Oh, I forgot one thing. We are doing milestone leveling. I don't like keeping track of a bunch of numbers.
Quick Note! If you're talking to the players/DM not in-game, be in parentheses like this. If the player is talking use quotes.
I'm describing what the character is doing
(I'm asking where the monster is)
"I'll fight the monster." said the character
Two half-orcs, the kings' bodyguards, are standing on either side of the King's Throne. Each is wearing iron chainmail and wielding a heavy war-axe. On the throne, a large padded chair of gold and pearls was the king. He was a large man, wearing gold and silver robs and wielding his famous staff, made of platinum topped with, well... a pearl. You should've guessed.
The king spoke in a deep, loud voice. "My apprentices! My defenders, I've been waiting so long for you. Here, take some gold as a gift. He shoved a barrel of gold toward them. I've been dying to see you." He took a sip of some purplish juice. "Well, let's see. A tabaxi, a changeling... Some sort of a, erm, turtle creature..." His expression turned serious, and he stood up. "No time for fun. You know why you're here. There is a strange storm overtaking the village. Goblins are being spotted all over the desert, and I think they're building something." I want you to go out into the desert and see what's in that temple. I'm sorry if it feels like I'm rushing you, but my whole city is on the line here." He took a deep breath to calm himself. "So, I've heard some of you all..."
One of his guards leaned towards him and whispered something. The king smiled. "Ah yes, I'm a little ahead of myself today. I must tell you a few things before you go! Number one, watch out for goblins, and magic users that are your enemy. About a fifth of us wield magic of some sort. Number two, stay out of the Onyx District, it's suspicious. Number four, erm, number three I mean. I'm talking much too fast. Number three, the temple is in the north, you should know that."
The guards looked at each other as the king left. One of them said in a gruff, orcish voice, "Sorry, he talks fast when he is stressed. I've gotta give him some raspberry wine every now and then to slow em down." He raised up his axe. "You best get prepared, he gets restless, you know. Over there on the left is the weaponry, you'll find some rations, weapons, maybe a potion or two..." A dwarf walked up and whispered something, and they both left. The last thing anyone said was, "Well, have to chat with the king, don't get into trouble."
And thus, you are left to the sound of the wind, blowing smokey air outside the castle. The barrel of gold sits before you, free to take from. You can see a door to your right and your left.
Olin, having been taken out of jail under the condition that he'd take this job, says in a calm and collective way, "Oh, my dearest king, please, finish. 'you've heard some of us all' what?" Olin awaits his answer.
The king peeks his head back in. "Oh, I was just saying I know about you all. Especially you. I know you well, and that may not be a good thing." He ducked away again.
The king peeks his head back in. "Oh, I was just saying I know about you all. Especially you. I know you well, and that may not be a good thing." He ducked away again.
Chuckles "You know me, you say? How cute that you think you know me."
(Will use minor illusion to have a small gust of wind blow right behind the king)

