With a single strike to a rat, the dagger punches clear through the creatures neck. The rat snaps it's jaws and flails uselessly before being tossed to the ground, dead. One other rat remains as we fall into initiative order. Alos is up. Gavin, you're on deck.
The action is mildly interrupted by odd clinking and clanging, and heavy foot falls. A man clad in heavy chain mail and wielding a crossbow comes dashing into the action!
The bolt whizzes through the air and finds its mark square in the center of the rat's head. It's body, mid leap to attack Gavin, falls lifelessly in a heap against him. Nice shot!
End of Encounter
Each character is awarded 25xp!
!Congratulations!
With the rats valiantly vanquished, there appears to be no obvious dangers to keep our heroes from delving into the depths of the Sunless Citadel.
The group now faces the vast chasm. Weathered stairways zigzag their way deep into darkness. Another landing is visible before the next stairway. A chill wind whips up from the ravine, giving an eerie, baleful moan as the group stands on the precipice. How do you all wish to proceed?
Talking to Wynn, "Thanks for your help taking care of these beasts. That was a nice shot. I'm Gavin Arcanegrin, pirate, swordsman, and rogue. I'm always up for a challenge. Would you mind telling us who you are as we continue downward into this chasm? I'll lead the way if nobody minds."
Wynn's eyebrow perks as Gavin mentions pirate... " The name is Wynn Valster and I am.... no stranger to the seas myself." With Gavins comment about leading the way, Wynn reloads his crossbow and begins to follow. "May I ask why you all are down here?"
"We have been hired by the halfling Isael Broadfoot to find two missing people, a brother and sister. They were part of a party going to a place known as the Sunless Citadel. Our job is to recover what we can, hopefully living bodies but at least a pair of identifying rings. As you may have noticed, we are on our way. You are welcome to join us."
You all begin to descend the stairway. They are narrow and warn. They don't pose any issue, but it's easy to guess that any combat on them would be treacherous! A fortress emerges from the darkness. The subterranean citadel, though impressive, seems long forgotten, if the lightless windows, cracked crenellations, and leaning towers are any indication. All is quiet, though a cold breeze blows up from below, bringing with it the scent of dust and a faint trace of rot.
Finally, the narrow stairs empty into a small courtyard, apparently the top of what was once a crenellated battlement. The buried citadel has sunk so far into the earth that the battlement is now level with the surrounding floor. That floor stretches away to the north and south, composed of a layer of treacherous, crumbled masonry, which reaches to an unknown depth. To the west looms the surviving structure of what must be the Sunless Citadel. A tower stands on the west side of the courtyard. The courtyard is easily 30 ft wide, and the tower stands about 60 feet away.
Before anyone moves further, the sound of footsteps can be heard behind them. Someone follows down the stairway! Before them now stands a half-elf warrior of some sort.
OOC: New people, falling from the sky :) Welcome to the group.
Gavin turns to Barnos and says, "Another person? I'm surprised that this path is as traveled as it is. I would think that few would come this way. What brings you to this chasm? As I recently explained to Wynn, we have been hired to find a brother and sister and recover them or their rings if we can. It appears that you mean to join us and we will gladly take you."

Realizing their cover is blown and seeing Gavin reaching for his dagger, two Giant Rats leap from the pile and attack!
(For initiative, I'll do the rolls for everyone just for the sake of getting everything going. Let me know if everyone is okay with this!)
Gavin, you may make an attack right now since you readied an action.

I'm going to give Alos until tonight to post. Then the turn will pass to Gavin just for the sake of moving things along.

Hearing the commotion ahead, Wynn rushes forward crossbow at the ready.
(Just let me know when I go)
Go right ahead!
Seeing the giant rat corpse and the other live rat up ahead, Wynn points his crossbow in an attempt to shoot the other rat.

Wynn holds his crossbow in both hands pointing away from the other adventurers.
"Well this wasn't at all what I was expecting."

Having said that Gavin turns, ready to proceed.

Wynn smiles.... "Fortune favors the bold. Lead the way."

With a bow the 1/2 elf states " you guys are hard to catch up with, sorry for being late, my name is Barnos. At your service.
