This thread, actually is mostly to make sure that I keep myself motivated into making the world I have in mind. I feel I have the world starting to form in my head, but at the same time, I know making a homebrew world (with kingdoms, cities, towns, people, and all the other details i'm missing) is hard. So not only is this thread to help keep myself motivated, but also to gather advice from people willing to give it. This thread will be updated by me everytime I have some new info to give. I'll learn how to make it so that similar topics are linked to each other so people don't have to scroll through all the posts one page at a time. But anyways, feel free to leave advice and questions to this thread. I shall look to answer them or include the answer/take your advice on the next post!

Well without further ado, here is the first tidbit of what the general concept of this world is, and the very beginnings of its origins!
When the world first came to be, ethereals inhabited the world. These ethereals are not what some might have encountered in a plane today. No these were god-like beings who had powerful, destructive weapons that were bound to their mind and soul. However, as with any living organism, once power became involved, there was always a fight; to rule among all. Unfortunately, this fight, this squabble between ethereals ended with them all dying, except for a chosen few. Those few, only because they were so powerful, became spirits, and eventually, the gods and goddesses that we know today. Due to Abyja, one of the most powerful of ethereals, who casted a spell with her dying breath, made it so that the weapons of the ethereals were left behind, and with some, the ethereal itself was bound to these weapons. They were carefully hidden, and in some cases, gifted to the new creations that were made.
A pantheon of gods and goddesses, all close to Abyja, the goddess of creation and beginnings, rose from the battlegrounds, and with their newfound powers, created the world of Eishirene as it is now known today. Fauna, flora, rivers, mountains, oceans, islands, continents, men, women, and all races were created. And the world lived in peace and prosperity, with no disturbances of wars and battles. For a while, the new gods were able to enjoy their creations in peace, keeping the justice and faith with kind words and gentle scoldings. Life on Eishirene was content. That was, until Lenbris awoke from his deep rest.
Lenbris was an ethereal that matched Abyja in power, and was one of the main instigators of the war that happened before Eishirene. He was the one that struck the beginning blows, and he was the one that struck the final blow against Abyja, but was one second too late, as the spell still took hold. But not even Abyja's power could permanently silence Lenbris, and he came to be a god himself. Of course, when he first awoke, he hid his presence, and assessed the situation, He saw Abyja, and her pantheon of gods, and the disgustingly peaceful creations they had made, and decided he must RUIN it. So, he slowly gathered his strength, resurrecting a select few from the group of ethereals he commanded. Then, slowly, when he had gathered enough power, started to corrupt Abyja's creations. Lenbris, with the aid of his own pantheon of gods slowly converted some of the populations living, and gifted them with weapons, and slowly manipulated them into waging war, havoc, and chaos against Abyja's creations.
Abyja, and her pantheon became alarmed when the first of Lenbris' converts attacked. Their peaceful world was now in threat. The first option they looked into was trying to kill Lenbris and his minions. But unfortunately it was too late. They had securely established their godhood, and the only way to beat Lenbris and his cohort entirely, was through their followers. What they wanted to avoid, now has started. Their creations will now fight a war that had lasted for eons. Abyja and her pantheon could not allow their followers to be hopeless and defenseless any longer. To those humans and races they created long ago, they now taught how to construct weapons that can bind to the soul and grant unspeakable power to those that were worthy. The gods even chose a select few the knowledge that weapons owned by ethereals were hidden to this day. Yet even fewer, those selected to be champions were allowed a vision to where one of these weapons were. Those that were brave, passionate, and devoted enough, then went through the ridiculous trials to obtain such a weapon, in service to their god.
Once word was passed on to Lenbris that this had happened, he too instructed his followers of the ethereal ways. However, most of the world now thinks of this as all myth. It had faded through time, starting from reality, and changing slowly, into a story, then to a bedtime story, and now, they are nothing but myth to be told to scare the children into behaving. It was still tradition that at any child's coming of age, a weapon be crafted with their own hands, to match their soul, and to nurture their growth. And some reached the potential, and even unlock, the true, unspeakable, power of their soul weapon.
Only the true followers of the gods know that war is still happening to this day, and silently, they keep it going, battling in hopes that one day, their god would win. They wage the war, in the background, recruiting from the most powerful, from those that unlocked their soul's powers. These are then sent off to collect a weapon of an ethereal, and slowly informed of the battle waging in the background of all life. Eventually, they all pick a side. Which side will you pick? Where will your journey take you?
So, the one part that I haven't decided yet was how the soul weapons and ethereal weapons would work.
The main mechanic behind this was that I was browsing on pinterest, and saw all these really amazing art pieces of various weapons, and thought wouldn't it be cool, if characters had a weapon bound to them that evolved throughout their journey? That's where I got this campaign idea from. As your character levels, so does your weapons. Of course, I thought it would be too overpowered if your weapon leveled every time you leveled. That would make it extremely hard to keep track of all the changes to your weapon and also harder to balance out the mechanics. So that gave me the idea to level up the weapon depending on the significant changes that happen to the character involved. Those changes may be from dedicating 5 years of your life studying a particular martial art, or it could be a life changing decision.
This would help limit how many times the weapon could change, making it from being too OP. Another way to stop it from being too OP, is that everyone in the world that is an adventurer or knows how to fight, has one of these soul weapons. An each weapon is pretty unique to that person, making it so that players had to anticipate when fighting intelligent enemies, that the enemy has a soul weapon too. This also brought up that, if my players are the type to feel out the situation, gathering information about their enemy first, then they should be rewarded. So each soul weapon should have a subtle indicator as to what ability they might have. For example, if a sword soul weapon is very poisonous, maybe it has a sickly green hue to the blade, or have a green emerald in the hilt.