"Yes, how... Wait a second, no! I know you because you robbed my kingdom! With those kobolds!" The king looked around. "Well fellows, I have to go real quick, and then I'll be right back. Just be a few minutes." And he left with his guards, once again leaving you along with nothing but a bucket of gold. You can see a door to your left and right, and an exit door behind you. There are painting on the walls.
Olin whispers to himself "Heh, he might know me, but he doesn't 'know' me." Then he looks to the rest of the party, "Well, if I'm going to be on this 'quest' as the 'defenders', I might as well get to know my allies in all of this."
(ooc, I think you, DM, should PM the players so that they know that they've been chosen)
Tokka looks around the room, he had never seen such a spacious room before, it was much larger than even the largest huts his people had in the swamps. He walks over to the barrel of gold and puts a claw in, he lifts it up and lets all the gold fall back out of his claw and into the barrel again. He then looks to the others "Is it normal to be given so much coin to hunt?"
(OOC: Tokka is visually based off of the character Tokka from TMNT, see the image below, he also has two handaxes, one on each hip as well.
You hear light talking from the room on the right, where the king is. You notice a table along the wall, with a village map. There is a barrel of gold on the floor, and the exit is behind you.
(I suggest you enter the room on the left and prepare, maybe plan something.)
Saralyn is dimunitive, thin elf with long black hair that spills out over her shoulders. She wears simple grey hooded robes tied with a scarlet sash, and two tiny, spectral balls of blue fire hover about her. She walks over to the room on the left and starts looking at the maps for any important information, muttering absentmindedly to herself.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Will everyone stop calling him "The Demogorgon"? It's his name, not a title!
(I don't know if Liara was there at the very begining so I took my liberty to improvise)
One of the guards opens the hall dors and a small figure enters.
With ease you see a short person who turns out to be a dwarven female with bright red hair. With confidence she approaches the king and others with rattling of her chainmail. You can see she has a shield on her back and a warhammer of decent size in her hand.
She stops a few feet from the king and with a slight nod she speaks:
"Good king, I am Liara Thunderbane and I have heard of your troubles. Please allow me to join your champions and help them to investigate what troubles your people."
Her voice is calm and gentle. Up close you can see her face is covered with freckles and eyes are deep green and a tabard covering her armor has a symbol of a mace held by a pair of armored gauntlets.
"I am but a cleric, so I am no match to these soldiers..." She says looking at the others "...but I will help in any way I can".
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The tabaxi stands quietly in the back of the room, almost leaning on the wall. He's over 6' tall and long-limbed, like other tabaxi you've seen. He's wearing a loose-fitting beige robe, which you've heard the locals call a thawb. A dust colored scarf of sorts drapes loosely around his neck and shoulders. His face is patterned like that of a cheetah. Below the robe, the toes and claws of his bare feet are visible.
The tabaxi doesn't speak as the king and Olin trade words, but he looks (glares?) back and forth between them. By the time the king leaves with his guards, the tabaxi is shifting his weight back and forth and glancing around at the others. When Tokka goes to handle the gold, the tabaxi responds in a voice that carries, "I would not touch that gold, big spikey turtle." His Common is a bit clipped with a stacatto cadence, and his voice is a bit reedy and higher-pitched than you'd expect from a human or goliath of his height. His tone is a flat, so it's difficult to read. "The more gold humans have, the more jealously they usually guard it."
(Can Rain tell whether the half-orc was lying or hiding something? insight? 12)
He looks to Olin and stares for a moment. "Thief with kobold clansmen, something feels wrong here. Ey?"
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(Since we're only posting infrequently and may be inter-leaved, I'll try to move things along by guessing a little at what others may do.)
(If anyone introduces themselves first, Rain will reply.)
"I am Rain Before Sun's Rising." He places his left hand on his right forearm and then turns his right hand supine for a moment. "Call me Rain. My village is away to the south," he gestures south. "But I have traveled the desert for many moons now." Then he continues to stare, unblinkingly at them for a few moments until someone else talks.
(If Liara introduces herself...)
Rain responds in a formal greeting in passable dwarvish. Then he continues to stare at her, unblinkingly for a few moments or until someone else talks.
(If there is any lull in the activity, or if anyone makes a move to explore this room.)
Rain pads noiselessly across the room toward the door to the right. (Stealth: 15 I don't know whether it's an open arch or whether there's a closed door. If it's a closed door, he stops right in front of the door for a moment but does not put his ear to it. If it's there's no door, or if the door is open, he stops before the door and just leans casually against the wall nearby.) Rain remains still, and (if anyone speaks) just raises a hand up without looking. He listens for a minute. (Can he hear anything from the conversation in the room? Perception: 9.)
(Is the table in this room or in the room to the left? In either case, once introductions are done and after trying to listen at the doorway to the right for a minute, if there's still time...)
Rain gathers his gear and moves to the table. He sets his gear down on the table in a messy pile and pulls the robe off, folds it up, and places it in his backpack. You can now see that he wears loose trousers and has some unadorned leather armor covering his torso, thighs, shins, and arms. He has a sleeveless vest over his torso, not fastened in the front.
He straps two scabbards that hold short, wide swords across his back so that the hilts face upward and outward, just at his shoulders. He then looks at the map with interest and studies it. If no one else is currently looking at it, and it's not too big to hold, he picks it up so that he can look at it without stooping over the table.
(Aside: don't edit a post that has rolls. It seems the values keep changing. Or maybe I can make some edits? Probably better just to post again to correct anything that was wrong in the first post.)
(Weird. I forgot to add the second [ roll ] to my previous post. When I updated it to add the second roll, it changed the value of the first roll and added the warning banner.)
Tokka looks back at the Tabaxi as he lets the last of the coins fall out of his hand and back into the barrel. He grunts, "Why say you give something if you dont mean to give it? Are such lies common for the humans? And what use will these coins even bring us in our hunt?"
Note on speech in the spoiler box.

Hey, could we please wait for the players to introduce themselves?
First, players introduce themselves! Then, we get to the luck event below:
I'm feeling lucky right now. Let's leave this to chance. Roll d6 once, don't edit.
I'll let one of you roll dice 1d6, no rerolling or editing. Let's see what happens.

"I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me..."
The king walks back in, says hello, then goes back into the other room, apparently very busy. Talking gets more intense.
(We will begin an event once everyone is here, although I've had a chat with Rain and I don't know how soon they can start posting. I'll check.)
