"I- well..." Piemin speaks up hesitantly, responding to Hlin's 'friendly chatter,' "I think it's been a few years. I'm not sure if you remember them, but my uncle, aunt and father have not been doing well. There was a problem while we were out shopping and I ended up with too many supplies, I'm sure they don't like me wasting my money and coming into town. But I appreciate what you've done for me and my family and... and I'd love to help you out."
Piemin never looks the intimidating dwarf in the eye and always glances off to the side or past her face. He fidgets and speaks somewhat quietly, hoping the other members of the party don't look at him too much.
In Thieves Cant, Piemin basically says to Hlin: - It's pretty urgent, the target (the aunt, I made that bit up), my guild superior, and the client (a government official or aristocrat) are after me after I took something and ran away. I hope you can do what they've said you can and will help you out as compensation for your time. (Or something along those lines.)
It appears to be settled then. How should we start? do we have any leads? *He's studying Piemin trying to pick up what he's actually saying. (un successfully)
*Brod looks at his new companions.*
I dont suppose we want to discuss our skill sets to make this easy? I'm a bard. just not one of those sing for money flirt with everything that moves kind. I'm good at finding out info and making allies. I know a little bit of magic in a pinch.
"Oh, don't worry I'll, mhmp, pick up the slack when it comes to flirting with everything that moves. I'm Haribo Harpell of the Longsaddle Harpells, friend of Drizzt Do'Urden, Enchanter and, mhmp, *private* entertainer."
(Ooc: the "mhmp"s are him giggling to himself when he's trying to make innuendos)
Vothos stands up, and while tall as all Goliaths are, he is far from the tallest. He looks over the motley crew and chuckles a little bit to himself. He then crosses his arms across his chest with one hand open and one hand clenched in a fist and bows slightly. A necklace made of bones droops from his neck as he does so and you get a glance of some black bone-studded leather armor beneath his robes.
"I am from these lands and I, too, have some magic I can use if things get rough. While I can't say I am too familiar with the Ten-Towns, I have spent some time exploring recently. Should we check around town for any others who might have information or hit the road to head south toward Termalaine and then Targos?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"How about this, I'll take some died fish to go, and I'll go see what people know."
(How do I go about gathering information? Assuming persuasion I'll make a roll, but if you prefer something else I can reroll or just tell you the new result.)
Of the party agrees, Haribo will go make friends with some of the locals to find out where their quarry might be headed.
Piemin shrivels from Brod's gaze and he desperately looks for somewhere to crawl into and hide. Seeing nothing, he accepts his fate and speaks up.
"P-p-people have complimented me on my archery, and I think I'm pretty good at staying hidden, um, but maybe, I just..." He trails off into mutterings.
Piemin will accompany the group to wherever they go, but would rather not be alone with someone, especially not Brod.
"Care to take a walk to see if we can find more information? They don't have waiū here anyway," says the intimidating goliath in a rather comforting way. He grins revealing pearly white, nearly flawless teeth.
"If we must separate, let's meet back here tonight for dinner."
Hlin stands with a slight wince, showing her age. "I wish you the best, if you need me, I am here most afternoons. Or you can find me at my home." She gives you directions to a plain house in Lonelywood.
She dons her wolf skin cloak, and buttoning it tight down her chest. She wraps a scarf across her face, and pulls up her hood, then pulls on a pair of fur lined mittens, and grabs her cane. She nods at the heroes and walks off with a slight limp into the cold everlasting night of Icewind Dale.
Well then... Will go off on my own for a bit and see what i cna find around town. Will meet you folks back here for dinner then. he gives a gentlemanly nod and puts on his coat and hood but first walks over to the bartender in an attempt to gather information.
(based on my background and backstory of being a frequent tavern visitor. Id like to see if my feat gives me any info on rumors in the town and trying to see if anyone strange has come into the bar before our group. Id like my contacts to be bartenders specifically if possible as a bard in a bar is pretty common i feel like they would get to know me a bit)
Feature: Ear to the Ground You are in frequent contact with people in the segment of society that your chosen quarries move through. These people might be associated with the criminal underworld, the rough-and-tumble folk of the streets, or members of high society. This connection comes in the form of a contact in any city you visit, a person who provides information about the people and places of the local area.
Will offer to perform tonight and reward him my tips for any leads.
For Svfra, still quite new to the surface, the Ten-Towns are the pinnacle of civilization! Somewhat to her amazement, the shiny tokens she has collected can indeed be exchanged for goods and services, and she has quickly burned through most of her meager savings.
Wearing her freshly acquired garments and gear, more appropriate for the weather (Weather!), she raises her goggles and stomps her feet, remembering only at the last moment to remove her crampons before entering the tavern. After a lifetime in the Underdark, she recently emerged at the northern foot of the mountains called the Spine of the World. Despite the permanent gloom here, she has followed the auroras up to Lonelywood, the northernmost town in Icewind Dale.
As she makes to enter the Lucky Liar, an exiting patron very nearly trips over her on his way out! Looking up, the fellow has a gray complexion like her own, but he positively towers over her, at more than twice her own height. The diminutive gnome automatically takes a defensive posture, gauging the being’s reaction before taking any further action of her own.
Looking down, the Goliath sees a gray-complected gnome, half his height, in a fighting stance. She has reddish brown hair, and her hazel eyes dare him to respond with aggression. “Oi?! Watch yer step, longshanks!”