Also, a person can only have 1 soul weapon. A weapon tied to their very soul. Ethereal weapons are a whole new category, but a soul weapon is completely their own. Now there are ways to enslave another person's soul weapon, but that's something I think I want to discuss later on. But I think limiting a person to 1 soul weapon is also a good idea. However, if a rouge is wanting a dagger pair, then the soul weapon can be a pair of daggers. So some sets are allowed, but they only work if they are used at the same time. I also want to add that even though a person dies, if their soul weapon is completely intact, their is a different way of resurrecting the player. Soul weapons are much harder to destroy than regular weapons, but if soul weapons are destroyed, the person has NO chance of coming back to life. Also, if an enemy decides to destroy the soul weapon rather than the person.. well bad things happen. That's why there are things called thralls ya know. I'll flesh out more on how the soul weapons are bound to a person, as well as the hows/effects enslavement and destruction of soul weapons do to a person, along with how a person can be resurrected through their soul weapon in a different post (i.e. when I actually have this fleshed out).
If a person has harnessed an ethereal weapon, then the person has to use either the ethereal weapon or the soul weapon. They can't use both at the same time. So a fighter with dual weapon fighting can't use both the abilities of an ethereal weapon and a soul weapon. They could, use the weapons together, in the sense that the basic attacks will be used (Like the 1d4 damage a regular dagger does), but the unique abilities of each weapon can't be used at the same time. So, if a person has an ethereal weapon and a soul weapon, and want to use both in the same fight, they have to first use the weapon they are attuned with first. Then they have to pass certain checks to be attuned to the other weapon, before using its special abilities.
Those are some of the balancing checks I think are a necessity to begin making this unique, evolving weapon to be fair and balanced. This of course, doesn't include the fact that non-intelligent enemies and monsters will be beefed up in other stats so that players won't defeat non-intelligent enemies so quickly.
Now to decide these unique abilities that the soul weapon gets, is something I haven't decided yet. Should I make it so unique to the situation? This would involve in me carefully feeling out each situation with the player in mind, and then giving the players the option of one or the other. The advantage here is the player is really hands-on to what their weapon will become, and get really interested with how the weapon evolves. However, the disadvantage is that players will try to meta and get certain traits, and to do so, make their character do out-of-character things to achieve them.
Another way to do this would be still be in contact with the player, feel out the situation, but then assigning the player on what happens to their weapon. I get to control how the weapon goes, and so this lowers the risk of a player from meta-ing, but also increases the chance the player will do risky things without heeding the consequences to make the weapon upgrade as much as possible.
My final strategy is a little more RNG. After the weapon evolves, instead of trying to assign it a certain ability, I make a pre-constructed table with some basic situations already mapped out, and roll some dice to decide what traits the weapon receives. This makes it so players can't meta, since they don't know what the dice will give them, and also keeps it fun, since they might get a random power.
I also think that after a weapon gets a certain main trait, such as being poisonous once a day, or gives the owner 1.5x's strength to their attack 2 times a day, that as the weapon evolves, it just upgrades an already their ability. Whether that be allowing the ability to be used more times, or making it more powerful. This prevents having a weapon have an uber-long list of things it can do. So players can keep track of 2 or 3 abilities, rather than 6 or 7.
The above of course, are just talking about the soul weapons. Ethereal weapons on the other hand will be a bit more different. Yes, a player can still unlock further powers of an ethereal weapon. But first, they have to be able to wield it, and be compatible. The more compatible you are, the more abilities you can unlock. For example, if the player was a chaotic good character, but acquired an ethereal weapon aligned as lawful good, then they could only unlock the "good" aspect of the ethereal weapon, not the "lawful" aspect, since they are chaotic, and the weapon is lawful. A player won't be able to wield an ethereal weapon that is completely opposite of their alignment. For example, if the rogue is chaotic evil, and acquired a lawful good weapon, they are unable to wield the ethereal weapon. Some very powerful weapons even have specific morals and personalities. If throughout their journey the ethereal weapon and the wielder butts heads too many times, the weapon will not work. Such is the whims of a very powerful weapon that has the potential of having the mind and soul of an actual Ethereal bound to its confines.
The abilities will be set per specific ethereal weapon, because there aren't that many ethereal weapons in the world (I mean there is quite a few, but very hard to find),. Also, these weapons also have a set way to unlock the next level of powers, so to speak. For example, one of the goddesses I have mentioned is Abyja, the goddess of creation and the beginning. If someone ever acquired the staff that she wielded, then they would have to perform a certain act of peace and creation for the next ability to unlock. So, unlike a soul weapon, where it evolves with the character, ethereal weapons are unlocked through a specific feat. These feats will also have to be discovered by the player, whether it be knowledge checks, communicating with the ethereal weapon, or for some, sheer, dumb luck. And finally, for an ethereal weapon there are only 2 upgrades. You automatically unlock the first if you successfully bind with the weapon upon acquire. Then, the weapon evolves once per feat that you accomplish.
A player can have only ONE soul weapon, but multiple ethereal weapons... if, IF they could handle the power... there are consequences to having multiple ethereal weapons.. as well as there are consequences if someone manages to enslave a soul weapon.
This is what I had in mind for the unique part of my campaign. However I know that it isn't quite fine tuned yet. If you have any advice to perhaps balance this mechanic, or unique ideas of weapons that you think would be cool, or any advice on it really, I would love to hear it. What do you think is the best method to decide how a soul weapon evolves? Do you think the basics of the ethereal weapons is a good headway? Leave your thoughts if you'd like!

