be out there (she points outside), amongst the beauty of this land, and not cooped up in this ungodly ... place. I bring news from the locals. Concern, rather. The local constable has sent us to query your intentions."

"Local constable?"Zyn turns, looking at you, perplexed.
Local constable?
"I'm here researching, of course."Valindra says. "My intention is capturing the Soulmonger for research. Something like this has never happened before. This is indeed a case for study, not destruction."
“Enough small talk. We seem to be searching for the same thing. Could I convince you to bring the Soulmonger back to me if I were to tell you where it is?”
Seeing as the elf posed no real threat to them, the wizard looks to relax a bit, deciding to parues the bookshelves of anything that might be interesting to read all while listening in on the conversation Kitsune was having in Elvish.

After, he turns to Valindra who wanted to do nothing with small talk. "While I do agree that it would be quite an interesting device to study,"He pipes in in her native tongue. "Surely a knowledgeable scholar like you would know that the Soulmonger is the cause of the death curse, yes? And that the only way to stop it is to destroy it?"

The books are mostly about undead and necromancy. In fact, there is a certain smell in this cave, like dead bodies. Or something. Zyn can smell it too. She seems to be telling the truth, as far as you can tell.
"That is correct, I do know that it is indeed the cause of the death curse. While teams and expeditions have been sent to destroy it, my employer wishes to study it. If you find it and bring it back to me, I will make it financially worth your while. You may, of course, decline, but good luck finding it."
No. With it's death, it is now a useless corpse.
