The dead forest around you remains unchanging as you walk, and the damp leaves crunch beneath your feet as you progress deeper into the darkness. You pass a grove of glowing purple mushrooms, a still black pool, and a single frayed noose hanging from a dead branch.
Cresting a small hillock you gaze over a dark plain, illuminated by a grim mockery of the earthly moon, and the source of the vague purple transcendence which has been lighting your way. Dark shapes, outlined in purple, graze on dead black grass. You cannot make out any identifiable features, but you determine that they are the equivalent of cows in the mortal realm. There are at least a hundred of them.
Yawgou takes a moment to pause at the peak of the hill, looking back at the glowing purple mushrooms, then back to the plains in front of him. He's in complete awe of what he sees. "This...is not the world we are accustomed to."
He continues down the hill and outward onto the plains, walking among the hundreds of strange cows. "So much death...yet some things still cling to life. How curious." He reaches out towards one of the creatures, but stops himself before making contact. He turns to the rest of his companions.
"It would seem we've fallen much further than I previously thought." He places his hand on one of the creatures to see if or how it reacts.

Bear is on constant alert, her eyes looking everywhere at once, and her muscles tense and ready for action. She follows along with the others, her mind barely registering any talk. She only watches for danger.

Yawgou smiles as he pets the animal. "Even in the darkness...light remains."
Keeping his hand on the furry creature, he turns his head toward Bear, then adjusts to try seeing what -- or who -- has Bear's attention. He sees the two individuals in the distance, and decides to call out.
"Hello, friends. My companions and I are...new to this area. Would you be so kind as to provide us with some answers to our questions?"
Yawgou will stay put and keep an eye on the two mysterious "shepherds." Perception: 23
Yawgou's eyes initially squint to better identify the approaching creatures, then widen in fear of what appear to be two looming threats; however, he eventually steels himself, grasps his amulet and casts Shield of Faith on himself.
(Regretting a bit how I canonically made my character a defensive fighter, but assuming the creature I'm next to is facing these two creatures, I'd like to gently pat the backside of this animal with my quarterstaff in an attempt to send the entire herd into a chaotic frenzy.)
"Not as expected." He winces. He's hurt a bit, but not down just yet. He peers around to see if he can see any of his companions (but I imagine the rampaging herd makes it difficult to see anything at all).
He turns back to face the approaching creatures, readying himself to Dodge out of the way once either of them get close enough to attack.

Bear is hit by a deep cow with the force of a charging bull, and she goes down under a ton of sweaty fur and horns. Bear takes 3 bludgeoning damage and is knocked prone.
(I am afraid we may have to continue without Astra.)
The two hunched figures grunt a command to the deep cows they bestride and begin to charge for you, brandishing their staves and slurring in a strange, guttural tongue.

Bear makes a low whistling sound to get the others' attention. She motions with her head and eyes toward the two individuals in the distance.
Animal Handling: 23
(OOC: I'll say Yawgou hears the whistle and is aware of it, but he's a bit too preoccupied with his current action to turn his attention away.)
The animal starts in fright but calms when Yawgou presents himself to be a friend. It is warm and is covered in short, patchy fur.
