Just want to preface with I am very new to D&D, and Table Top Gaming in general. I started playing earlier this year in a campaign with a couple of friends. Fell in love after the first session. I was able to recreate my character up to about 90% (Dragonborn Fighter). I am only unable to use the Battle Master Archetype within the system (I ended up using a combo of my sheet and my phone). We played this weekend so I thought I'd share how it went.
First, I used my phone. The mobile version worked well for me. I didn't run into any bugs or errors. One weapon I carry is a battleaxe. I noticed when I only have it equipped, it still doesn't take into account it being versatile, and upgrading the damage to a 1d10 instead of the 1d8. I don't know if I have to specify in some way that it's being used with one hand or two, but I can't figure out how to do that. (Not a big thing, but it'd be nice to be able to see the true damage roll if I'm wielding it two handed).
I was wondering if, after leveling up, it's possible to have something pop up that helps update your character and easily tells you what you can update. When I jumped from 3 to 4, I only knew I had to update my ability score from the rules book. It would have been nice for something to tell me that within the sheet.
Setting up my character was pretty easy. It took me a little bit to find certain things, but I found it all, and my character was set up how he is on my sheet (minus my archetype). Using it during the game went ok. I only used it about half way through since I still had to use/update my sheet, and it got redundant doing the same thing twice.
Since I'm more of a casual player (about once a month) I'd be willing to use the service if there is a one-time fee (like buying an online book through the service or a code in a physical copy) but I don't game enough to justify a monthly subscription.
Though my experience is limited, I enjoyed using the online character sheet and the ease of building characters.

I would agree with this. I'm also not a super-regular or hard-core RPG-er - we play maybe once every few months as our schedules allow - so subscriptions services are unlikely to be used with my group as the actual cost per game will be fairly high. I love the service, though, and look forward to seeing the finished product, but I would hope there would be some intermediate one-time fee account for the casual players, or, as asked above, discounts for those who have already bought the books.
In general, this is something that I really dislike about how the Internet has changed things. Everything is now subscription-based via the Internet, which only serves to increase profits for the companies. I would much rather pay a higher cost once than a smaller amount every year in perpetuity.

Yes there will be the possiblity to buy with an one-time payment any of the digital book.
I dont suppose it will be possible to add in custom races or anything in the future, wanted to add a goblin character but cant create a new race for it

Creating backgrounds, feats, races, or subclasses. We want to start testing with a smaller subset of content types. We'll add more opportunities for custom content as we move forward.

They're working on it.

One issue I'm running into is it's hard to find Basic non magical armor. If I'm making a character under level 10 why do they need magic armor or weapons? It takes so long just to find basic stuff
Glad to see that the validation when selecting proficiencies has been implemented, however I have a personal issue with how backgrounds have now been implemented.
The core rules for backgrounds would indicate that the skill, tool and language proficiencies are fixed unless they overlap with a proficiency granted by another source, otherwise this rule becomes redundant and also removes a lot of the flavour from the background.
If a character would gain the same proficiency from two different sources, he or she can choose a different proficiency of the same kind (skill or tool) instead.
At the same time, there are the guidelines on customising backgrounds, which basically states that if the available backgrounds don't quite fit your character or a suitable background doesn't exist then make one up. The currently implemented versions of backgrounds is much more like this and it has probably been implemented so because it is easier.
My personal preference would be to have the proficiencies fixed and not feeding into the class proficiency validations if background is chosen first. If proficiencies then overlap the background gets a free pick of the appropriate proficiency. Customising backgrounds should then fall under the homebrew rules.
I feel this follows the rules given in the background section as written. It will also prevent issues when some of the backgrounds presented in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide such as the Faction Agent or Urban Bounty Hunter that already offer some flexibility in skill proficiencies are implemented.
As I wrote at the start, this is a personal preference for how it is implemented that I thought I should share. However, if the current implementation is intended to be kept can the tools list be segmented somehow so that all the proficiencies of a specific type are listed together, i.e. all the artisan's tools listed alphabetically, a break followed by all the gaming sets, a break and then the instruments? Similarly, if the "Customizing a Background" rules are going to be how the builder functions by default, can the tool proficiency lists also include languages since that section treats tool and language proficiencies interchangeably?

Good idea. Hopefully, that already occurred to them.

so I was building a Dragonborn sorcerer. I'm not sure how the system works for this but I was wanting to do a dragonborn who had of course dragon ancestry and I chose blue dragon. But once I went to sorcerer and I chose dragon bloodline it wouldn't let me choose the draconic ancestry or tell me what ancestry I already have. Is it because I have a dragon bloodline already as dragonborn? Also does that automatically make it so that my dragonborn can't take on wild magic instead of dragon bloodline? Granted I don't understand the rulings on this but there is nothing in the PHB that says I can't have two different dragon ancestry lines by taking dragonborn race and draconic bloodline as a sorcerer. Nor does it say I can't choose a dragonborn race and take on the wild magic as a sorcerer either. Again I don't know what the rulings on those are.
Just noticed that the backgrounds are now more customisable. This is awesome however... it's still restricted to only languages or only tools. By default, you can choose any combination of two languages or tools. So in Acolyte, for instance, you don't have to choose two languages. You could choose one language & one tool or two languages or two tools. I'm sure y'all aware of that and it'll come eventually, just being pedantic and pointing it out for reference purposes :)

I'm creating a level 3 Ranger and when I get to adding level 1 spells, the list of available spells is incomplete.
For example: go to the spell list and filter by Range spells, level 1. The list includes Ensnaring Strike and Hail of Thorns. Now Create a Ranger level 2 or higher and try to add some spells, the list is half as long and the two I included above are some of those missing.

During the beta test of D&D Beyond, they'll only be including content that is freely available from Wizards of the Coast, including the D&D 5th edition SRD, D&D 5th edition Basic Rules, Elemental Evil Companion and potentially others. The beta will not include additional content from a Commercially Released Book, Module or Supplement.

How do you link spells to your character?
Race exclusive feats might be bugged, i just created a human paladin with svirfneblin magic, the quick build was used when this happened.
Yeah, they know about that issue and it's on their list of things to fix.

I love the newest phase and have used it for existing, as well as rolling up a few new characters.
Question; why do I need to use the override score for my abilities scores to have the right numbers print? Is this intentional or As-Designed?
I made a character, but couldn't level it up later.