Svfra has a yklwa and a small round shield on her back, but appears ready to defend herself without resorting to weapons. An outside observer could be forgiven for finding the scene comic.
The tavern owner and barkeep is a middle-aged human woman named Danae. She's known for her shiny, raven-black hair. This only sticks out because almost everything else about her is average, including the quality of her ale. That said, she seems intelligent and is more attentive to her customers than most taverns you've been to in the Ten-Towns. She tells you no other strangers besides the four of you have been in the tavern for awhile. Lonelywood is the northernmost of the Ten-Towns and they don't get many visitors.
However, she tells you that there are reports of a massive white moose that has attacked and killed loggers and trappers on sight. The town's best hunters can't seem to catch or kill the beast, and she's sure that the Speaker of Lonelywood (a halfling woman named Nimsy Huddle) would offer a pretty reward for proof of its death. This makes her remember that if you're staying the night in Lonelywood, you'll have to talk to the Speaker anyways, because the only inn in town is closed, and when people need to stay in town, the Speaker has been putting people up in her heated attic. Danae tells you that the "Ramshackle Inn" (it's actual name) closed after its owner (a human male named DeGrootz) hung himself in the common room two years ago, just before this current unending winter began. The rumors are that he was actually killed by some old "friends" of his and the hanging was to cover up the murder, but by all accounts the man was just a sawyer before opening the inn, so it's unclear why he would be murdered. Danae thinks it's just people making up stories.
For Piemin and Vothos
Piemin has found that there is another Goliath working as a scrimshander along the docks of Lonelywood. He introduces himself to Vothos and Piemin as Grakhal Slymaker Lakumukane. The Lakumukane clan (appropriately named "Bonecarvers"), are generally a neutral clan amongst Goliaths, who tend to live on the coastal regions of mountains and are one of the most likely clans to have regular relations with non-Goliaths. He tells Vothos that Torg's had been in Termalaine not too long ago. He had been there about 3 days ago purchasing supplies, so they may have moved on by now.
He also tells Vothos to be careful of the forest Lonelywood takes its name from. There's been a white moose that has taken to killing and terrorizing hunters and trappers. The Speaker of Lonelywood is offering a reward to rid the forest of the beast.
For Haribo
You find a "friend," Tahg, a rotund male gold dwarf who works mostly as a deliveryman with his dogsled team, traveling regularly between Lonelywood, Termalaine, Targos, and Bremen, as needs arise. When you ask about Torg's Caravan, he informs you that they were just in Termalaine a couple days ago, and were headed towards Bremen with some of their wares.
As you start to press further, the spells starts to wear off and he angrily pushes you away, and stalks off.
Vothos looks down at the angry, diminutive figure. He curls his long, spindly fingers into a cup and brings his hand up to his mouth. He mutters an arcane word under his breath and a gust of wind blows all of the snow off the gnome's cloak and winter gear. He chuckles heartily, smiles, and holds the door first for his halfling friend to come through and then gestures for her to proceed into the inn.
As she walks in and before he lets the door close, he shouts out in his booming voice, "Be careful, gray one. The snow here is deep!"
Haribo heads back to the inn in a hurry, knowing the backlash of his magics. He'll set up in a corner and wait for his party to arrive. While he sits he will call upon his latent talents and cast detect thoughts and look for any surface thoughts about it Torgs caravan or anything else useful. If he finds anything he will attempt to probe deeper for one round, casting encode thoughts on the memory.
If not, he'll simply encode what he heard from the Gold Dwarf earlier.
After an hour, the door to the taverns opens. The slender goliath, Vothos, and his halfling friend, Piemin, enter and make their way to the table where Haribo and Svfra sit. Vothos looks at the gnome remembering his encounter with her just a few hours ago.
"I see you've made a friend, Haribo. Well done!"
Vothos reaches his long arm toward the gnome to shake her hand.
"Name is Vothos Draesur of the Mauna Haki. What's your name gray one? Will you be accompanying us?"
Vothos sits down loudly and puts his fur-lined boots up on the table.

Brods eyes widen a bit
I didn't expect a Goliath to be embuded in Magic very curious. I bet there's a good story under there.
Haribo an entertainer? he smiles at that. Well its good to have another "friendly" member in the group.

Relaxing her stance, she enters the tavern. “Careful yerself. Th’ heavier yer step, th’ deeper ye sink.”
The gnome takes in her surroundings, noting the other patrons, and strides up to the bar. “Somethin’ warm t’ drink, if ye please.”
Brod will tip the barmaiden for the information and thank her for the hospitality and drinks. Being very friendly and polite.
"I suppose lonely wood would be a good starting point" I'll say to myself and attempt to find thr party to share whatb I've learned
Noticing Svras thoughts of Hlin, Haribo will Encode the thought of his conversation with the Gold Dwarf 'friend' and then beckon the gnome over.
"You there, I've been expecting you, Hlin has departed but I am with a party under her, mhmp, employment."
”I too seek th’ Trollbane fer employment.” Svfra approaches tentatively, looking up at the human. “What’s th’ job?”
Haribo explains the job as he remembers it (which is rather well) and then says the group is meeting back here after some reconnaissance.
He will also send a telepathic nudge to the bartender {"You should really put the poison out before the rats get too numerous"}
