Errona goes around the celebration drinking with the citizens. When she finds time, she tries to strike up conversation asking about the red lady. She tries to gather any more information she can, but is mostly enjoying the night.
after dancing well past his hearts content, a23 takes a breather to mingle with the locals. he approaches the most rowdy and rugged group among the bunch
”such a pleasant evening to sit by the fire and enjoy the company of strangers.”
"The tale?" Marta replies, looking up at Roc from her bowl of stew. "Ah, yes. The story is well known throughout town. This ring has been passed down to me from my grandparents."
Errona and a23 make their rounds with the locals while enjoying the night. After reconvening, they find that the citizens know little about the cloaked figure outside of the legend. However, the mysterious howling wind is likely related to the wintry curse currently placed upon the Icewind Dale. "Surely, Auril the Frost Maiden was involved in some way. What can we do but attempt to appease the Goddess of Winter?" a miner says, shaking his head in despair.
Errona looks to a23 and says "Unfortunately I am not from the North so my knowledge of this woman is lacking as well. Perhaps Roc would know more. He grew up in the North."
"No." Marta replies to Roc. "The topic became taboo since the incident. My parents said it caused them a lot of trauma...." She sips some stew. "But enough time has passed, and I feel it's my responsibility to make sure the tale is not forgotten. Especially with the endless rime torturing us as it does." Her ring sparkles as it swings from her necklace.
Roc puts his hand to his chin.
The Icewind Dale has always been a cold place, but for the past two years, Auril's curse has plagued the lands. This has made traveling across the Dale increasingly dangerous, and food has generally become much more sparse than before.
The three major towns of Bryn Shander, Easthaven, and Targos have been making human sacrifices to the Frostmaiden, typically decided by a lottery. The unlucky person whose name is drawn is sacrificed at nightfall. The ill-fated soul is stripped bare and either tied to a post or sent into the tundra to die. Accusations of rigged lotteries are common but usually not acted upon. (ooc: The adventurers learned about one such event in chapter 1.)
Smaller towns that can’t afford to give up people give up their food instead. A day’s catch of knucklehead trout is strung up on wooden racks a mile outside town, to be claimed by yeti and other creatures that embody Auril’s wrath.
Towns that can’t bring themselves to give up their people or their food forsake warmth for a night. No fires are lit between dusk and dawn, forcing locals to share body heat for warmth. Anyone who dares to light a fire is savagely beaten.
Termalain's sacrifice is that of warmth. Unfortunately, Roc had no other information about the cloaked figure.
A local miner's eyes turn to dread upon hearing a23's question, his mouth still stuffed with mammoth.
Before he can answer, the crowd's attention is again drawn to the center fire. "Speaker Oarus Masthew has arrived to the festivities! May we have your attention!"
The half-orc speaker stands in front of the fire. "Raz! Jantok! Jat! I have been told that friends have visited us from neighboring towns! Oh, it has been so long since we've had such a feast! Please, let me express my gratitude to you directly."
"Thank you for having us. We are aware of your town's sacrifice of warmth. When would the night be that no fires should be lit? I want to make sure to plan my snuggling ahead of time."

DC 15 Wis saving throw.
As an action, you present your holy symbol and speak a prayer censuring the undead. Each undead that can see or hear you within 30 feet of you must make a WIS saving throw (DC 15). If the creature fails its saving throw, it is turned for 1 minute or until it takes any damage. A turned creature must spend its turns trying to move as far away from you as it can, and it can’t willingly move to a space within 30 feet of you. It also can’t take reactions. For its action, it can use only the Dash action or try to escape from an effect that prevents it from moving. If there’s nowhere to move, the creature can use the Dodge action.

a23 listens intently to the halforc speaker before chiming in with a series of questions.
“the locals seem jumpy. does the frost maiden and her curse keep everyone so sullen”
Speaker Oarus Masthew's eyes turn sharp upon hearing Roc's question. "Well, now that you mention it..."
"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" a scream from the crowd disrupts the festive atmosphere.
Suddenly, a mob of skeletons surround the area.
