"I say we push on to Guiston. It might be tough, but even if we end up sleeping against the outer part of their walls it should probably be safer than nothing." While travelling, Hyre will attempt at foraging for food. If the party sticks around in the clearing for long, he will attempt to rest a little. Survival check for foraging: 5
(Bah! Bad dice all around! There'll be lots more chances though)
Hyre manages to find.. some particularly fat grubs. They're.... technically edible. Probably packed full of protein, if they don't make you retch. As the group travels, they become aware of a noise in the distance. Horses. Coming from the road to the south, headed towards Guiston. It doesn't quite sound like the metallic squeal of the Skell. The group is already in the treeline, and as the sound advances, it's clear that it's NOT Skell forces. Rather, it's an entire herd of centaurs rumbling down the road at full gallop to make their number sound as threatening as possible.

"Whoah- where did Hyre go?" Lazlo thinks. One minute his friend was beside him, but now he was gone- out of sight. He listens to the sounds of the thuderous hooves, which he finds quite comforting. "Maybe I should get out of sight as well..."
ooc: Would we know whether or not these Centaurs were hostile or not? I know the MM says they are Nuetral Good but I wasn't sure whether they were more like the centaurs of Greek myth (pretty unpredictable). If we could hitch a ride with these guys or get an escort that would be great. I can make a check?
As the centaurs come into view, Aelar tries to remember if his father or cousin ever said anything about them, then decides hiding would be a good idea.
(That's 1 success to artistry-carving! Just waiting to see if Balgrim or Hyre want to do anything at the clearing.
ooc: That's cool but nothing on the Survival...any food at all?
You found... a handful of berries that don't smell very good. Birds were eating them, so they're probably safe, if overripe. You need a DC of 13 for a success.
Meanwhile, Aelar seems to recall his father saying centaurs are haughty and abrasive, but not generally hostile. They largely act as rapid couriers as they charge down the roads, expecting 'two leggers' to make way for them. Lazlo mostly seems to recall that centaurs usually keep to themselves and are generally uninterested in taking part of human civilization, by and large figuring themselves above hiding behind walls. They're generally mercenaries and messengers with no loyalty to anyone.
The caravan is starting to turn down the road. Each of them is carrying saddlebags, possibly with goods inside. There's an especially large centaur bringing up the rear who's pulling a cart full of boxes and tied-down packages. They're chattering among themselves in their native tongue, though it seems they're making sport of the wagon-puller.

Aelar watches the centaurs as they ride past, wondering if they should call out, ask for help. His father had told him they weren't a hostile people but hadn't made them sound particularly helpful, either. "Honestly, Aelar, they are mostly annoying jerks who think they are better than us 'two-leggers' as they call us." was the phrase that'd popped into his head
He decided to keep his head down. If he'd been alone, maybe it would've been worth the risk. But he'd no right to risk his friends.
As he'd found himself doing since he'd finished the carving, Aelar studied the likeness of the Dragon. Somehow, he knew it was accurate...Whoa...mind on the business at hand. He went back to studying the centaurs, checking for weapons, seeing if he could figure out what they were carrying
Oh, there's food all right, on the cart. The group can smell it from the tree line. In-between hoof beats, Hyre and Aelar can hear that the other centaurs are mostly transporting money with the telltale jingle of coins. The big centaur has the worst job, as it puts her at the greatest risk of being attacked if she falls behind.
They're well-armed with longbows and spears. Centaurs are renowned for being quick-response infantry, able to lay down suppressing fire while staying mobile, and more than a few great beasts have been felled trying to chase a group of centaurs down only to be turned into living pin-cushions for their trouble.Their arrogance is sometimes well deserved.
They're talking among themselves again, and the 'lead' centaurs take out water skins. Looks like they're stopping for now to head to the river.

While hiding, Balgrim looks closely at the twine and thin branches he carries and wonders if the crafting of a bow and/or arrows is possible using the materials.
"Guys," whispers Hyre, "I think we should use this opportunity to take some of their food. Not too much, just enough for us six to survive. I could do it myself, but I want to make sure you're all willing to take the risk."

Shakes his head. "We won't starve before we reach Guiston," Aelar whispers back, "and it's not like they'll leave the food alone. If nothing else, the one pulling it will still be here. And, honestly, I'd rather just ask. If we get caught stealing, who knows that they'll do. Centaurs are arrogant jerks; that's what my father said and he'd met them."

"We could just ask for food. I wouldn't want to get caught trying to lift anything off of bashers like that. The worst that could happen is they say" Lazlo does his best centaur imitation "Nah you two legged beasties! Crawl back where you belong in the ditch whilst we free and fast folk ride off yonder!". I'd be willing to talk to them... or try to? I have hooves, they have hooves... maybe the bridge to gap two peoples? Old Man Coggins used to say 'You get a hundred percent of what you don't ask for" and he was pretty smart." He waits to see what his friends want to do.
(Lazlo gets 5 more points towards bard for the attempt anyway.)
Balgrim estimates that he does indeed have materials to make a bow... not a GOOD bow, certainly not good enough to be an effective weapon, but it could, in theory, be good enough to hunt small game with.
If the group just stays still, the centaurs won't notice them as they run by. They will be passing quite close, but not close enough to detect the group who are already hiding, especially since they're running at a full gallop.
They leave the wagon pulling centaur by herself, who stands with her arms folded, raking her foot against the ground in irritation.

"Ok Aelar. I think this is going to work out really well. What could go wrong?" Lazlo says as he slowly walks towards the herd of Centaurs. He positions his hands and arms in a way that makes it clear he is holding no weapons and is no threat. "Hail and well met, brave traveler." he calls out "Might we speak with you? We've heard many a story of the glorious deeds of your kind- but have never had the honor of meeting one in the flesh. Though we are just poor, weary travelers- we wanted to meet firsthand the fair and fleet of foot Centaurs of legend."