This went on for ages, and slowly, Abyja lost hope for companions to join her in this vast emptiness. But suddenly, a companion joined her. And slowly, little by little, more Ethereals came to be, and joined Abyja. Abyja was joyous and went to greet them all. Some greeted her with warmth, others excitement, most with cautious friendliness. But a few… few were gruff, aggressive, and hostile. As time passed by, with more of these beings joining, Abyja realized there would be conflict, and began to prepare to the best of her ability for such a cause. During this time, she became very close to Lambris, an ethereal who seemed to have similar interests. She didn’t expect him to betray her, and start the war between the ethereals. Forever she will remember the dagger that stabbed her heart, and the look of malice on his face as he shoved it deep into her. Of course, she got the last laugh. The ethereals were decimated, and she was able to cling on, and started to create the world of Eishirene as we know it today. Not much else has been recovered from this lore.. but some seek to finish this tale.

It's been awhile.. but I thought to post a sneak peek/first glimpses on the first goddess I've been working on. It's not much, but it's a beginning I can build on!

Role: the main goddess of the "good" pantheon; god of creation

Hair Style: Long, to mid back, but in loose curls. Bangs usually cover one eye

Identifying Marks: Facial tattoo of gold rhinestones on her forehead. Gold birthmark dripping down making an eyemask

Motivations: To promote peace and prosperity for all; eliminate Lanbris and his cohort of evil ethereals
Flaws: She detests anything that breaks the peace, Very vengeful when wronged
Prejudices: She hates chaos, breakers of peace, and any evil acts - murder, ****, torture
Talents: Abyja is a creator and a peacemaker. She creates and begins a lot of the thinking processes in inventors
Hobbies: Abyja likes to create, and help fuel those that loves to create

Background:
Abyja came to be in the beginning of the Ethereals’ existence. She was the first to be in existence, with her staff, Ataraxia beside her. Hopeful to meet others, Abyja wandered the space, looking for companions, but she found none. Lonely, she filled the time with meditation, katas, and fiddling with her magic. This went on for ages, and slowly, Abyja lost hope for companions to join her in this vast emptiness. But suddenly, a companion joined her. And slowly, little by little, more Ethereals came to be, and joined Abyja. Abyja was joyous and went to greet them all. Some greeted her with warmth, others excitement, most with cautious friendliness. But a few… few were gruff, aggressive, and hostile. As time passed by, with more of these beings joining, Abyja realized there would be conflict, and began to prepare to the best of her ability for such a cause. During this time, she became very close to Lambris, an ethereal who seemed to have similar interests. She didn’t expect him to betray her, and start the war between the ethereals. Forever she will remember the dagger that stabbed her heart, and the look of malice on his face as he shoved it deep into her. Of course, she got the last laugh. The ethereals were decimated, and she was able to cling on, and started to create the world of Eishirene as we know it today. Not much else has been recovered from this lore.. but some seek to finish this tale.
